Title: Official Southampton Vs Swindon Town matchday thread
Post by: DUNSWORTHY on Saturday, February 26, 2011, 04:52:31
Here's to another Saturday
1-1 with another early goal conceded, Obika to get off the mark and a generally good all round performance

For once I have a really good feeling about today's game.

I think we will win 1-0 after a Mike Grella goal.

I am very optimistic about Grella and Obika as a striker partnership, and we really do have a strong recent history at St. Mary's, haven't lost since 1996!

Going with a couple of saints fans today so I hope we win, it's been great having the 4-0 over them. Anyway, a good performance and 1-1, Dougie to score  :D

I've had a feeling all week that we're going to get a result today. Still feeling strangely optimistic this morning.

My first away day since Rochdale and that finished 3-3.

2-1 Swindon. I won't be going or listening in anyway, just like the last 4 meetings between us. Therefore we win.

Grella with a 35 yard screamer in the 87th minute

Not particularly optimistic - but I'm still excited at the prospect of our new signings.  They could cause a few problems.  I don't expect Southampton to wallop us.  Fingers crossed.

And if we do get thumped, there's England vs France at 5pm to take my mind off it.

I can't see us winning whilst tans is still alive. He's pissed off god with his sinful ways and unless we sacrifice him via the medium of fire and knives then we've got no chance of making the play offs.

Goal difference is just about in our favour at the moment...got to keep it respectable. Here's hoping  :badmood:

Yes you can. I don't have advance tickets either. STFC Box office told me our allocation is something silly like 3,000 and we only sold 1,000 up front so you won't have any issues apparently... :-)

7-1 is only 150-1 ffs. You can even get 8-0 for 500-1. I have gone for my Jonny Douglas 3-2 combo to us  (again).

This is starting to seem a bit hopeless....  There's more to this run than tactics, subs etc.  The players need an almighty size ten up the arse, and as Danny Wilson is only a size eight I'm beginning to wonder if he's the right man for the job....

On paper, this squad is considerably better than the league would suggest.  As a biased fan, you have to believe that a lucky result in our favour would revamp our season (I'm not going to use the word "kickstart"), but the Charlton result should have been the catalyst and it clearly wasn't.

It's been said a thousand times before, but as opposed to?  Alex Ferguson would struggle to pull us out of this nosedive.

The last time we things seemed so dire were those infamous 7 games under Andy King before we nicked a win at home to Mansfield and ultimately he turned it round, and eventually took us to the playoffs.  At least now the club is being run properly and we've got a good squad, shame they don't know how to play together.

Fuck, Orient have equalised at Huddersfield screwing up my accumulator.

Anyone, really.

Sir Alex wouldnt have got us into this nose dive to start with.

He had United in a nosedive in 1986 :-|

I'm completely exasperated with Swindon.  I live fairly locally to Southampton, and I'm going to Portsmouth tomorrow to see my sister, and ordinally I'd have tied it in with a trip to see the town, but I couldn't face wasting £40 on watching us get dicked.

Pfffffffftttt.... 4-1.  Says it all.

Shit result obviously, but it doesn't change anything.

We know Saints are better than us at the moment and likely to win today. We won't be staying up or going down based on not picking up points at Saint Mary's.

Next 3 games will decide our season. 7 points minimum needed I fear.

Game over.

Another leaky fucking defensive game. OK Saints are a good team, but it is totally and utterly unacceptable to concede 3 or 4 on the road week in, week out.

I am completely fucked off with it. The players need to man the fuck up. Stop feeling sorry for themselves and give every fucking ounce of effort, blood, sweat an tears for the fucking cause.

The amount of goals we have conceded should be a professional embarrassment to everbody involved in the club.

Lastly, Milan Misun. Why?

Of course....  If you look at successful clubs down the leagues, those without massive financial backing have achieve relative success through managerial stability.

As a group of supporters, we don't seem happy unless we're campaigning for a new manager.  The current run is unacceptable, but I don't think giving Wilson the boot would help our current predicament, especially not at the current time.  Fortunately, Fitton isn't an idiot, and I can't see any changes being made until the summer.

