Title: The Loathed Strangers Podcast
Post by: Costanza on Monday, August 27, 2018, 12:16:08
[This is something that I've been on my mind since Samdy mentioned the other week]

I'm at a stage where I am lucky enough to have an ever growing queue of guests who have agreed to talk to me on the podcast.

I do continue to worry about the sound quality though (any one who has contacted me over the last month will know this). I was really disappointed in myself for the Si Ferry episode as it didn't come out anywhere near to the standard that I wanted it to. Ho hum.

Things don't have to change, I'm really enjoying it and I'll keep going for as long as I enjoy it.

This poll is to get an idea whether listeners would support a small Kickstarter. And when I say small, if 200 people contributed £1 then that would get me the equipment to sort out the sound.

This feels like I'm chancing far too early but the Ferry and Heywood episodes have increased peoples willingness to participate.

Opinions/advice welcomed!

Cheers,

Rich

Thanks, Quagmire!

There's a good range coming up:

- A legend to many
- The very popular
- The fringe
- The handful of appearances
- Ex-staff
- Media

I'm going to have different format for most guests who aren't players - it'll be based around favourite XI's.

Ex-players in the queue are from 80's, 90's, 00's and 10's which is good. I've been really trying to secure players from further back.

The Heywood and Ferry episodes have opened a few doors. I know there are ex-players who are listening ---- WHICH IS NUTS!

Any chance of getting Kenny Stroud and/or Andy Rowland? Both still living in Swindon area I believe.....

No apologies required. The player episodes are good in the sense that theyíre not time sensitive.

I wouldnít bother with the season based episodes though!

 :(

Apologies.

RE: raising funds. I still donít know how Iím going to do it. Iíve been busy with life stuff so I was pleasantly surprised I managed to organise something this week let alone set-up a Patreon or something like that.

Iíll have to get on it because Iíve found myself beginning to hold back from talking to some very willing and popular ex-players because *I* donít want to mess it up. That sounds harsh on those who have participated, itís not supposed to, all the people Iíve talked to have been, frankly, amazing.

I've not found it that bad before this one today, but it sounds like the guest is on a yoyo over the mike.

However, that shouldn't stop you from continuing, I'm still enjoying it!

Iím not stoping, far from it :)

Itís funny as Ben is the only guest who records sound from his end and itís created more issues for the reasons you give.

Work is progress. Iím still looking at avenues which means nobody is paying me. I might have found one.

Its a reference to the Nick Hornby book - Fever Pitch and the 1969 cup final when he became aware of the Swindon fans.

Ah, right thank you. I have read Fever Pitch - brilliant book - it was a long time ago though so had forgotten that little passage. Good work with the podcast anyway...

...I love the bit where he says something along the lines of..."I've examined the contract, scoured the small print and there are no loop holes, no way out"... I know I've hopelessly mis-quoted but it really does encapsulate what being a Town fan (or indeed any club) means...

As always a really good listen. Most fascinating part for me was Sam hinting about Sherwood's involvement leading up to the final vs Preston. He touched on it and would love to hear more on this. I knew Cooper and Williams relationship wasn't great at this point.

Weren't they the same people who insisted he couldn't be an asset stripper as we didn't have any assets to strip? Shortly before he forward sold the catering for the next decade. TBF, I'm not suggesting he wasn't incompetent, but it's not mutually exclusive. He was just as incompetent at being a shyster as he was at everything else

Just listened to Morshead, really good episode (for sound quality & content). Interested to hear him be almost, almost complementary about Jed.

But yes, Morshead II needs to include the Troy Archibald-Henville beef(burger).

Journalist in liking simple publicity seeker who provides copy on a plate whilst disliking person who doesn't spoon feed stories shocker....  ;)

I sort of feel for the next guest as Sam was always going to be a big number on the listener front and it is a tough follow-up... but he's got a really interesting background away from football (I think anyway) and certainly won't go down as a cheerleader for Swindon Town Football Club. We spend most of the Swindon talk discussing the managers he served under.

The dudline day segment was brilliant with Sam. I felt like the Mark Cooper/Luke Williams era was covered quite quickly though, so would like to hear more on that period of time.

The Jamie Pitman one was also very good, I totally forgot about him being sat in the dug out during the Ward/Miller games.

Didnít have time to cover Ling and Williams.... or his stint at Total. Lots to cover in the second sitting (including Cooper).

Jamie Pitman took part with 24 hours notice so will always be a titan of industry in my mind. It was a bit of a mad scramble to prep though.

