Title: Let it Snow......

Apparently snow today tomorrow and Thursday, oh joy will make work a barrel of laughs!

If by snow you mean light drizzle, yes it is (today). Don't worry, I think the worst case is a light dusting.

Unless you are working in another country.

Had a sprinkling in Marlborough earlier on.  It's stretching it to say that it was snowing, but there was some snow in amongst the drizzle!

We have light drizzle here in Swindon. Makes a change :(

I'm still like a 5 year old full of excitement when it snows. Last years was brilliant. I could make the most of it this year what with resting between jobs. If God is a TEF lurker* he'll make it happen.

*and real

I reckon chippenham has the least amount of snow in the country. We're too far west when it comes from the east, too far north with snow from the south, etc etc.

I've never really 'got' snow but then in my life time snow has meant a couple of inches that by the time you're up the cars have driven over it - its just slushy ice.

Last year was ace, we got proper snow and I wasnt working, a mate of mine was supposed to be working in kent but obviously couldnt get there.

We got the slede out for the first time in about 15 years and went up Wanborough.

Fucking Excellent.

Gutted, that we may have more this year and I'll have to work.

I lived in Southsea for 5 years and never saw a frost, let alone snow.

Coming back to Swindon, I'd always notice it was just that bit colder.

I could barely get the car back in to the driveway after taking child #1 to his childminder this morning.  (Need to work out how to take the EPS system off.)  Sliding everywhere.

Nice area i believe.

It's more the latter, I think.  Ambient temperature in London is always a few degress warmer than in the suburbs and further afield...combined effect of 10 million bodies, 3+ million internal combustion engines etc.

I witnessed the most awe inspriring sunset of my life in Brighton a few years back.  Early December, so no haze.  Just a brilliant blue sky, a deep orange sun and air so clear and cold it made your nostrils ache.

The sun pretty much sets in the south that time of year, so it set right over the sea...witnessed by me a several hundred others who had gathered on the beach to watch.  You could pinpoint the split second that the earth's rotation rolled the sun out of view.  Awesome to watch.

I have got the sled out of the back of the garage just in case I am lucky and the kids school is closed. I am looking forward to being able to build a right proper snowman. Are you allowed to use a shovel to start it off or is that cheating??

The question is, how much snow is needed before a day off is warranted?  Last week a few people didn't come in and received disciplinaries!  I've not been there long so still trying to create a good impression, but last time in the snow nearly got wiped out and I've got a rather large excess on my insurance (a legacy of drink driving...)

This is bloody insane. A few inches of snow & the world stops. Well Britain does
My daughter works on the M4 at Leigh Delamere & has been texted by her boss saying don't come in we are closing at 2pm. (Not sure if that is just a bit of it or the whole lot).
In 1982 the snow was a whole lot worse then with the m4 totally blocked for days, but it stayed open.
I vaguely remember the snow in 1963 which had drifts to the top of our back door, & people still went to work (I didn't obviously as I was a kid then).

the reason we struggle to cope with snow/very cold weather is because the infrastructure isn't there to manage everything. it's not necessary in the uk, especially this part of the country.

the roads grind to a halt because people are trying to drive on snow with "summer" tyres and get stuck. even non-studded winter tyres would be fine but nobody would invest in a set as it's way too expensive for the tiny amount of snow we get.

phil - people probably didn't commute as far in 1963 as they do now. there were fewer cars on the road etc... a lot of people now can't get within five miles of their workplace

To be fair to Swindon council, they had men out clearing and gritting roads and pavements in the town centre from quite early this morning.

I went to work this morning, then left after half an hour. Got stuck halfway up a hill on the way home, a policeman pushed the car for me to the top of the hill with me trying to get some grip to the front wheels.....it must have been 200 yards  :)

I was going to make the very same point but couldn't be arsed...I remember 63 quite well.

Cars back then used snow chains...they seem to have become redundant.  Also, because, 50's post war austerity had only just ended people were generally tougher than today.

