My first game was at home to Shrewsbury in April 76, i was 8 and Don Rogers was playing that day (one of the few games he played after he returned).

I really can't remember much about the game itself, i went with my uncle and grandad, my uncle worked for the council as an electrician and dropped us off in his transit near the ground so my grandad could buy his cigarettes on the way, and the smell in the Arkells of cigars/cigarettes is something i remember more than the match, that and the sweets i got given...

Whenever i smell that particular brand my grandad smoked even now it takes me back to those days....

Living away, the next match i got taken to was the 6-0 home win against Lincoln in March 79, i was 11 then and can remember that more clearly.

1968 Swindon 2 Bristol Rovers 2

Had no particular affiliation to either team as I lived smack in the middle in Chippenham at the time.

Can't really remember why I chose Swindon over the Robots - but with what was to come the following year, boy did I make the right choice

Mine was Swindon against Stoke in 1997. Went for my 7th birthday, sat in the town end which was the family bit at that time. I think peter thorne scored and someone got sent off. I spent most of the match mimicking the linesman.

My Dad tells me it was in 1989. Most likely the 89/90 season, I would only have been 3 years old.

No idea who the opponents were. My only memory is of playing with the seats, which is what I did for most of the game so I'm told.

I think we had to leave because it was too loud as well  :toocool:

My first game was Jimmy Allen's testimonial vs Chelsea in 1986.
Think Chelsea won 4-0 but I aint 100% sure? Was 11 years old and went with a mate and his dad. Stood on the shrivvy road at the front on the half way line.

In May 1986 Town lost 3-2 to Chelsea in a Testimonial, I guess it'll be that one.

Fuck knows why i thought it was 4-0?
First game i saw at the county ground was an England u21 match vs Italy prior to the Chelsea testimonial.
 England lost 1-2 i think?

Until recently I thought my first game was in 76 against Peterborough but it was in 74 when I was 8 against Peterborough so my sister informs me.

I remember very little about it now but apparently our team that day was Barron, Dixon, Trollope, Hubbard, Burrows, Prophett, Moss, McLauglin, Eastoe, Butler, Anderson, Sub Jenkins.

A 1-0 defeat with 9,023 there.

The occassion passed me by apart from recalling some crowd trouble after the game which was pretty much the norm around the mid 70s so I seem to remember.

My first ever game was the wembley final against leicester i can remember crying when the fourth goal went in as the noise was tremendous and i was only 4ish haha i remember my dad getting up and leaving for the toilets when it was 3-3 and remember bodin scoring the penalty.

My first Premiership game that i can remember was a home game against wimbledon we lost 4-2 (i was in the stratton bank end)   http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/MatchCentre.asp?Tab=Video&MatchID=19940139

I remember Vinnie Jones jumping up on top of the building were they clean the kits. think i was about 5-6.

Been to about 85% of home games ever since and have sat in every stand as ive gotten older.

My first league game was at home to port vale in the old first division Fjortoft scored the first at the town end with a volley, Keith Scott scored the second at the stratton bank end with a header in the last few minutes,

Well, that was an eye-opener. It now seems that my first game was against Bristol Rovers but not the 2-2 draw in 1969 but the previous season which was 4-1.

This, of course, probably explains why I chose Swindon over Brizzle!

I can't remember my first game.

I can remember going to the Scunthorpe game in the FA Cup, and watching Trevor Francis play for Birmingham, booing John Galley at Ashton Gate & watching the Anglo Italian games at the CG (especially the Sampdoria game).

But I had been to games before these, I specifically remember one game when we sat on the benches that used to be in front of the old Shrivvy Road stand but have no clue who it was against.

Crystal Palace 2-1 Swindon Town

I started off with an away game at Selhurst Park. I'm dying to see footage of this game because we took the lead in the first half through Steve Foley right in front of all the Palace fans... which for some reason my old man decided to position himself, me and my mate. There's got to be footage of three random people celebrating amongst the home fans when Foley tapped home. In other news, I hate Mark Bright.

My first game was a 1-0 home defeat to Bristol City, early in September 1990.

http://swindon-town-fc.co.uk/MatchCentre.asp?MatchID=19910103

I went on my own.  I was 17 and had passed my driving test a couple of weeks before.  Got my Dad to lend me his car keys.  It would have been one of the first trips I made solo, so even the epic journey to the ground from West Swindon was a bit of an adventure.