Hoping to get a few pre-90ís on board.

I'm obviously in the minority because I thought he still came across as a bitter, jilted ex (especially with regards to Power), who doesn't like it when he gets a bit of criticism, (the whining little cunt... ;)).

Really enjoyed that Rich, McAreavy was really interesting. Clearly it wasnít one of our more memorable periods and it sounds like the problems at the club really affected his career. And a really bad way his Town career ended to boot.

Interesting that Matt Heywood liked Kingy but McAreavy didnít. Just shows as a football manager how tough it is to get a large group of individuals to mound as a team.

Keep up the good work Rich. Is that your daughter right at the end of the Podcasts?

Enjoyed the McAreavey episode, and the best sound quality of any episode yet for me, felt pretty professional.

Really interesting picture of King from Heywood, Evans and Paul collectively, clearly had different impressions of the bloke but actually they agreed on most things, just that some of them came off better from him!

Yes I really enjoyed McAreavey, just goes to highlight what a shambles that period was and what i thought at the time that King got things done in 2003 / 2004 more by luck that judgement.

Or how vital man management is. Thereís a reason Eddie Howe is doing so well - his players tend to love him. I think Taylor could have the same effect, whereas I can imagine (on no more than a hunch) that Brown could be divisive. The podcasts really give a sense of what drives a player - something we often overlook as fans.

That would be great! Just had a quick look at his Wiki page, and this line made me chuckle:

Quote
Several English clubs were rumoured to be interested in Miglioranzi after the announcement that he would leave Swindon - clubs included the Town's bitter rival Oxford United. However, Miglioranzi rejected the chance to talk to the Non-League outfit.

I had a dream about this in what pathetic amount of sleep I got last night.

It was in the format of a panel show with Costanza as the host. I was captain of one team and Ty Gooden was on my team. Shaun Taylor was on the other team but I don't remember who their captain was. It was all done in the style of Monty Python film prequels, though (the cutouts).

Then the show came to an end because the studio got flooded by a tsunami (quite standard for my dreams)

Just listened to the Super Sammy one. He is a really nice bloke isn't he? It was refreshing to hear someone with a genuine love for STFC.

I felt a bit sad for him at times because he obviously had some personal regrets and problems throughout his career and, surprisingly to me, he lacked confidence in his own ability which never really showed when he played for Town. He was obviously disappointed that he never really achieved the success that was probably expected after his glorious spell at Swindon.

I remember watching him play against us at Orient when he was on loan there towards the end of his career in England and it was quite depressing to see him huffing and puffing around the pitch. Much like when Steve White scored against us for Hereford, I would have been quite happy for him to score against us because I loved the guy. One of the true Swindon greats.

I don't think I'm a million miles away from securing Hazard. We got as far as trying to get through but there were some technical issues and he's had some personal stuff recently.

I'll get in touch with Micky again soon.

I'm always quite reluctant to talk to people still associated with the club. Although the club have been quite good behind-the-scenes with a couple of bits and pieces.

enjoyed Joe Butler.  football has changed massively since those days.  a poor crowd was 12,000.  facilities and pitches are incomparably better.  Clubs and NOT players decided if never mind when a player was transferred.  Only 14-16 players turning out over a whole season.  No loans in and out and being frustrated having to wait a few months for the January transfer window. Interesting how Joe talks about manager Williams wheeling and dealing until he got the right blend.

In terms of winning games, what came out was how that, once refined, that tiny squad came to feel they could "rely on" every other team mate to perform their "role" and how this gave them the belief as a group to believe they could beat anyone.

The value of Joe's unflashy, steely "holding" role came to be recognised by the fans with a player of the year award.  However, I was slightly surprised by his lack of acknowledgement of the Don's role.  He only acknowledged that having some "exceptional talents" meant you always had a chance of beating a bigger team but didn't name the Don in that context.  Only to say he was best off keeping out the way for defensive duties.  The Don's lurking was often deadly but do you think Joe resented it?  A no nonsense team mate, the equally tough Frank Burrows, is on record as saying he was always happy with the Don not tracking back etc because of all the win bonuses the Don earned for Frank.

Your podcasts are a great contribution to the club's history.  They are becoming a really significant contribution to the unmatched swindon-town-fc.co.uk site.  A picture (video) may be worth a thousand words but those words that you elicit reach places beyond mere pictures.  Your relaxed interviewing style is underpinned by praiseworthy research and gets the best out of your subjects. Excuse this saccharin praise but it's deserved and obviously appreciated widely by posters here.

