Title: Papa John’s Tournament???
Post by: Godd002 on Saturday, October 9, 2021, 20:49:36
So from what I have gathered, Tuesday’s game is part of a publicity tournament for papa John’s.  So often sides play back ups to avoid injury.   I can understand that BUT with the momentum STFC has right now wouldn’t it be good to play the team to continue their growth and communication?   And besides I have heard u win like $10,000 if u win a game.  That is party money for team morale!!!!!

Everyone is in bed!

Think that Garner will play those who came in today in order to see if they can repeat today. I suspect several of the subs will come in - East, Dabre, Baudry and Parsons

WTF???  Did I say something wrong?

The football fan of England would rather spit on your grave than consider this an actual game.  It's not you, it's me, so she said.

I never knew Jordan Garrick had joined Plymouth.
He turned down a loan to us in preference to Plymouth in August, their fans are not overly keen on him yet hes made little or no impact when he has played or come off the bench. Until yesterday when playing RWB he was MoM apparently.

As for the game, I don't care about the result but Garner obviously does (he has said so in the past) and its a chance to see how our fringe players and youngsters perform and its included in the iFollow season pass so I will be watching.

They played an almost entire youth/reserve side last game and lost at Newport 2-0 so they dont care it seems.

I never realised they are top of L1 after yesterdays win too.

i will admit i had consumed a bit of gin when i posted this and forgot the time difference ......
i guess i still need to learn the difference between types of games, to me a match is a match...why wouldn't coming out
and beating the piss out of a L1 top team prove somethings?

Because the competition is gateway to league football for Premier League Reserve & B teams. It's an absolute farce and boycotted by the majority of lower league fans, with the exception of a few who seem to like to take 40k to Wembley to justify it all - I'm looking at you Portsmouth  :smugfu:

Because the L1 top team will be made up of reserve players. The other top teams field academy sides. Its like watching the Huskers practice squad play against SMU (first team I could think of) practice squad - Now if it was against the Aggies, things may have been different! (Go gig 'em!   :spoton:  :toocool:)

I’m looking forward to seeing those players who are on the fringes. Can Dabre repeat his good performance against Arsenal. Aguiar and East, Harry Parsons, Baudry and Lyden coming back from long term injuries. Is Mitchell Lawson a viable alternative if/when Simpson is out.

Important game, I reckon. Not too bothered about the result but am about the performance of individuals.

Our first choice 15/16 are fine, but I can’t see those will get through the whole season without injury/suspensions.

Game time, even in this competition, is vital.

+1

Its still a first team fixture against (mostly) 1st team players, its good money for the club if we win, the same amount as we got from Sky for a fucking live TV game!

Its a chance to run the eye over the fringe players as we have no competitive reserve league any more.

Also winnings breeds confidence.

I got an email yesterday offering me a discount on 2 large Papa John’s pizza for just under a tenner - proper price nearly £33.

Wtf!

2 Large Pizzas At Papa John's For £9.99 (norm £32.98)

Papa Johns Pizza DealIf you wanted a takeaway, this is a very good deal to get you 2 large pizzas.

This is quite an unusual deal, in the sense that you have to buy it through Wowcher.

There are only 49 locations involved in the deal, so make sure you check your local is available before buying.

Once you've bought the deal, you can enter a code on the Papa Johns website when ordering.

Find out more information, and to get the deal, head over to Wowcher.

The Catch: Only valid at 49 stores

Expiry: While Stocks Last

Used to go all the time to these games and with Plymouth just over the border from where my brother lives, i would of gone to this one, probably with the nephew.

Premiership B Teams was the thin end of the wedge for me and i havent been since.

Wont go even if its the final, happy to watch that on TV in the pub.

If the premiership want competitive B Team fixtures, bring back the combination league, they have the money to do it.

Anyway, no injuries tonight please.

For those that are interested about team selections.

Player rules for the game - Swindon must start with at least four outfield first teamers.

A first-team player is defined as someone who starts either of the matches directly before or after the EFL Trophy fixture v Plymouth, a player that has started 40 or more senior matches during their entire career or a player who has started at least the 10th-most matches for the club that season.

Any EFL club that fails to meet this requirement is fined up to £5,000.

So that means Lyden, Baudrey, Iandolo and Ward would cover that rule.

the Muff preview FWIW.

Quote
Argyle take on Swindon Town in the second of their Papa John’s Trophy fixtures on Tuesday night.

The Greens lost their opening game of the competition, away to Newport County AFC, but haven’t tasted defeat since.

A number of youngsters were handed game time in the loss, with five players given their debuts by Ryan Lowe.

One of those was 15-year-old Freddie Issaka, who became Argyle’s youngest ever player when he came on as a second half substitute.

Since that game, Argyle have won four and drawn three in Sky Bet League One and currently sit top of the table.

As for Swindon, they won their opening game of the tournament, beating Arsenal under-21s 2-1 at the County Ground.

Since being relegated to Sky Bet League Two last season, they have been in decent form and lie third in the division.

They have won their last two matches, including a 2-0 triumph over neighbours and leaders Forest Green Rovers on Saturday.

Harry McKirdy and Tyreece Simpson scored for the Robins, who are currently on a four-match unbeaten run.