Even though I'd not been to a game - I didn't know anyone who went regularly -  I'd been 'following' the club for a while, watching out for results in the paper etc.  And that summer, the promotion/financial irregularities/demotion/reinstatement to Division 2 saga (and the fact that it put STFC in the local and national news on a daily basis) got me properly fired up.  By the time I set foot on the Stratton Bank for the first time, I think I had been hooked for a while.

I remember a few things about the game.  The pitch looked very green, and Junior Bent got their winner after a run down one of the wings about 10 minutes from the end.  I bought a match programme that game, as I have every game I've been to since.  And Julian Wilson (ex-BBC horseracing correspondent and Town fan) had a piece in there titled something along the lines of 'Would you let your daughter marry a Bristol City fan?'  Both my brothers, then aged 11 & 7, started coming along with me a month or two later.  We're all still there.

I don't recall too much about the game really, but did go to a few games in the league cup run that season including the semi final at home to Bolton. My first away game was WBA away in 96/97, we won 2-1 and I scored the winner (look it up for those who know me!). Late 80's ('88 or '89) away against West Ham in the FA Cup replay. I had moved to Swindon the year before and only went to the game as my mate was a Hammer. Didn't go again until the following season, when Ossie was appointed and from then on (Apart from an enforced absence in the late 90's and early noughties) I've been pretty much a regular.

I also went to the Blackburn game in the next round, and up until recently I thought I had a clear memory of Blackburn's winning goal... that was until I saw the highlights from a game in the early 90's against Blackburn and I realised that was the game I had been remembering!!

First real memories I have are being embarrassed at losing to Dagenham the following season, and beating Sheffield Wednesday - we used to sit up in the old wooden seats on the Shrivenham Road -remember being scared shitless walking up the rickety steps to get in, and an old couple in front of me offering me some of their soup from a flask at half time. I also vaguely remember a friendly against Man Utd, standing on the centre circle after we won promotion against Chester, and the Jimmy Allan testimonial.

He had just had his 3rd birthday, the best thing is that he is now 16 & is still coming to games with us :)

My parents weren't interested in football and I was ten when the local garage owner from my village near Newbury took me in 1966 (pre world cup) to a Division Three home game v Southend Utd.

Although I had been to the odd game before with my grandfather at Tottenham I never identified myself with them and I remember the thrill of my first glimpse of the County Ground turf after climbing the steps of the rickety, corrugated Southside Stand.

The Don scored two early goals in a 4-0 home win and my footballing hero and football club have never changed since.

England won the World Cup that summer and Town humbled Hurst, Moore and Peters in the FA Cup the very next season and won the League Cup not so long after.

All very easy for a gloryhunter like me till that fat slob Dave MacK*** (whom I had admired at Tottenham) put his nose in here getting rid of Harland and Rogers...but that, like countless others, is another story

What a season......pity it died towards the end. After being knocked out of both cups the Town slumped and the slide continued into the next couple of seasons - ending in relegation to Division 4 for (I think) the first time ever. Things weren't to pick up again until the arrival of Lou.

At the start of 90-91 they gave the town end to the away supporters, i can't remember for how long but one which sticks in my mind is September 1990 when Middlesborough had the Town End. That was after they had made it seated in the summer, not sure what the thinking on that was at the time....

I know my dad took me to see us play Notts County, his team, in the late '50s so by looking at this wonderful site I can see it had to be October 4th 1958. 3 - 1 win, just before Bert's babes came in en masse. I was 7 and remember nowt about it.

I see John Sheridan played for County - a couple of seasons later he broke Terry Woollen's leg and was sent off, effectively ending Terry's career.

during th 97/98 season they moved the family section from the Town End to where the away supporters are now. And away supporters had the Town End for a few games.

I remember the first game the family section was in the away section of the arkells stand...because we had a perfect view of George Ndahs backwards scissor kick goal v Sheffield United. Same game Scott  Leitch nearly scored a half volley from near the halfway line

One of the few (only?) times I've been in tears at a football match. Firstly having the visit to Wembley snatched away with that last minute equaliser from Burnley, then when the final whistle went and the realisation that we'd made it.