Hey Rich, just a thought and could be a way of tapping into a few more ex players etc. With the STFC FPA launched this week, you might be able to network and get yourself a pass to the inaugural dinner? If it were me, I'd certainly be contacting the club and making them aware of what you're trying to achieve. No harm in asking :)

Fantastic work yet again Rich - thank you for this podcast, it is the one joy to come out of this monotonous season.

Was a fantastic escape back to the period (Fitton/Black era) where I last felt 'Swindon crazy', desperately scrambling to read the advertiser online first thing in the morning, the running of the club felt astute and professional, and the feeling that something special round the corner may just be happening.

Listened to these all together recently whilst doing a decorating job.
Really entertaining and professionally produced - well done, keep up the good work !
My period as a true fan only really went from the late 60s to the early 90s, due to geographical separation but it was  interesting to hear that 'the Swindon Way' plagued us throughout  ::)

This is where I start to feel uneasy about listening to these. Fraser was my childhood idol. I was young enough when that idolisation began that I kept mispronouncing his name (Frigby Daser - true story... as Ardiles would confirm). I even played in goal for years simply so I could pretend to be him. But you never want to really know what theyíre like, when they become fallible. Iíve had meals at his pub praying that he doesnít turn up and become a real person, instead of the slick haired, 1991, Green GWR-Spall-shirted legend that he is (was).

Whilst Iím at it, if anyone has that shirt, Iíll pay good price.

Fraser was good, tired after a long day at the restaurant, and perhaps a little more restrained.

Still loves the club, that's all that matters!

How about one with Jimmy Quinn he would probably have a good story to tell about his time as manager and player, or even the likes of Malcolm Crosby it must have a few interesting story's after being assistant to Andy King with the way he managed, and having been at a few others clubs maybe a way of expanding the podcasts and getting new listeners

I said it on Twitter, but I feel like Byrne talks himself up a bit tooooooo much. I mean, the youngsters he brought through we all know about but he also claimed responsibility for...

- Sturrock getting the job at Plymouth
- Wilson getting the job here
- Austin, Cox, Ritchie as well as a few others signing for us.

Also the way he spoke about his playing career he was always the best in the team, or the league. Same for when he was a coach really, even in the dressing room "The lads loved my banter" etc etc

He's either the biggest footballing genius the lower leagues has seen or he's a bit of a bullshitter.

(BUT - great listening anyway Rich. These podcasts are superb)

Listened to the Byrne one last night... blimey, that was quite the ride. Best one yet for someone just coming on and giving you a total insight into everything, it didn't feel like he was holding back on anything (in fact, clearly you'd had to censor some of the Malpas/Diamandis bits for sensible if disappointing reasons).

I'm not really sure how I felt about him afterwards to be honest. I found myself alternating between thinking he was a huge bullshitter, a good guy if a bit full of himself and even felt a bit sorry for him towards the end when he was talking about not being able to get a job now (although I laughed that he said it was about "who you know" having spent the previous half an hour talking about getting mates of his jobs).

Really interesting stuff. One day, you'll be able to use the bits on your cutting room floor as decent rewards for Patreons, although may have to wait until after a few people are dead and can't be libelled!

Itís tough as King was so divisive but canít defend himself (although those who got on with him have).

Kingy outside of needing to stay within the restrictions of Ďmedia trainingí would have been great.

I d0on't know if everybody would agree, but I'd say time has been rather kind to Kingy's reign, even the lows. I feel slightly vindicated for me and my mate's "Why Sack King?" spray job back in the day (probably safe to own up to that now? soapy tit wank) . Sacking a manager who just kept us up seemed wrong at the time.  I was even a little chuffed when he was re-appointed, even if it was a sign of how shit things were behind the scenes.

Not sure I've mentioned it before Rich, one of the things I enjoy is that your watching Swindon pattern seems to mirror my own a bit, especially the 2000's. I think we were at university around the same time, so watching certain games in pubs with people who weren't Swindon fans etc.

Weirdly those first years away from Swindon I probably knew more about the players and their histories and the gossip going on behind the scenes than I ever did when I was a regular 16-18 year old season ticket holder, I think you make up for being away by following as much news and info as you can get. I guess it's around that time that I started posting on here / thisis.

Fantastic stuff.

I think time has been a bit harsh on Kingy.

The lows under Kingy were bloody low, Cheltenham away will stick in my memory forever. The highs were bloody great though, personally I really liked the fella. Best eye for talent we have in my lifetime, if he had the same level of tactical nouse he would have had a superb managerial career.