The form the Wiltshire side are on means that Tuesday night’s will a tough one for the Pilgrims and Ryan Lowe knows his side will have to be at their best.

He said, “They’re a good team, they beat Forest Green on the weekend, and we will have to respect them.

“They were a good team in our league last season and got relegated for whatever reason but for us we have to make sure we put a plan together for them.

“We are expecting a really tough game and it’s one that we want to win.”

Argyle have played Swindon four times previously in the EFL Trophy, most recently in October 2019 when Zak Rudden, Joel Grant and Joe Riley gave the Greens a 3-0 win.

Lowe’s side also did the double over Swindon in the league last season, beating them 4-2 at Home Park and 2-0 at the County Ground.

TEAM NEWS

Ryan Lowe is expected to make changes for the game, which kicks off at 7pm. Luke Jephcott and Brendan Galloway are still away with their international teams, while Niall Ennis and James Bolton are out injured.

Danny Mayor came on as a substitute in the win over Burton Albion on Saturday and is expected to play a part while Callum Burton is likely to come in for Mike Cooper in goal.

Swindon also have players away on international duty. Anthony Grant is with the Jamaican squad playing World Cup qualifiers, while Jojo Wollacott is away with Ghana.

Jonny Williams is in action for Wales and Kaine Kesler-Hayden is with the England under-20 squad.

I assume outfield doesn't include goalkeepers so Ward wouldn't be included JJ?

Went to the game at their place in 2014.
Took a wrong turn and ended up sat with the home fans.

Recall that Jack Stephens missed a sitter at the end to complete a comeback from 3 down at half time.
Gladwin scored that night as well.
The lesser spotted Jack Barthram started at RWB, hooked after 55 mins.

The only one I am unfamiliar with is Winchcombe, the rest have been on the bench or played in friendlies for us before.
Callum Winchcombe is a left footed attacker aged just 17 who has a thunderous left foot on him apparently who we signed from Pro-Cision football academy.

Pretty routine equaliser getting in front of - yes - Baudry.
Yes Baudry is a little behind Agard as per norm.

I'm not sure Baudry's issue is the usual one of the legs going, I think his reaction speed has gone.  He's a second or two behind doing what he should be.  The goal was a good example, he'd tracked the run well enough but hadn't reacted in time to the cross itself to get anything goal side of Agard.  He was also slow in stepping up a minute or two back, Crichlow was gesturing what the rets were trying to do.  It's similar to the earlier part of last season where he looked like a player who was rusty, but he can't seem to shake that off.  The game is just moving faster than his brain.

Is that the slowness of thought that we have seen from the likes of Gladwin and co who were regaining fitness and were rusty?

Yes and no, I am not sure Baudry has anywhere to go.  I think two seasons running suggests this just may be the beginning of the end of his career.  Such a drop off from the first season with us.  Gladwin is gradually improving and was not a speed of thought issue.  I think his was physical, he looks like the sort of player that needs a lot of "winding-up" to get to full speed.

Enjoyable half. Lucky to still be 1-1. Like the look of East, Dabre and flashes of Aguiar. Mitchell Lawson doesn’t seem to offer much. Lyden and Hunt pretty good. More good saves from Ward.

We seem very easy to get at.

Centre backs may be needed in January. We’ve done well to keep the first choice back three fit, but they need competition and back up. Iandolo could drop in, so could Grant, but I’m not sure we even have youth players who can come in there so we (otherwise, they’d presumably be playing tonight).

To be fair to Baudry, I think the Plymouth front players are more like what he faced last season and there would be plenty of carthorses at our level that he could probably handle, but not for much longer.

Too many of ours were wasteful - Odimayo, Lyden - off the pace - Baudry, JML - or marginal - Dabre, Parsons.

Hunt and East ok, but not clicking as a team since the first 15. Not that surprising or concerning in the circumstances, but you’d like to see more claims for a first team place.

Title: Re: Papa John’s Tournament???
Post by: RobertT on Tuesday, October 12, 2021, 18:48:41
Something to work on with Dabre, but he does have a hint of the McNamee about him.

East looks comfortable enough, as does Lyden and the latter has match fitness to come yet.

Aguiar has potential but is a bit whispy - he floats in an out of the game too easily for my liking.  Again, something to work with and develop though.

Parsons is clearly a level below Simpson, which means that would be my priority for any strengthening we can manage in January.

Good enough half all things considered.  They are weaker than their first team, but so are we, by a margin.  You can see the impact of Garner because the football is the same regardless of the players.  Shows his coaching skills, still skeptical about his long term career as a Manager.

It is.

I think we also need to take into consideration....

Plymouth have a very experienced team tonight, they have a striker playing who has scored over 100 1st team goals.
Plymouth are top of league 1.
This performance so far is better than under Wellens last season at Home Park.
And this is 1 million times better than anything under Shieridactyl.

It's far too raw though - he is playing almost entirely on instinct mixed with good ball skills and pace.  I am not sure he has much idea how to play football though - if we can coach that into him he could be a real talent.  Great ide to throw him on for 10 minutes when chasing a game though - nobody has any idea what will happen.

Oh I agree, he looks eager to please but not always sure what to do when he gets in good positions, very very raw but he does have potential and he will get the crowd going as McKirdy does if he came off the bench in the league at home especially for the last 10 mins of a game we are winning easily.