As has been said, today's result changes fuck all.  We're not in the bottom four, we've got some winnable games left, it's by no means curtains.  There's fifteen games, and 45 points up for grabs.

I concede something is obviously very wrong, but the blame for me doesn't lie at wholly Wilson's door.

I'm very unhappy with our current run, but if Wilson leaves who will want to take on the mantel?  We'll end up with another Malpas, definitely get relegated, and be in a far worse position this time next year.

Just got back from the game (live in soton and left at 3-1)

First half we played wank and couldnt string 2 passes together.

Second half we came out well and deserved equalier.

Then conceded two sloppy goals and that was that.

Dont know who are defensive coach is but they need sacking.

Frampton is a bag of shit too.

Ritchie impressed me again.

Worrying thing is that their is no togetherness in the team and when a player was on the ball, no players busted a gut to support the other player.

Still think we are going down unless we replace Wilson, but hey ho, it appears hes here till the end of season

Football is a results based business .....  Wilson regardless of last season has been given more than enough time to turn it round and has clearly failed, fed up listening to the excuses.
The board also needs to answer for its transfer policy which since Paynter departure has been very questionable .... not replacing Greer, Paynters experience and overwhelmingly bringing in development projects. Bring Johnson until the end of the season give him a chance to keep us up

I want Gary Johnson now, the only decent realistic person to take over.  If we can't have GJ then I would rather stick with Wilson as we won't get a better caliber of manager in Lge 2 and will end up with Trollope.  At least Wilson will have something to prove.

GJ didn't do well at boro because of the relationship that he had with the chairman, and he was always going to be on a hiding to nothing after what Ferguson achieved there.

Just back.

Very despondent but the Sharp's Ales (as reccomended by another poster on here) on the train across prepared me for the inevitable and the few cans on the return journey numbed me temporarily from the reality that we're doomed.

In the immediate aftermath of our equaliser we looked like a team possessed with belief but then the cruel sucker-punch, but to be fair at the interval thay could easily have been 3 up. Chamberlain, whilst not justifying his outlandish valuations in the transfer window, looks a geuine future talent. Dispensed my free drinks vouchers in Que Pasa after the game to a lucky dozen Town fans  :beers: Not a total waste then  :smugfu:

We need more than a few wins....football is a simple game, our side isn't capable of doing these simple things, therefore will be relegated. The main question for the remainder of the season, is will Plymuff have enough about them to pip us for the wooden spoon.  Today they won a game, with 10 men....which shows they have some fighting spirit left...can you imagine our spineless shower doing that?

Our next three games are vital. No losses, no draws, just 9 points from 9. Then we go into the Huddersfield and Brighton games on decent form. After that another vital 3 winnable games followed by back to back home games against Franchise and Notts.

Sigh.

There is no way Wilson can turn this round. He's had ample opportunity, he's tried everything available to him and we're in total freefall.

Sacking him and letting Bodin take charge would be a better option right now. We might not stay up but nothing could be worse than the incumbent.

Any appointment would have to be external.

It's all hypothetical anyhow.

Where did you get to before the game?

Not Bodin specifically, just anyone who isn't Wilson really...

Was a good player, doing a good job at youth level but not sure as 1st team manager.

Look what happened when Iffy took over.

Why?

You think the majority would be happy if Shirtliff or Bodin took over?

For me, an internal appointment within our scenario is the ultimate indicator of a club resigned to League Two.

I write this fully aware that we're "down anyway so blah blah blah"....

But again Wilson doesn't help himself when he makes decisions like this, I think he could have kept him on tbh.

Every week we say that he'll get till the next game though, it has been the same story for about 6 weeks now.  Too little too late I'm afraid, and if the board use their transfer policy when it comes to getting a new manager in we will be stuck with Trollope.  They seem to struggle when it comes to bringing in experience, back to the Malpas days methinks.