There is a back drop to it. I had a fucking awful morning as i had come off a motorbike across the magic roundabout and faced death in the face.

I got to work and Dave had said something about fans getting on players back and they need to stop acting moronic. I posted something on the forum like tell that lairy cockney cunt to do one(i was in a mood) That afternoon i got the call to say he wanted me to say it to his face. We met that night in a pub and i walked in and fair play he was sat there waiting at the bar. To break the ice i told him i was looking for a lairy cockney cunt

I have no shame in saying he is one of the most down to earth and honest men i have ever met. Absolutely loves this club and even over the last few years when he has worked at other clubs he would have dropped those jobs to return here in an instant.

Every week he will want to know how we are playing were any of the youth involved etc

The Budgie podcast is the best one so far, good work..

There maybe a bit of bullshit in there (i think he just got a bit carried away in the moment of enjoying the memories) but at least he sounded brutally honest, and the industrial language just made the behind the scenes stuff more real because I believe that was (roughly) how it was.

I would have him back as backroom staff in a breath, a club like Swindon needs characters like that and he certainly wouldn't take any bullshit, and might just unearth the odd gem.

Me too, he seemed to love it at Swindon and he did unearth a few crackers, I remember me and HerthaB speaking to him at the pre season game at Salisbury when he told us he had unearthed a real gem of a youngster who would be worth a "million quid in a couple of years" (his words) turned out the youngster was a certain Nile Ranger as a 17 year old. He had just finished a long shift at the restaurant (which probably attributes to his forgetfulness early on) but still found time to talk to me.

I mentioned childhood struggles with his name as I called him ĎFrasser Digbyí as a kid but it got lost amongst the technical issues that resulted in the initial first 10 minutes being lost.

Or just use a podcast App (Podcast Addict, Stritcher etc)? Not sure why you'd use SoundCloud to listen to podcasts rather than a dedicated podcast app, is there any benefit to that? (Genuine question)

The most interesting bit was about Jeremy Wray at the end, 12 months ago he might have been interested in coming back in (he has backers), irrelevant I know if LP is not interested in selling.

What are the chances of getting an episode with Jeremy Rich?  I am sure you have been trying and I know it's not likely..   I guess if you managed to get him he would have to be very guarded on what he says, so might make it pointless.

Would be interesting though nonetheless..

Wray had the easiest job ever when it came to keeping the fans happy. All he has to do was to say yes... to spending somebody else's money.

I heard the rumours about Wray and Fitton with him last yeat but nothing came from it. I presumed they were the Trusts mystery backer at the time, this is probably not the case though.

Fitton would also be good shout, he seemed to like it at Swindon.

To be fair to Wray, you'd hope he's learned from the experience:
a) Ensure you have clear communication with your funders/investors
b) Don't employ a loose cannon you can't say no to

Or just use a podcast App (Podcast Addict, Stritcher etc)? Not sure why you'd use SoundCloud to listen to podcasts rather than a dedicated podcast app, is there any benefit to that? (Genuine question)

I was just going on the basis that Rich has his podcasts on SoundCloud. If you've got a SC account then it's no biggy to just open up the app and play from there. I don't think there is any benefit to it or vice versa. They both enable us to listen, which is the main aim :)

Wrayís time as Chairman may have coincided with spending Andrew Blackís money, but his best skills, from a fanís perspective, were the ones that came for free - his professionalism and his way of engaging with his customers. Thereís no reason that Power shouldnít do that, he just canít be arsed, and/or hasnít got it in him.

Admittedly Powers citizenship means it's difficult for him to be present. However, when here on matchdays he should be more "available" so to speak. If not, give the job to Clem or at least get in someone in to be the face of your club. They can pay me the meagre sum of £30k pa and all the Hobnobs I can eat. Trouble is I think some would enjoy giving me a slap.

Precisely. Wray was Chairman, not owner. He had a great Chief Exec too, who actually had a public facing role, in Nick Watkins. It was professional and we didnít feel like a basket case. In the 2 or 3 years he must have been here now, Iíve never heard Steve Anderson (effectively the new Nick Watkins) speak and wouldnít know him if I walked past him in the street. Heís virtually absent, or simply a form filler at the club. Power now does the job that was previously performed by Black (owner), Wray (chair) and Watkins (chief exec, in that nobody sees or hears of Anderson). That may be because Power doesnít give him the ability to get in front of fans. But if you listen to Chris Tannerís interview, and Sam Mís, they both emphasise the importance of positively engaging with the fans. Wray and Watkins were masters at it - and it cost nothing, really, to do that. Power and Anderson do less than the bare minimum, which only adds to the air of suspicion and pessimism that surrounds them. That attitude, of course, isnít helped by the fact theyíve put together a shite team, but theyíd make life a hell of a lot better as a Town fan if they simply gave the club the basic care and attention that it deserves, instead of simply waiting for the next property deal and watching the interest on director loans stack up.

