fair play. not much excuse for councils not doing it though, considering the met office warnings yesterday.
Our council is completely out of grit, not sure it is bad planning just there is none left.

The Health and Safety woman at work went to B&Q to buy rock salt/grit for the car parks yesterday but they had none left as the council had bought it all. Genius. I think.

Bloody Weather. The cold has buggered up the central locking on my car, meaning i have to lock it from the inside and climb out the boot. And the snow means I cant get it to the garage untill saturday at the earleist meaning i have to get the train to work at £50 a pop.

I just got stuck in pizza hut car park, had to be pushed out.
I went to work this morning, then left after half an hour. Got stuck halfway up a hill on the way home, a policeman pushed the car for me to the top of the hill with me trying to get some grip to the front wheels.....it must have been 200 yards

.phil - people probably didn't commute as far in 1963 as they do now. there were fewer cars on the road etc... a lot of people now can't get within five miles of their workplace
I was going to make the very same point but couldn't be arsed...I remember 63 quite well. Cars back then used snow chains...they seem to have become redundant. Also, because, 50's post war austerity had only just ended people were generally tougher than today. Not many houses had central heating, lads still wore short trousers, and double glazing was unheard of.

We didn't have central heating either. I fire in the living room & a Rayburn in the kitchen. I reember scraping ice off of the inside of the bathroom window. (We did have an inside loo though even that froze up)
As a kid though it was great. Huge snow drifts to play in on the way to & from school & it seemed to last for weeks

End of December into March...I thought it was always going to be like this in England. Never seen anything like it since.

Tomorrow will be worse. Roads are already freezing over and my traction control was going mental. If you go sensibly it isn't a problem. I expect a few accidents on the road in the morning