In a way my favourite game ever, with that anticipation of what was to come.

It was a decent game, both doing well in the league (may have even been first vs. second).

The goalkeeper got a good hand on Finney's penalty, it trickled over the line without hitting the net. That final point may just be my memory getting carried away.

The first game I can really remember was a 1-0 win over Wolves in Setember 1990, the away fans were given the town end after seats were put in that preseason, we stood in the wedge part of the bank where the away fans would stand in the future, and due to the number of Wolves fans we were moved to the north stand. After that game I think it went back to being home fans only.

Think it was shortly after the league cup win and on the run to promotion.
My dad used to go to all the home games in those days standing on Stratton Bank but bought seats near touchline on north side - was pre new north stand and my memory was we sat on wooden benches but could be wrong!
Dad stopped going during fuel crisis which coincided with us being shit 1974? but got me hooked for life.

Yep.  I think we also played Real Sociedad around the same time.

In the preseason before 91-92 I seem to remember, I think we lost 2-1, we  all thought we would see John Aldridge, but he signed for Tranmere just before, so still saw him just not in that game

If I recall that was 1-0 to Swindon and was on Match of the Day.

I also went to that match and my first Swindon game was at home vs Sheffield Wednesday 75/76 season and we won 2-1 Anderson and Eastoe the scorers.

Possibly the shortest MotD feature in history...the match was so dire, the highlights consisted of The Prof heading in in the 89th minute.

That was one of my favourite games for Swindon, it was chucking it down all game with puddles all over the pitch and we had 3 shots cleared off the line that game when the ball (well past the keeper) stopped in the mud and puddles on the goal line.

Lincoln were awful that day with Peter Grotier the bearded and hugely plump keeper for Lincoln one of the worst I have ever seen at the CG.

Could easily have ended 10-0 or 11-0 that day, I don't think Lincoln crossed into our half for pretty much the whole game and the only player of any not playing for them was Glenn Cockerill who was later to sign for us.

Your first game, Reg?

Recall is a bit hazy....the first game I can clearly remember, was a reserve fixture in 62, v Birmingham. For some reason, probably a postponement, quite a few of the first team were fielded, including the very young Don Rogers. Birmingham were top flight opposition, but we mullered them 4-2....Rogers showing evidence of what was to come. The crowd 5,494.

One of the pleasures for a young lad back then, was that you could stand behind the Bank goal for one half and the TE goal for the other half.

I think that was the previous season when we lost 4-2. Looking at this great results website it sez the Don was a sub in the 6-2 defeat....I lived a bus ride away from Palace at the time and saw both games but admit I thought Don played in both. This wasn't a bad Town team, finished 4th, ahead of Palace.

Chippenham away was Macaris first ever game, Chippenham made him very welcome with banners all round the ground welcoming him and we arrived in a mini bus :D the Man U game (which finished 4-1) was a good one they had a fair few stars playing IIRC such as Blackmore, Hogg and Whiteside and Mark Dempsey scored for them who later that season came to us on loan.

Swindon v West Ham 28th Jan 1975 in one of the Cups. 27,000 crowd but lost 1-2. I was only 12 at the time and the first thing I witnessed was some Laaaaandan Geezer wearing platform shoes the size of my head, scarf on each wrist and stripey socks come head first crashing over the barrier of the terracing under the south stand with a couple of coppers in tow. Helmets everywhere.
I was hooked for life.

Probably as one of the older TEF readers -my first game was on 11th February 1956 versus Coventry City, drew 1-1! Sat on the benches in front of the very old Shrivvy Road stand (pre the Aldershot tattoo one!) with Michael "Tubby" Rowe as it was his birthday. Was hooked from then on in and saw some absolute dire rubbish in the 50's until Bert Head came along and got us up and running in the early 60's. Got to say I have probably gone through every emotion there is where the Town are concerned over the years, but when anyone asks me who I support my reply is Swindon Town and England in that order!

First game was home against Arsenal December 27 1993, but we missed most of the first half.