What a half for Mitchell Lawson! Love Dabre. East could play in the first XI no bother.

Aguiar is very skilful. Fuck me, we ain’t half bad. Again, a distinct lack of pointless tippy tappy.

Good game that.

Ward did well and a great throw for the second goal.  Nice to have two good keepers.

Baudry is going to be risky against any teams with competent forwards - the second half suggests he may survive against lesser players though.

Dabre is a box of tricks - nobody probably knows how to use them yet, but worth keeping an eye on.

Mitchell-Lawson showed he can be a pain the backside if played in the right position.  I don't know that you can play him as a lone striker, but with someone else occupying people near him, he was a real danger in the second half playing on the last shoulder.

East could easily step into the first team and Lyden looked goo enough with fitness to come (hopefully).

Overall, a lot of promise.  Some rawness about the team tonight, but that is to be expected.  Iandolo still worries me in defence and we could do with another striking option with some presence/box instinct.  Overall, we are in pretty good shape considering the past year.

Ended up winning convincingly. A few still some way off the first team - Dabre, Parsons - but Cowmeadow and Aguiar were encouraging in spells, JML much better second half, and I’d put East ahead of Lyden on this showing. McKirdy is having a ball at the moment. We’re getting up a head of (GWR) steam.

I think I'd find it difficult to pick a MotM there. Thought it was a good team performance.

Energetic start then head dropped when we conceded. Confidence built after a couple of saves by Ward and a HT pep talk. Improved again in the second half and then looked awesome after the substitutions.

Scott Lindsey:
- Want to create a winning environment
- Got minutes into players who haven't played much
- Chance to see them from a coaching perspective
- Played against a stronger team than we thought we'd face
- Played good football at a good intensity
- Spoke about making runs behind them at half time
- Great ball, run and finish
- Practice every eventuality in training. Try to teach how to work out teams and problem solve
- JML did what he's good at. Good pace and runs in behind. In first half we came too deep
- McKirdy: Exciting and makes things happen. Works hard. Please with him
- Really strong squad including younger players.
- There will be moments when we need these players
- Coming up a strong opposition is good
- Dabre is more of a winger than wing back. Can be done if you balance it up properly
- Dabre up against 200-300 game experience player did well
- Cowmeadow: Good to bring academy players in. Cowmeadow has done well in training
- Odimayo felt his hamstring a little
- Wollacot: No surprise he was in the Ghana team. He's a good keeper. Fair play to him
- Numbers back at the weekend. Will assess when they come back on Thursday
- Not surprised we have difficult decisions to make on Saturday.
- We have built a strong squad with competition for places

Really good team. I’m hoping for a win tonight to get back in contention to see if we can progress in this competition. If we were to go up this might be our only chance to win a trophy for a long time (hopefully).

My take on Garnerball is that he knew we were behind on fitness so encouraged a very keep ball at all costs approach until we got up to full speed, we've now been pressing more and are looking to be more progressive with our passing.  Hope we continue to improve as the signs are good at the moment.

Don't think we're through yet.
Could come down to goal difference etc if 3 teams finish on 6 points.

As for the game, a good watch.
Very impressed with the overall performance, particularly when compared with some of the disjointed efforts by scratch teams in previous years.
That's credit to the coaching and possibly a benefit from working with a smaller squad.

Would like to see Dabre being gradually introduced at the end of games if we are coasting. No rush though if we stay in this competition.

Three cup games and undefeated in the 90 minutes. Whatever next.

Ditto.

Improve the home form and play McKirdy at home to get the crowd going and maybe bring Dabre on if we are winning late in the game to just lighten the game up with his little devilry! that should be enough to get the crowd buzzing.

My concerns with "Garnerball" was that we were playing way too many short passes at the back and putting us under pointless pressure at the back, in the last 3 games that has stopped almost entirely, and also when McKirdy is on we have normally 3 proper attackers, when its just Simpson on his own we look less likely to score, although I think Simpson is very good hes much better with a player who plays closer to him.

Shit cup or not that was a decent performance against a strong side, Hardie on his own has more league goals in his career than all of our team combined have career goals, and Agard many many more, they also played some very experience players in Camara (crazy legs crane), Hardie, Agard, Mayor, Edwards, Wilson, and also Garrick also their "fringe players" had loads of experience too at league level Gillesphie, Burton,

We had just Baudry and Hunt that had more than 100 football league appearances in the entire side that started or finished the game!

I think this is more likely his personality.

Ward was on t'radio pre game talking about McKirdy, he was asked "what is it like to have McKirdy around the dressing room" to which Ward answered "it doesnt matter what personality he has off the pitch, its about what he does on the pitch that matters". Which sounded a bit like "I wont answer that question".

‘We all know that Harry is going to play at a higher level eventually and be worth a bit of money, he has the potential anyhow.

Apol's thought it had been discussed on here before.

Basically he is a peculiar character that takes things very personally (as I think is common knowledge), at Carlisle the whole thing was exacerbated by the fans getting on his back after a couple of bad games which sped it all falling to bits.

Reading about McKirdy, he seems like an very talented but yet emotional player.   Right now it seems like he has found a home that he is accepted and thriving in but often with players like this it can turn quickly.  But maybe the coach just knows how to reach him.  in american football, coaches like Bilicheck get those players that have had issues elsewhere to buy in and just want to win with the team..hopefully this is the case at Swindon, I like the way McKirdy plays

yeah they are cigarettes, not a clue as to why they are known as fags, Dr Google or Susie Dent would be your best bet :)

According to a random site I found after a quick Alta Vista search..........