If Wilson is here next season then Fitton isn't doing his job properly and questions will be asked.

There are not many other clubs who would stick with their manager after a 11 match winless streak. Even Wilson himself must be wondering how he is still here.

There was an interview with him on Points West the other day and he said 'there's not alot wrong'.  ???

But who we bring in is massive and shows the ambitions of the board.  If they bring in an experienced Lge 1 or above manager then it shows intent to improve whether we go down or not.  If they go for a cheap option then it shows that they have given up on the 5 year plan.

Getting rid of Wilson and bringing in a Malpas esq type manager is a backward step IMO.

Apart from the first 10 minutes of the 2nd half we were fucking woeful. Lucas was dogshit and at fault for at least 2 of the goals. Rose is the worst full back i can remember and that includes Drysdale, Cobian, Duke and Heiselberg. Frampton was complete bollocks and is slower than an upside down tortoise. Caddis and Cuthbert were less shit than the other 2. JPM was blowing out of his arse after 5 minutes. The midfield was non existent - Dougie was shit and so was Ferry. Ritchie was the pick of the bunch. Obika looked out of his depth and Grella ran and ran - all over the midfield where he had to come deep to get the ball.
We had players yet again hiding in midfield and the movement was shite.
On the positive side we had good support down there. the fans got behind the team really well until the end when there were a few Wilson out chants but I think most of the fans have resigned themselves to relegation and couldn't be arsed.
On another positive side the park and ride was brilliant - well organised and friendly.
The Soton fans were absolute shit and the ground is a souless, sterile bowl.
Not sure what went on in the executive boxes but it looks like some Town fans had succesfully woken up a few Saints fans.

the fact that the performances and quality of the team are better but the results are worse says everything that needs to be said about Wilson.

As I've said in other threads. Malpas/Wilsons saving grace that season was the best striker in the division who was capable of winning games for us.

Not judging but the facts are that in 20 mins or so he had about 2 touches and showed no attacking threat and looked very lightweight.

I'd never have a go at a young hope for the future but in this situation his cameo proved that now is probably not the time to be chucking in lightweight unproven kids.

OK, still doesn't change my opinion that we were in a worse state at the end of the Malpas days than we are now.  The only problem is we have less/no time to do anything about it this time around.  We have better players for a new manager to work with than when Wilson came in with the Malpas squad.

It's hard to believe he hasn't been sacked already. If a defeat/draw on Saturday doesn't force the board into action then I don't know what will.

He isn't a bad manager but he's had a shocking season. Again not all his fault, players have to take responsibility for the countless individual errors that have cost us this season.

But Wilson himself especially in the transfer market has been poor. The likes of Dossevi, Rose, Ball, Frampton haven't worked. Prutton is a decent signing at this level but has found it increasingly hard to perform on a regular basis.

The likes of Lucas, Dougie, Cuthbert (possibly because he's without an experienced player alongside him) and McGovern have looked half the players they were last season.

The biggest problem we've had this season is at the back. Selling Greer was the single biggest mistake this club has made  this season, to put it simply, if Greer was still here we wouldn't be where we are at the minute. The way we have been conceding goals this season has been nothing short of pathetic. You build from the back, since the inception of football the successful sides are the ones who are good at defending. You go from there, build a solid base then once your steady at the back you start to create chances up front. It gives the whole team confidence when your keeping clean sheets.

Selling your captain, your leader, your most important defender for 250k when there wasn't a player there to replace him is just pure naivety and has cost us big time. That was the boards call not Wilson's. Lets not forget that.

Yeah, most people thought it was good business in July.

Everyone thought a replacement was forthcoming. Morrison and Cuthbert are two very promising defenders, but are very young and inexperienced. Positionally they are very naiive and needed somebody with a bit of experience alongside them. Look at Cuthbert next to Greer last season, he was exceptional. This season he's been torn to shreds.

No need to tell me about how big a loss Greer was. If I remember correctly I was pretty against his sale back in July.