There is a bit of a story behind the first match; so here it is:

I had just turned 18 and my parents allowed me to travel abroad alone for the first time.  I travelled with 3 childhood friends (2 of them are Bristol City supporters), an other BCFC supporter and Norwayred who ran the Scandinavian supporter's club at that time and who I never had met before.

We flew to London on boxing day and spent the first night there.  The tickets for the match should have been arranged by a Norwegian football travel agency and should be at the hotel in Bristol (democracy sucks and we lost 2-4 on the voting Swindon/Bristol).  We overslept ourself for the morning train and the next one was cancelled.  The tickets weren't at the hotel and there was delays on the train from Bristol to Swindon.  We arrived in Swindon 20 min into the game and ran to the ground without any tickets.  Norwayred had been in contact with the club secretary before we left Norway, so we asked somebody at the ground for him in Norwenglish.  After what felt like ages, he came out and guided us to the seats where the reserves and other staff are sitting.

I should also mention that none tickets arrived for the next matches, but the club allowed us to sit at the same place for the Chelsea match, where we presented the 'Scandinavian supporter's player of the year' award to Paul Bodin some minutes before the kick-off and the club got us tickets for the game away against Coventry and we rode the buses for free.  After the match, we arried in Swindon too late for the last train back to Bristol, but the wonderful lady who was our guide in the bus, arranged a free ride for us by one of her friends.

Got to love a club that does all this for foreign supporters!

Hello all.... Long time lurker, first time poster...

First Town game I went to see was this one.

http://www.swindon-town-fc.co.uk/MatchCentre.asp?MatchID=19970140

I was living in Norfolk at the time, so knew a bit about the Norwich team, and before the game told my mate that we'd have to watch out for Darren Eadie and that he was a bit handy. He was pretty much the difference between the sides that day, creating one and scoring two.

Not a good start to my Town watching.

That was a dire end to that season.  The Norwich game seems to be the first of a run of 5 in which Phil King displaced Drysdale from the side.  During that run, we conceded 14 and scored 1; with Drysdale returning for the last few games.  Phil eventually moved on in 1999, but never played for us again.

I believe our only defeat at home that season...Watford went on to pip us to the title on goal average.

As far as I remember, for us to finish as champions on goal average, Watford needed to lose their last game 0-3 and we needed to win 3-0. They duly did their bit but we won just 2-0, with Rogers heading (YES HEADING) just over the bar which would have made it 3-0. My memory tells me I was stood behind the Town End goal.

Just checked the league table for that year, seems my memory had a senior moment. 0-5 and 5-0 would have done it. I stand by the Rogers header though, and that there were 29,000 in the ground for that Watford match.

At least we stayed in the league that season.

The next time I saw them play Norwich, we'd already been relegated, although we won and Hay scored 2

Can't remember whether it was my first, but the first game I can properly remember was 6-0 vs Stoke at the CG. Can remember the Stoke fans doing the conga on the Bank in the pissing rain! Must have been 1989.

Also Blackburn the same season, when it was so foggy you couldn't see the other side of the pitch from the North Stand.

The scum 4-2 away also sticks out, but that might have been the season after.

Missing the first half hour/the first half because a delay at the train station in Bristol. We went to the front office and presented us self as we had been in touch with the club about visiting from Norway.

Don't remember if it was Jon Pollard or another bloke who guided us through the player tunnel and we got to sit above the bench in the section where the injured player and youth team were seated.

Yeah, that must have been the 102 point season. We seemed to grind out a load of 2-1 wins that season (feels like about 20 but if I look it up it will probably be 3). As you say we just wore teams down.

Edit: It was only 6. We did have 8 1-0's as well though. 14 one goal victories - that looks like a pretty high number to me :hmmm:

It does feel like that! having checked we won 17 games by a single goal and we won 7 games 2-1(8 if you count cup games), one game I remember well was away at Rochdale when we were 1-0 down till the last 10 mins then we scored 2 goals in quick succession to win 2-1. Looking back though it seems like most of the season was like that, happy days :)

The 'Milk Cup' run..

Sunderland 3-2
Sheffield Wednesday 1-0

Still two of my greatest games of all time from that season.

The sad thing about those games is that I don't think there is any footage of them whatsoever because there was a complete TV blackout that season. Mind boggling to think of that these days.