'Hand rolled cigarettes often have loose strands of tobacco sticking out of the end. These were thought to resemble the cut, and frayed end of a piece of rope, called the fag-end. Cigarettes were therefore referred to as fag ends, quickly shortened to fags.'

The language in the 2 countries, despite both English speaking can be very different.

I remember in Florida I popped into a shop to pick up a few bits of food etc but I left a bag and went back and said I had left 'a bag of shopping' in the store from earlier. The assistant looked at me as if I had 2 heads. 'Your what?' she said. 'my shopping, in a bag' I replied. I had to translate this to 'groceries' before she knew what I was talking about.

I know about the term to go on a bender, but why would a QB be described as a "bender"? It doesn't seem to fit either of those phrases?

The language in the 2 countries, despite both English speaking can be very different.

It's quite fun - the reality is that most of American English is actually Ye Olde English and it hasn't evolved in the same way as traditional English (misnomer alert) has.

Soccer AM was a fairly popular saturday morning show. Not sure if it's still going. Yeah we use bender to mean go out drinking on a mad one too.

Boston Goals (I doubt you'll find it as funny as I do though):

What does bender mean in Yankee language?

It was in reference to him being an airbender I think (There's a kids tv show called The Last Airbender) because of a celebration he did... But they just referred to him as a bender and I am very immature so found it very funny!

TBH back in the 70s and early 80s everyone called a curling shot a "bender" even though it has always had a double meaning, When Swansea came to the CG in 1980 they had a huge banner which said "Alan Curtis bends more balls than Jeremy Thorpe" in reference to the gay allegations about ex MP Jeremy Thorpe at the time but also to Curtis's ability to curl a football.

Even before this competition became controversial (well, a bit of a farce if we're being honset) it wasn't usually taken seriously until you got towards the latter stages (which we've only done... twice IIRC, one final and one 'area' final). That hasn't really changed! It's just a chance for some reserves to get a run out.

Tonight's game is a moot point though. We've already qualified out of the group so the result doesn't really matter all that much.

Like the old Football Combination, this is an opportunity for stiffs, yooves and returners from injury to get up to speed and gel with a handful of first team automatic choices with our style and systems.  A step up from a friendly behind closed doors or regular training.  So both useful and interesting.

Would any cards tonight have a bearing on suspensions in any other competitions?

In midfield and forward areas, we have an array of fringe-talent who are a shoe-in for tonight's game...

CM - Ryan East and Jordan Lyden
AM/Wing - Alex Gilbert and Mo Dabre
FOR - Jayden Mitchell-Lawson and Harry Parsons

But much less so at the back...

I'd be loathe to play Conroy at all - we've already got Crichlow and Baudry out injured - and at a push, you might have to use Odimayo and Rob Hunt tonight to form a functioning defence. Something like:

Harrison Minturn (U18) - Akin Odimayo - Anthony Grant (available??) - Rob Hunt

Think we'd have to formally end his loan at Chippenham Town, which has about a week left to run on the initial month, for him to play tonight. And don't think they'll do that when he's doing so well at Chipp and we've already got loads of midfielders who can play tonight.

Minturn's a decent size, yes. Think people look at the fully developed facial hair and get tricked into thinking he's more of a beast that he is...?

Anyway, hope he gets a go. Why not find out about him tonight? Venkman's right though, huge step up, even to a professional reserve game like this - good luck to him.

Yes, Cowmeadow a good height and build, handy for a wide-forward. Sadly, I think Cowmeadow is injured for tonight - he limped off early in the FA Youth Cup win against Winchester City last week.

Suspect we might see a bit of midfielder Levi Francis off the bench tonight. Doesn't matter who you're playing, three goals from midfield is always going to catch the eye!

Never seen that before!

Ref gives a penalty for taking ball off of Lydens toe

Then realises he's made a mistake so gives a drop ball.

McKirdy then goes ape shit that we haven't got a penalty

I think the Ref had pre-empted what he thought was about to happen and blew up with that instinct in mind, despite the fact it didn't happen and the keeper had got the ball cleanly.

i have noticed that the 1st team defense and then again right now really struggle with the balls sent across, especially those on set plays....is it a philosophy issue to defense or is it poor training on how to put your foot on the ball and get it out of the box?

It's because of the lack of height in our defence. If you have someone who is going to win everything in the air you can afford to defend a bit deeper

Pinball in our box.

Dabre brings it out. Lyden goes in with a strong challenge where both players end up on the floor. Surprisingly, Lyden get up and the other fella looks to be limping - Would have put money on it being the other way

JML shot from edge of the box - Wide and he was offside

Great ball from Parsons unleashes McKirdy, who puts a poor ball in to JML, which inexplicably gets to him (missed by 2 defenders). JML takes a touch and drags it wide to the left of goal. McKirdy bollocks him for not laying it back to him where he had an open goal beckoning him.

Well, I don't really know what to make of that.  I think it was bad, maybe terrible in terms of standard/quality, but it was actually mildly enjoyable to watch.