Wonderful day yesterday.  2 hours to complete a 20 minute journey, several very near misses, and then when I got to work (I work in sales for car insurance) my company in their wisdom had decided to close the claims department due to staffing issues...  Every call I got was some irrate nutjob ranting and raving about how they'd had an accident that wasn't possibly their fault but the snows and how it has to be sorted out right now!  Telling people there was nothing I could do and that they had to sit tight and wait for the weather to improve was difficult without sounding like a complete mong...

Then, I wake up this morning, ready for my four day weekend only to discover I've got really bad man flu...  my lips have blown up to the size of Lesley Ash's...  What does that mean?!

Travelled in to London today after working from home yesterday.  The difference that 35 miles makes is huge.  Practically nothing on the ground here, but still the best part of a foot lying at home.  I don't need to use the car to get to work during the week, but will need to dig it out on Saturday if I want to go anywhere.

I would be surprised if we had seen the last of the disruption.  With so much snow on the ground, any fresh snow fall will settle straight away.  Some of the longer range forecasts are forecasting new snow on Sunday, so will have to keep an eye out for that.

Careful your enthusiasm might go against you, I will give you an example, not saying of course this will happen.

Back in the 70s I travelled from Windsor to Chesham on a motorbike, riding with my feet on the floor all the way, approximately 20 miles up and down hills and I came off twice, it took me over 2 hour for a 7.00am start and I arrived on time.

I was the only one to get in though most of the staff lived in Amersham or Chesham, the directors brought me breakfast and then sent me on my way home and told me not to come to work for a couple of days.

When I returned along with the rest of the staff, my work colleagues hated me and I sat at work for two weeks in total silence. Left the job soon after.

I spent 1½ hours last night - in the dark - clearing snow from our driveway down to the bottom of the cul-de-sac we live in.  I don't use the car to get to work (live a few mins from the station) so no need until today, when we were expecting the cleaners to arrive for the fortnightly house clean.  The road we live in has a few gradients and, during the last few weeks, I've seen estate cars elegantly pirouetting past the house on more than one occasion.

Having shifted (what felt like) a couple of tonnes of snow last night, the cleaners called this morning to say they would not be coming.  I have back ache and I'm not happy.

Probably would have been less work (and cheaper) to clean the house yourself on this occasion ?

Question for any meteorologists out there.  When metcheck.com forecasts that we're going to get approx 7mm of rain falling as snow in the next 24 hours, how deep will the snow lie assuming it all settles (which it probably will at the moment)?

Hammersmith will be fine, no problems - its mainly the west, southern home counties in trouble today. They expect it to turn to sleet/rain by mid afternoon.
Roughly 1'' of snow here in Berkshire and still falling (very fine snow) roads passable, down towards Fleet/Hartley very different picture took my neighbour 2 hours to cover 2 miles earlier this morning, but once into Arborfield and towards Wokingham no problems.

Oh dear, what time was that?

The A332 is about two miles east of Wokingham and four miles east of the Arborfield Road coming into Wokingham, are you talking about the Coppid Beach Roundabout area?
Saw this report on the AA finder.

A322 Bagshot Road Bracknell
both ways between B3430 New Forest Ride and A332 Swinley Road  open affecting all driving lanes
A322 Berkshire - Bagshot Road partially blocked both ways due to ice, accident and snow between Coral Reef Roundabout and A332 Swinley Road , in Bracknell

The met office didn't actually forecast snow last night so unless the gritter men have crystal balls (cue: I've got two of them and neither are made of crystal) I'm not surprised they were in bed.

As far as trying to collect rubbish in this weather, behave yourself. Have you tried controlling a 20 tonne lorry on icy residential streets?

The whole of the south west knew snow was coming last night.

What's wrong with a smaller lorry and more trips, just because what they normally do doesn't work that's no excuse for not doing something.? What happens when the thaw comes, they'll stop half way round the route as they run out of space, then demand overtime for the extra shifts.