I can't remember off the top of my head how many we took on a chilly Tuesday evening but it must have been almost half the 12,000 crowd.

I remember we took 60+ coaches to the game and it was the best atmosphere at any Swindon away game I have ever been to in nearly 40 years.

Sheffield United home 1987

two nil, two goals from Jimmy Quinn I think - the second was a free kick from inside the penalty box after the keeper held it for more than five seconds! the entire Sheff utd team lined up on the goal line and Quinn blasted it into the net. Got me hooked for life the bastard!

I believe this was the first home game back in the old second division after the 'rise and rise' as I remember signs on the pitch beforehand saying welcome back to div 2!

Ahhh the glory years  :beers:

They were picking off smaller groups of Swindon coming away from the ground, we bumped into some Rovers supporters we knew and walked up the road with them, probably stopped us from getting a kicking to be honest.

Interestingly, what were TEF members first away games?

I remember the first three I went to we won!

WBA away 96/97 won 2-1. Alison and Smith scored.
Followed that ip the following season with Chris Hay scoring the winner at Elm Park to win 1-0 v Reading and then beat Stoke 2-1 in the first league game at the Britannia. Alison and Hay scored two in a couple of minutes late on.

It all went down hill after that!

My first away match was memorable for so many reasons. It was a 4th Round League cup tie at Wimbledon in the 79-80 season which we won 2-1 with a very late winner bundled home by Chic Bates I think. The experience was also enhanced by being a 14 year old kid with his mates doing a first trip to London without adult supervision (a fine apprenticeship for the next 2 unsupervised trips to Arsenal & Wolves during the rest of that cup run). It was also my first memory of being lifted off my feet in a crowd crush trying to leave the ground. About 2500 people trying to funnel through a narrow exit onto the street with police outside slowing down the crowd dispersal hence the crush.

I remember going on the Football Special to that one...proper trip. The thing set off, in what seeemed completely the wrong direction, certainly picked up in Chippenham, and may even have got as far west as Bath before looping back round to Westbury, Warminster and into the spider's web of suburban London commuter lines via Basingstoke and Woking.

Also remember loads of spotty 14 yeard olds puking up left right and centre having had a shandy or 2 too many.

First away game for me was Forest away in the FA cup in 78, massive Town following and a poor 4-1 defeat to a Cloughie team in the middle of a brilliant run of 42 undefeated in the league at the time, a Forest team that won the League that year.

The Forest team was
Shilton, Anderson, Barrett, McGovern, Needham, Burns, O'Neill, Gemmill, Withe, Woodcock, Robertson.

We had no chance TBH but a great day out none the less.

First game my Dad took me to was Swindon Reserves 1 Southport 2 in 1968 (I think). Can't remember much about that day except for:

1. jumping onto the pitch perimeter to retrieve a ball that went out of play (because you could in those days), and
2. changing the score in the Football Pink to 3-2 and magically expecting us to move up the table (in my defence I was 7 at the time).

Moved to Australia shortly after beating Arsenal at Wembley and it took me until 1986 to get back to the County Ground, just in time to see Swindon 2 Blackpool 6. Did, at that point, think I was a bad luck charm but happy to say that I have seen Swindon win many times since then.

Hoping to get back for a holiday next season but will need to wait for the new season's fixtures to come out so that I plan it around when we are at home (preferably a Saturday/Tuesday arrangement).

Swindon 1 Sheff Wed 0 1972 Frank Burrows scored. All I can really remember is wondering why the mustachioed winger had to take all the corners from both sides. Went with my neighbour and his son, and neighbours brother and his 2 sons. Think they had about 4 season tickets and smuggled at least 2 of us in somehow in the seats in the old shrivvy road. You had to go up a real rickety old stair case to get up there.

Next game was a night game v Burnley - stood on the Stratton bank seem to remember no segregation between home and away fans but what really stuck with me as a 8 year old kid was the vivid green of the pitch and the bright white floodlights as you first entered the terrace. That image still gives tingle of anticipation for night games even now.