Alot of people thought there would be better out there for free. I said at the time if there was, Brighton would have gone for them instead of paying us cash.

Think someone said it was because Brighton dont have a good scouting network, hmmm yeah

I'm not knocking the board because they have saved the club I love and invested off the pitch with all the marketing and have backed Wilson, for this there is no question but selling Greer when there isn't a lot of players of his like around was a huge mistake.

Ritchie took his goal well..then got took off,not going to diss Wilson because his hands have been tied.

Yes, but we are trying to explain why our season has gone so horrible wrong. In order to do that we have to look back and things that happen after last season but before now, which is the past, no way around it.

Plus, I'll take any opportunity to say I fucking told you so, in July.

We are not trying to explain why our season has gone so horribly wrong as it has been done in many threads not to mention every match day thread for the last 3 months, i think we all understand what has gone wrong by now!

Fuck me DV, I have met you numerous times and you seem like a decent bloke away from your keyboard, but you do really come across like you think you walk on water once you get a keyboard in front of you.

And don't do the usual reaction once somebody else has opinion like spouting "oh I'm sorry I'm not allowed to say that because I might upset somebody" "I can't say that because i might be right about something", you usually are right DV because you talk sense but stop being so bloody condescending man!  Yours is not the only opinion that counts on here, there are some other posters that have been there and done it and got the certificates too, they just don't shout about it as much!

You are the TEF special one for sure!  ;D

Absolutely piss poor apart from 10 minutes in the second half. Their second and third goals absolutely killed any belief, momentum and desire we had, and the match was all but over, resulting in a pretty uneventful and boring last half hour. Conceding the fourth did it for me though, in a season where a good goal difference is looking increasingly necessary, we just cant hold on for a few simple minutes and give away a fourth.

As for the players, Ritchie by far our best player, but only because the other 10 were absolute dogshit. Lucas was poor, Rose offers us fucking nothing but a hoof up field, more often than not resulting in an opposition throwing and, however much of a talker or leader he's said to be, Frampton is slow, weak and consistently a liability. The midfield was non-existent, forcing Grella, our STRIKER, to virtually come into the MIDFIELD and very deep positions to collect the ball. Yes, the likes of Ferry and Douglas huffed and puffed, but they were completely fucking out of their depth today. Oh, and however glad i am that Douglas is now starting to shoot from long-range and often potential scoring positions, I fucking wish he would get a god damn shot on fucking target. Was Obika even playing?!

Now to Wilson. Bollocks substitutions once again. Taking off our BEST player in Ritchie and replacing him with Bodin? Really?! Bringing Prutton on in right midfield AGAIN?! I know he's not gonna go now, but there were calls for his head today, the first time I've really noticed chants of "we want Wilson out".

Never expected a result, a performance would've be nice. Instead we were treated to defensive mistakes, gutless players and a performance not even worthy of winning a League Two match. Next three games are FUCKING VITAL. Nine points out of nine or we're down. It's the morning fucking after and I'm still majorly pissed off.

The sooner he goes back to millwall the better i hope we dont sign him at the end of the season. i think milan misun will be a player for next season, but should get few in before the end of this, he is highly rated lets hope he can get a run in the team, and form a good partnership with cuthburt or if hes gone, flint who hasnt put afoot wrong and has made a big step up in his carrer.

Spent the weekend in Brighton celebrating a friend's birthday.  Keeping a reasonably regular check on the game, got back to 1-1 and oh nipped to the loo and on returning am informed we're 3-1 down.  Depressing, but oh so predicatable.  Can't comment on the game other than secondhand reports from people I know we went, general consensus being we were poor bar 15 minutes or so, defence was shite (again), strikers can't score, no service to strikers and pathetic subs from Wilson again.  Pretty much the same as the last 8 or so games then?

Just to make me feel that little bit more peed off, I had the pleasure of listening to chants of 'BRIGHTON' and 'Going Up, Going Up' whereever we went and nearly punched some bloke who on learning we came from Swindon revelled in telling me just how shit we were, we'd lost 4-1 that day and Gordon Greer is one of the best defenders they've ever had.  It's not like I've got STFC tattooed across my head, so how did he know to pick on me to be the one that would be bothered?