You can't be too harsh on the youngsters, but you'd be worried if any of the defenders had to play regular first team football anytime soon on that showing.

McKirdy has not been informed of the pointlessness of it all.

Of everyone on show, Gilbert has disappointed me - I'd like him to have taken this as an opportunity to show his wares off a bit.  He's been a bit off the pace, but should have more talent then everyone else on show - which he has shown in little glimpses.

JML has something - he makes good runs, but has fluffed a couple of finishes even if one was offside.

how does the team deal with this then if they make the same conclusion?  do they release him at some point and try to get someone else to develop?  do they just leave him on a lower team...how does a football team deal with a player they have deemed not worth continuing with.  Can you pick up another player at any time or is there certain times of the season?

Dabre is not a left back, left wing back, winger, forward, midfielder, anything.  He's a 5-aside talent, a street footballer if you like.  Needs a lot of refining to get a position sorted, but full of talent.  A similar but different problem that JML brings - how do you teach him the missing bits?  Dabre is great with a football, just not sure he is great at football.

It’s called the ‘Transfer Window’. It’s where you can trade players that are already attached to a team. You can pay money to the club if they are willing to do business (a transfer fee), get the player for free (if they are about to become out of contract or it’s a mutual decision between all involved), or on a loan (have this player for a while but he belongs to us and we can have him back whenever we want). But the most important terminology in this whole thing is ‘WHEN THE TRANSFER WINDOW SLAMS SHUT’ which is exclaimed loudly from the rooftops by every tabloid as the transfer deadline looms. I think I’ve got all that right

That's what I mean about him having a much better skillset than nearly everyone on the pitch, if not everyone.  When he gets involved, he is a class above, but h seems to drift around for too long.  He's the opposite of Dabre who just wants to be involved in everything, and then forgets he has a position to play.

Well, a terrible yet fun game.  Not sure we would have learned much about anyone from that, other than McKirdy must be a pain in the arse at training.

East looks a good player.  Gilbert needs to get hold of the game a bit more - there is a lot there but too happy to be on the periphery.

We have won four cup games and drawn one this season, what is going on?

Oh, and Phll Smith seems to get properly excited about "playing it into the corner"

McKirdy easily my MotM he was like the Duracell bunny.

On the plus side....Garner has now won 4 cup ties already, must be the first manager to have won than many cup ties probably since PdC.

Seeing as we only had 1 player from the 11 that beat Crewe that wasn’t a bad performance. The 2 young CBs did fine. Got caught out of position at times - as did the WBs - and there were some huge gaps for Newport to exploit but weren’t good enough to profit from it.

Got to mention the sheer work rate of Dabre, though. Sure, he loses possession too often, but he’s not a WB. Good to see Lyden get through 90 minutes without a leg falling off or somesuch.

East wouldn’t let us down when he’s called upon to start.

Weird game, really.

Scott Marshall:
- Pleased with the result tonight and in this competition
- Young boys came in who haven't played in the league
- Showed they were hungry, competitive and fit
- Winchcombe & Minturn: Good competition to give them a chance
- Have included them in training when the opportunity has presented itself
- Did well today in first senior experience
- Could help them in the future
- Lads performed well and training well. Wouldn't single anyone out. The group drives each other on
- You can a lot of similarity between the way the team played tonight and in the league
- Parsons and Dabre at wingback: Two young guys learning the game. Playing a different position always helps you. They are out there performing and learning a different area of the pitch. In the future they may understand team mates better
- Lyden: Where is he in the pecking order? Marshall wouldn't answer. Just said he has had minutes under his belt
- Don't think players are putting pressure on others. They are being competitive and showing professionalism and competitiveness
- Baudry: Discussions today, but not sure as was focussing on tonight's game
- Opportunity to have a rest over the weekend. We've had a good block of work up to this point. Worked hard this morning, have one more session  before the weekend.
- Catch a breath and then get ready to go again against Newport
- This game won't be the same as the next one against Newport.
- Walsall in the Cup? Great, but we have games before that to look at first.

Well, I thoroughly enjoyed that !

I think for a team of youngsters they did very well. There was some pretty slick passing at times, and some great runs off the ball. We were very exposed on the wings, which Newport took advantage of, but didn't make as much of it as they should've. But what do you expect when we were playing 2 attackers as wing backs. Dabre was caught out of position so often, but I must admit I admired his terrier-like response of not being afraid to get stuck into some much bigger opponents, and he is so fast !

The 2 youth team defenders making their debuts kept a clean sheet, although they were caught out of position at times, they made up for it with their athleticism and enthusiasm !

You've just got to love watching McKirdy, he's such a livewire, full of running and skill on the ball and it's fun to watch him winding up himself, his opponents and the match officials !

It was good to see Lyden get some much needed minutes into his legs, and I thought East looked well capable of covering for the first team if required. Mitchell - Lawson gets into some very good positions and is very quick, but he really does need to improve on his finishing if he's going to fulfil his potential.

A home win at last, a clean sheet and no injuries - all in all quite a good night !

For the goal, when you’re watching live all you remember is the goal itself. Only upon watching the replay do you appreciate the fantastic bit of skill, couple of great passes that led up to it.

I do hope this group achieve something tangible this season.