Of course . . I forgot they have a fleet of smaller lorries ready in the depot just in case it snows.

As for expecting overtime for having to do extra work, I would too, it's not their fault it snowed.

My mistake with the forecast, certainly wasn't forecast here in London though! Although Samdy has confirmed the gritters were out last night so there!

Dont know about there, but there's very little grit up here, what they have they are conserving in case the temperature really drops, which according to the weather sites is unlikely for a few days.

BBC weather site was saying London from 3am through til midday yesterday, so they were aware.

The met office kindly changed their forecast at about 3am as the snow started to fall, this is less a forecast and more an observation of course.

Depends where you are in the country i suppose but Swindon wsa expecting snow to start falling at 6pm yesterday. That had been predicted for days

The Met were predicted no more than 6 hours of light snow during the evening and overnight. Must have been nearly 3" in West Swindon, personally I wouldn't call that light. In general their forecasts for Swindon have been fucking shit and change dramatically every time they update them.

grit only can so so much in these conditions.the roads have been gritted, and have been continually for the last week or so.i've seen gritters and ploughs out loads of times this week yet the m4 still had settled snow on it.

Have the main roads in the town cleared up yet? Or are they still slippy/slushy?

Not just the men who do the gritters that stayed in bed, but the binmen also.

NB. In most parts of the country you will find that the gritters/binmen are one and the same, which conflicts with my previous opinion that the gritters were the salt of the earth and that the binmen had a rubbish job.

Fuck the lack of grit. I fell over today for the first time since the snow started in december. First step of the bus (which was chock full of people) and BANG. On my backside.

My dad is always bleating on about how it snowed in june 1975, which sounds ridonkulous to me.

Can one of the older generation tell me if this is true?

2 June 1975, The United Kingdom: Snow falls across southern England, including Buxton, Derbyshire and on hills south of Birmingham, Edinburgh, Newark, Grantham and Peterborough. Snow is also observed in Cambridge and Colchester. The snow is the latest in the year that such a widespread snowfall has occurred over the United Kingdom since the late 19th Century.

Yes, I remember that day - the snow made me arrive late for a key final degree exam, so I always blame my crappy 3rd class honours on the weather!

Stupid old people.

It's not just old people. I've seen loads of cars this week where the owner has cleared the windows but not the roof, then brakes and the whole lot from the roof slides down on to the windscreen so they can't see a fucking thing. Idiots.

Our heating has packed up and it's fucking freezing, despite numerous calls to the landlord who is sending his wife (who took the first 2 or 3 calls and seemingly never passed any info on) over tomorrow, no mention of a bloody plumber. I shall kick her in the cunt.

I watched/listened three news programmes this morning for the weather forecast.

They all gave different versions: BBC South - snow high on hills north of M4, rain on lower levels clearing
BBC - snow right down towards the south coast up to 3 inches
Local radio - snow heavy especially in Berkshire clearing by mid afternoon

Talk aabout covering your options: I have to drive down the M3 in about 1 hour and I'm expecting, rain, sleet, heavy snow clearing but settling up to 3 inches.

Thanks

Why do people insist on going 20mph slower widow it starts when visibility isnt affected and it isnt settling? And get out of the middle lane

It seems like most people are incapable of driving in anything other than perfect weather conditions.  People leaving their lights off when it's pissing down/snowing gets my goat - if you use you're wipers you should have your lights on, as the highway code states.

To add to that Walrus, fog lights being on in rain makes my blood boil. They're called fog lights you thick cunts, not rain lights.

Police call them 'Prat Lights' - boy racers put them on - actually an offence if it's not foggy. I had mine on without realising on the A30 in Cornwall at 3.30am & got pulled over - as I was an old git in a family estate - I just got a telling off + it woke me up   ::)  :drive:

Covering of snow in Farnborough this morning.  Not much more than ¼ inch thick, but enough to turn everything white.

Expect it will be gone by mid morning though.