Largely agree there FD. I used to frequent the Sponsors Suite when Nick was around and he'd always have time for a chat. What struck me was that even though it was only about 2hrs, he seemed to get round to everyone and most seemed happy with the time spent. I wouldn't know now, but does/has LP enter(ed) the Sponsors Suite/Robins Suite (or whatever they may call it now) on occasion?

At least Power doesn't try to engage with the fan base with bullshit... we know what we'll get.

I was watching Ipswich v WBA earlier, and Ipswich are in trouble... they sacked Hurst and brought in Lambert. One of his first acts was to invite in fans for a chat about how they might improve the atmosphere... the answer seemed to be clackers.

However they got 20,000 for the game..... Ipswich is a bit smaller than Swindon, but they're losing support, last season they only averaged 16,000.

At least there's no pretence with Power, this is it.... no clackers, but probably non league football.... a difficult choice, what say you TEF?

Easy. Non league football would be preferable to being confronted by a fucking clacker on the seat.
They look too unwieldy to be converted into paper aeroplanes, but could be used to bombard an opposition corner taker or an over exuberant goal celebration that gets a bit too close to the stands.

I've gone to the club requesting current staff so I don't think 'too recent' is much of an issue to me. It's just that the most willing and easiest to contact seem to be the King era players.

If I get contact details, I'd approach Ward. I don't like requesting in full view because it seems to put extra pressure on them and/or they tend to ignore the message!

Persuading the owner to get involved in a Lee Power unplugged type environment would be the ultimate I guess.  :)

In mitigation I am a bit drunk and did think long and hard before pressing the post button. :)

Finally getting into these. Simon Ferry part 1 at the moment.

All those sound clips give me goosebumps and nothing has made me miss football more!!

As a side note,  the Wembley white kit fiasco was the sponsors. All 3 kits had different sponsors. Players believed the blue third kit to be Ďluckyí so thatís why we wore it at Charlton. Then the m
sponsors on the white kit kicked up that their sponsor hadnít appeared on TV.

Obvious solution would have been a limited addition red kit with the white kit sponsors but hey ho.

Great listen. He sounds like a decent fella that was really harshly treated by King (I get there are 2 sides to every story so difficult just to take what he says at face value).

That's now Mcareavy (sp) and Cobian that have spoken negatively about King, whereas I have also heard many positives about him. Marmite manager I guess.

I loved his measured response to the question you posed that he had lived in cities such as Buenos Aires, Sheffield and Aberdeen and what was it like when you moved to Swindon. 'ummmmm....'

:)

Cheers, Bob's!

Off-mic, a few of his teammates have said that Juan was professional throughout.

Prime years of his career seemingly wasted but he was settled in Swindon and just had a baby... perhaps he didn't want to roll the dice?

I was just getting to the nitty-gritty when the conversation had to end which was a shame.

Loved several of these, the Moreshead one, Chris Tanner (he did not sound at all like I expected him to), David Byrne, and Super Sammy Parkin of course. I know there were sound difficulties for the Simon Ferry one but you could have recorded it in Abbey Road and I still wouldn't have had a clue what he was saying.

Matt Heywood is returning for the Christmas episode.

Si Ferry could/should be on again before the year is out for a Q&A (I've asked him to return because the sound was so bad). Need to message him.

Sam Morshead has agreed to do another episode too (that will probably be a Q&A too).

loosely related, it seems that Power has been reluctant to involve "STFC-focussed" outsiders such as the Trust and also the Eady estate.  I'd be interested to hear anything Sam picked about any attempts of those two to get involved with Power.

He certainly is, I heard that he is in an old peoples home in the Newmarket area.

In 1978, as a young teenager, I attended an open day at the CG but was feeling unwell and fainted during the ground tour, Danny Williams and Kevin Morris both took me into the medical room and led me on the physio table and Williams gave me polo mints while singing "rolling, rolling, rolling, keep them doggies rolling...rawhide" all the time I was in there, John Trollope was also there with us.