I usually boycott these games, but out of sheer fascination I decided to tune in. The line-up reminded me of being at school a little where you would just put people in random positions; 'Scott, you are wearing Cat Boots, so you go Centre back' etc etc. Parsons and Dabre at Wing Back and 2 youth players at CB along with Rob Hunt doesn't scream clean sheet but to be fair, it got one!

Ignoring the quality of the game, I really enjoyed it. Both teams looked to pass out from the back but we looked to have more energy and press better than them. I thought Minturn and Winchombe to make first team debuts against some decent experienced lower league forwards did brilliantly, and not afraid to bring the ball out from the back either. Sure positionally at times not great, but neither are the first team CBs when the ball is fired into our box. I've said my piece on Dabre on the Man of the Match thread and someone I think hit the nail on the head on this thread but what is he? He certainly is not a Left Wing Back for certain! It was hilarious when he would see the Newport player in acres of space on the right wing, and then remember he was supposed to be there, and then sprint back into position. To his credit, the guy worked his socks off.

Not too much you can draw from that, JML is clearly not a Simpson replacement and does look raw. McKirdy remains a walking yellow card but you can see at times he has huge ability but does play on the edge. Good to give Lyden 90 and East looked assured too. Gilbert showed glimpses but I think his body language showed that his heart wasn't really in it.

We go into the hat, or on a playing card, or in a pizza box or whatever gimmick they use to draw this thing.

Draw is on Saturday after the lunchtime game on Sky Sports I think.
With 2 southern groups yet to be decided, Ipswich, Portsmouth, Franchise, Charlton & Stevenage are all quaking in their boots.
£20k for the 2nd round winners.

Four of the U21 sides have qualified so far as it stands.

I suspect it will depend to a degree on the opponents, at the moment it providing useful reserve games for the squad, plus there will possibly be a bit of loyalty shown (like with the PL clubs and the League Cup).

When will be the trigger point when fans stop boycotting and start wanting us to win it, I cannot remember whether PaulD was a boycotter but if so may have been a bit torn the other night.

My views on this cup are slowly swaying. the introduction of u21 was disgusting BUT this season more than ever highlights how much these tournaments help the club with money. Getting through the rounds and getting decent crowds in general for this cup is a good cash boost.

now that the money is seemingly ours instead of a power type person I feel much more engaged. We also seem to have the squad to compete in it without effecting our league campaign.

winning things is awesome. I still remember the area final and the buzz of getting to Wembley. I miss it and want it back with this current set up.

I would always want to success in the league over this and the moment it looks like it's affecting it I would want out.

As well as the moment an u21 gets to the final/wins it.

Couldn’t agree more. I don’t like the introduction of the U21 teams but winning creates positivity, it brings in money and gives us a chance to test fringe players and hopefully entice young fans to come back (esp with the slightly earlier kick offs).

I hope the rest of you can appreciate this perspective and get yourselves and others through the turnstiles to continue adding to the positivity of this season and new era.

I can appreciate the prize money cash. But I'm never going to this competition.

I've given what i can to the club, including waving refunds, buying merchandise I wouldn't normally and renewing an u18 season ticket that will be used a handful of times.

I enjoy watching the fringe players in action, and its part of the iFollow season ticket so I will carry on watching.

If I lived much nearer Swindon and actually went to most/every home game then I doubt very much I would bother going. My mood to this competition has been easing recently as well, its a good chance of extra income and it IS a 1st team fixture despite what some fans may have decided.

Wembley is a long long way off so couldn't even call that until a lot closer but after the last forrays there under PdC and Cooper I am less eager to attend in person.

There is some good prize money on offer though so the longer we are in this the better IMO and Garner seems to like it.

U21s this season!

Yes just abolish any age limit to the Premier teams so they can play any fringe players they want, much like the League Cup has turned into now, problem solved. Even if the Prem teams CHOOSE to play U21s or U23 then thats up to them but don't make it a proviso of the competition.

A return to the proper JPT format would see me go again, i.e. no premier League teams.

if it's not viable without them, it's not for me.

That reserves have to rely on this to get a game is ridiculous. we are limited by how many we can play given we have to field a number of first team players anyway.

we can literally field weaker teams in the fa cup and League cup without issue. it's stupid.

Post by: Jimmy HaveHave on Sunday, November 14, 2021, 14:36:43
Same here I also used to enjoy watching the combination games as there were often top players on display from the big London teams who were recovering from injury or just out of favour. The problem now is that there's are too many players at clubs who don't get any actual games.

Although I said it's good for the club etc it is still not swaying me enough to ever go to a paint match. I will go to the area final / final if we make it. Until that happens it will be a passing interest with intrigue of the back ups performing well, pleasing to get results and pleasing to get finances in.

I know we get cash for progression but with boycotts the game itself could lose money?

Because I'm bored at work, here's an England B XI entirely composed of players with 3 caps or fewer (in reality I imagine the fringe players would get picked)

Aaron Ramsdale

Ben White
Fiyako Tomori
Trevor Chalobah

Tarik Lamptey
James Justin

Conor Gallagher
Curtis Jones

Emile Smith-Rowe
Patrick Bamford
Jarrod Bowen

Bench of:

Dean Henderson
Ben Godfrey
Tino Livramento
Aaron Cresswell
Callum Hudson-Odoi
James Madison
Mason Greenwood

Think they'd probably do okay...