The next 3 games are vital, but how many times have we said that this season already?  I genuinely don't believe we will win another game with Wilson in charge.  Not only are we now officially the most out of form team in League 1 in terms of point per game, but we are the worst in in the whole of the English Leagues.  Why the hell is Wilson still in a job?

Yesterday could easily pass as the worst day of my life. Everthing had seemed so simple. Take the missus to her first game so she could see what it was all about, i really wish i never bothered. Had planned on leaving Swindon about 10am but didnt set off until 12.45. Whilst having a shower about 9 suddenly the water went cold and could hear the other half screaming downstairs as if she was being murdered. For reasons i dont know something in the boiler broke and water was pissing out of it. 3 hours later i'm £250 worse off and just needed to go to football to ease the foul mood i was now in. I really should not have bothered. Shocking first half display and the missus predictibably bored, half time was a god send just to get a coffee. The equilazier was the highlight of the day. For that minute or so i felt great, cant remember last time scoring a goal felt so good. At least the missus then understood what it was all about being a football fan.
I dont need to talk about the rest of the game. Was a long walk back to the car park. Its hard to hold your head high when you appear to be the one person wearing a Town shirt amongst a sea of Saints fans. Pedictable taunting from a few knobbers but nothing compared to what was about to come. Got to the car and blipped it with the key fob. Nothing. Tried again. Nothing. Never mind maybe the keyfob battery dead so entered the car with the key manually. Went to start engine. Nothing. Not even a glimmer from the interior light or the dashboard. Just the faintest of glows from the battery light on the dash. A car park steward comes over and told me he noticed i left my lights on but we had already left so had no way of contacting us. How could i be so stupid? Angry with myself i took it out on him and said something along the lines of you knew i was going to football why not get a stadium announcement?  Despite the best efforts of four Saints fans trying to bump start the car it simply would not fire up. Could the day get any worse? Well frankly yes, The AA didnt have the details of the car i was driving on their systems only my old car as i had not told them. I got an old policy where the car is covered, not the driver. Now they were still happy to come to my resue and update details and change my cover but all for the grand price of £146 paid there and then. In disgust i hung up feeling as low as i ever have done. Starting to get dark not knowing what to do and aware of the numerous signs on the road warning cars left would be towed away and impounded I was running out of options.
Then something happened that restored my faith in humanity. One of the Saints fans who helped bump start earllier returned in his car announced with jump leads. Within minutes I was back on the road thanks to the goodwill of a rival football fan. WHat was such a bad day on the whole was made better by the kindness of someone who had no reason to help me. I hope one day i can be of help to someone. Defeat against Walsall and thats it as far as i'm concerned. The fat lady is warming her voice for sure.

Had the car back in time ...but i just couldnt be arsed.....only one of the lads going diect from Reading on the train...so i left it.

Punched the air at 1-1 and turned on the radio...big mistake....just as the dab kicked in...Lambert scored...i turned it off.....and just cringed when the texts came in...

The next three games are going to tell if we go down with a whimper or make a fight of it....

Sadly, I think that's about all we've got left to fight for, and we don't look capable of doing that. Certainly wouldn't want the players to get the message they're playing for pride and self-respect, they've amply demonstrated they have neither

Agree arriba.....just back......for me today was the lowest of the low.

Saints did'nt need to up a gear....our front play was non existant.

Douglas worked hard...at centre half for most of the time.

Ritchie took his goal well..then got took off,not going to diss Wilson because his hands have been tied.

Nice to see Samdy,.....looked trimmer than i last saw him,Fred and Steve H.

Apologies to Donkey....nice to have a beer with you but excuse the rambling.

Good away day but i would swap it all for three points and a cuppa cocoa.

No need to apologise, old boy.  Had a good day until the match started.  Good to meet you and STFCinbnmth.