There might have been others, but one England C international that we had that I can think of was John Goddard.
Signing for a league club would have brought an end to his England C team career I guess.

Quite a few who played for the C team have gone on to have decent careers at league level.

In the minority, but I enjoy watching these games.
I enjoy watching them too, doubt I would go even if I lived closer but I do like watching the fringe players get a run out, and wins do breed confidence, 3 wins out of 3 in this cup and 2 of those were at home!

Got my Covid booster at 6pm 30 miles away so may miss the start but will be back to watch as soon as possible.

Apparently Colchester have a lot of injuries George, Wiredu, Tchamadeu, Eastman, Judge, Clampin, Kennedy and some more not mentioned carrying knocks. Ex Town player Bouble expected to start.

At least the wind wont be as aggressive as it was on Saturday levelling the match as it did.

Great chance to progess against one of the lowest placed sides still left in this cup with ony 3 wins in the last 12 games.

Pretty much this, although surely Grant will get a run out in central defence,  instead of one of the youths, to give him some game time,  as we are not blessed with experienced cover in that area with Baudry out.

Absolutely, grant did well at CB under Wellens at Plymouth especially but we don't even know if Grant himself likes playing there let alone Garner.

I do hope that Grant gets some game time, I have forgotten when he looks like and TBH Andrew hawes will probably mistake him for Lyden or East at some point too as he often does get 1 per game very wrong!

When you do your match updates on here do you have to keep logging out of iFollow to post them on here or do you have 2 tablets.

I have a feeling we will line up...

                    Ward
      Winchcombe Crichlow Minturn
Hunt           East     Lyden         Dabre
       JML          McKirdy      Gilbert
Not too far out with my guess.

                    Ward
            Grant  Crichlow Minturn
Francis        East     Lyden         Dabre
       JML          McKirdy      Gilbert

Good challenge this for the reserves/youths.  Unlike the previous three games we have a team who have put out a good team against us with experience and playing in tough conditions.

It shows up how they can play under a bit of pressure - in some cases it's not been pretty for them.

Conditions look trickier than Saturday - some passes along the floor are being pushed around by the gusts.

Couple of the younger lads looking a bit ropey and all over the shop as a team defending some good set pieces.

Minturn was the deepest player, so playing them all on and back past our own back post.  Getting a sense he is out of his depth tonight, tough game for him which may help in the long run?

Think they mentioned Francis is playing out of position, which likely explains why he looks a little lost when trying to get into a defensive position at times.  Dabre still looks like a 5 a-side player to me.  They are getting very little help (performance wise) from Grant and Crichlow as well.

A bit earlier than the second half for their keeper to create a chance for us, sort of.

I think Francis and Minturn are struggling with the combination of the conditions and the pace of the game when a team takes it more seriously.  Hopefully the conditions will ease the pressure on them a bit in the second half.

I understand we have changed the complete team. However, that was a defensive performance worthy of last year.

Minturn not having a great game.
Grant looking very slow and not a CB option

Overall, lucky to be only a goal down.  The second string are having a tough time against more experience opposition and the tough conditions with the wind being a real pest.

Ward - think he could have taken a bit more responsibility in that half and took the risk of cleaning house from the corners.  Couple of good one on one saves though.

Francis - not going to judge his career on that half, he's a bit all over the place and a few yards behind the pace of the game.  Couple of nice passes when there has been time.

Minturn - similar to Francis, completely disconnected from Grant at times, getting caught watching the game and has tried a little too hard in the last 10.

Grant - couple of good clearances but he was about to let rip at Minturn before, I assume, remembering he is coaching a youth player through a game.

Crichlow - a mixed bag.  Got to wonder if he gets coached through a game by more experienced players around him?

Dabre - I don't see an immediate future for him beyond five to ten minute cameo's, and not at left back if we were ever defending a lead!  Great skills, not much positional sense and no patience when defending, chases the ball, the players, bits of rubbish, anything near him.  Like a Jack Russell.

Lyden and East - look good on the ball, a bit flimsy off it that half.

Gilbert - he really hasn't kicked on.  Still kind of drifting through a game without ever really getting a grip on it.  Nice technique, is it enough?

JML - I like what I see.  Not that he has played well, but he looks like a player you could coach and try and get the good bits out of him.

McKirdy - done OK, got annoyed, had a grumble, couple of good touches, couple of blind alleys.

Title: Re: Papa John’s Tournament???
Post by: Nomoreheroes on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, 20:34:08
The bits I have enjoyed:

- McKirdy's curler from the left
- McKirdy remonstrating over Francis's yellow was funny
- McKirdy quickly trying to cross for Crichlow's goal

What I didn't enjoy:
- Lack of defending
- Poor passing
- Dribbling down blind alleys

Title: Re: Papa John’s Tournament???
Post by: Peter Venkman on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, 20:35:31
Grant, JML and McKirdy our best players for me so far, Lyden grew into it but the rest were all disappointing, still the wind will be behind us 2nd half so it could easily change.

Title: Re: Papa John’s Tournament???
Post by: Peter Venkman on Tuesday, November 30, 2021, 20:38:46
If anyone was in any doubt as to Colchester taking it more seriously than we are....here are the 1st team appearances of both sets of players, its a shocking difference of experience.

If you take Grant out of our side (the only one with 100+ games) we can only muster 258 appearance between 10 players including Ward and McKirdy, we have 7 players with 20 or less 1st team starts.

Ward 60
Grant 626
Crichlow 18
Minturn 1
Francis 0
East 3
Lyden 49
Dabre 3
JML 20
McKirdy 98
Gilbert 6

If you look at Colchester they have 5 players with 400+ appearances each and only 3 starters with less than 20 1st team starts.

Turner 17
Welch_Hayes 105
Chambers 794
Smith 422
Skuse 604
Judge 426
Sears 445
Chilvers 76
Jasper 19
Dobra 41
Coxe 13

We have 3 teenagers starting and Colchester have zero.

Hes a good player, seem him a few times and he always impresses, usually at LB or LCB though. Cant be too bad if Fulham are keen on him either.

Considering the inexperienced line up that we played today (5 teenagers) if we could grab a draw it would be a great achievement.

Second half was alright.  Minturn will want to forget he played that one - certainly shows where we would need to be adding heads if we want to continue the challenge all season.

JML is the opposite of a natural finisher.  Makes some good runs, gets into good positions, looks like he is kicking concrete when trying to apply the final touch.

Gordon looked a bit more composed than Francis.  Overall, that should help the second string continue to develop.

Oh well - out we go. Good to see some of the academy players out there. Gordon in particular impressed. Minturn had a bit of a shocker sadly. Gilbert was very very poor for someone so close to the first team - dreadful dead ball delivery every time

Minturn would have learnt more in that game last night than all the academy games he’s played put together.

That’s why this competition is worthwhile.

Didn't minturn play last game, and played well.

Big step up last night for them. Blooding our own youngsters, or having the choice to is perfect for this comp.

Should be allowed to field who we want

To me this just shows how seriously this competition is taken.  Ok for runouts but surely not expecting to progress with a team of reserves.

Minturn did indeed play well in the last game, didn't look out of place at all in the 1st team, hes impressed me at academy level too but last night nothing worked for him, lets hope his head doesnt drop.

Fox and Gordon both impressed and Francis did a few loose passes but in the main did ok, especially when Gordon and Francis were not playing in their natural positions.

TBH we pretty much can play who we want in these games the rules are way laxer than they used to be, lets face it, Colchester had 1 teenager on the pitch all game, we had 6! and not one starter was a starter from our last game 3 days ago.

I dont think we cant use the "why cant we play who we want" as an excuse any more in this cup as it pretty much allows all L1 and L2 teams to play almost any player, we chose to play a very very inexperienced team whereas Colchester chose to play a team with nearly 3,000 1st team games between them! a quantity that our entire 1st team squad of 30 players can't match!

Even with Grant our team could muster only around 800 and 622 of those were Grant! even on their bench they had 2 players with 400+ games behind them, and if you ignore Midly who was never going to get on the pitch our bench had a grand total of 1 1st team appearance between them!

The result and some of the defending was very poor and the standard was the worst we have seen in the 4 games we have played in this cup but TBH the difference in the sides were the 3 experienced players in Grant for us and Judge and Chambers for them.

As long as our players came through unscathed I am not bothered by losing at all, it was good to get valuable 1st team game time under the belt for our 6 teenagers Minturn, Dabre, Francis, Gordon, Fox and Dworzak in a competitive match.

Minturn played with his Academy partner in the last game (can't recall his name) and both looked adequate. I guess partnering him with a first team pro, might have thrown him as he would be unfamiliar with how Critchlow plays etc.

I know it's a very inexperienced side but my main concern this season is how we are defensively. Balls into the box cause absolute mayhem and Colchester's 2 goals were very simple for them. Conversely I thought Mckirdy put some absolutely brilliant crosses in (based on the clips on twitter, I didn't watch the game) which were begging to be finished.

Disappointed to read about JML's finishing, I think this just confirms the need for 1 or 2 proper strikers when the transfer window slides open. Looks like Gilbert's time could be up based on feedback from here also.

Agreed.

Garners ambition was reflected in the selection. Brucey bonus if we got through, we didnt, he would probably only pick a strong line up in the semis anyway.

I wont lose any sleep over going out of the shit show this cup has become. Shame really.

Did anybody get injured? Hope not.

McKirdy put 2 good balls into the box in his 60 mins but we didnt get the ball to him as much as we should due to the ineffective midfield. Thats all McKirdy did though as well as 1 long ranger that was saved easily. JML looked good first half but OMG his finishing was abysmal as was Gilberts.

With better finishing we would probably have won the tie easily though despite defensive errors.

I had it on the laptop but drifted in and out. the first half was a shambles defensively as expected with 11 new players thrown together. thought 2nd half we knocked it round really well, created some good moments and the players grew into the game.

2nd half was a decent watch although it this was a league game and we needed something i would have a different view. the kids did well in what was a huge step against some very senior players

I have to say I have no recollection of minutes 55-70.

I don't think it was football related either. simply old man catnap

it does explain why I thought mckirdy was quiet in the last 20 ☺️

The competition has definitely served a purpose this season and although I didn’t make it last night, I’ve found it a bit of a guilty pleasure and enjoyed the matches and mix of players getting a run out.

I wonder who we will see out on loan now we’ve exited, Dabre would be an obvious one to benefit.