I have only a very vague recollection of the game, but I think my first time was when my dad took me to a testimonial match at the CG when Stanley Matthews was playing in the other team, possibly an All-Star selection. It would have been in the mid to late fifties. I stood on the boards, Stratton Bank, just to the right behind the goal. I watched the Maurice Owen generation and later teams from that spot, moving later to watch Bert Head's Babes from around the half-way line, standing at the front of what became the North Stand (called "The Enclosure" I think) . Then to the back of the Town End in the late sixties.  Happy Days...

First away game was at Crystal Palace, traveling there with my dad and a few of his friends in a Vauxhall Cresta estate, owned by Bill O'Connel. He ran a shop in Swindon Road, Stratton, which later became Sleeman's. I think we lost 4-1.

I can't remember my first Town game, apart from by using the method of looking at the results and thinking I must have been at that one. So, 1960-61 is the best bet, the days of Arnold Darcy dancing down the wing, Bronco Layne preparing to spend time with his lawyer, and of course Ernie Hunt's barrell chest, Woodruffs throw ins, and Mike Summerbee's nose.

At a guess then, the first game was Lincoln City at home on 30th September 1960. We won 4-0.
Later I enjoyed watching players like the vertically challenged goalie Tony Hicks taking time off from his love affair with pints of Guinness :pint: to crouch between the sticks, Keith East who we saw score 9 goals in a week, Frank "ten past" Haffey and our best ever player, Ron Dodgers. EVERY time Don got the ball, a collective aaaaaaahhhhhhh reverberated around the ground

But the first game I can really remember going to was at Leyton Orient on 28 March 1964, proudly wearing my new Donkey Jacket. The Kinks "All Day and all of the Night" blaring out of the coffee bars juke-boxes on Leyton High Street. Can't remember the fucking game, though the statistics say we lost 2-1

Swindon 2 Blackpool 6

Stood on the Town End, what a terrible but realistic way to realise life as a Town fan !

Wasnt that the game where Alan Mayes ran the show for Blackpool ? I remember standing in the Shrivenham Road stand with my dad, he was applauding Mayes, when just about everyone else was ready to kick off. First time I remember being a little bit scared at a match  :-[

They had a stocky winger called Mark Taylor, who tore us a new one that night, I thought he'd go on to be a decent player, but after a couple of successful seasons with the Tangerines he got injured, missed a season and a half and was never the same again. The one who did go on was Paul Stewart, he got one on the night....went on to Spurs and played for England.

3 players never played for Macari again after that night.....Kenny Allen, David Cole, stalwarts of the Div 4 champions, and Lingy who'd arrived in the summer.

Early '83. Port Vale at home. Won 1-0. They wore yellow. Never seen so many people in one place. 5 years old, just turning 6. I chose my team for life on that day. Every time I go in the NS, my nostrils are still filled with smell of cigars despite it being non-smoking for  20 odd years.

There used to be an old boy in the arkells, the cigar he smoked would last the whole game. damn thing must have been a foot long before he sparked it.

Mine was in the 2004/05 season vs Bradford at home. Can't really remember anything about that game, I think I went to a few with my uncle that season :D, but my earliest memories of watching Swindon was in the 2005/06 season when we got relegated.

I'd forgotten about Ling's first spell at the club and didn't realise he'd played in that game. What I remember about the game was that when the 3rd or 4th Blackpool goal went in a few fans started booing and singing "what a load of rubbish" and they were quickly shouted down - the Town End then started up with "Lou Macari's red and white army" and it went on for practically the rest of the match. The Town players noticeably raised their game and made a fight of it.....and it seemed to kick the season. After a slow start to the season we never looked back from then on.....or that's how I remember it anyway. Then again maybe the tears have blurred the memories a little bit....... I remember Mayes scoring at the Town End though.

I remember Harry Lunn used to have a shop in Commercial Road, quite near the market...I was never sure what he actually sold...but in those post war days of proper austerity probably not a lot.

A mate showed me an early 50's ration book last night, that had belonged to his grandparents....the authorities were very pleased to announce in 1951, that the Empire had managed to provide us with sufficient sugar, that there was now a small surplus which could be used to raise some $ (US dollars).

Much to the fore on the ration book, was Tate and Lyle's Mr Cube.....who brandishing his sword of free enterprise, and shield to ward off the threats of Attlee's nationalisation.

My first game came before we moved into the area (Faringdon) - we went with the family we knew in town.
I'd have to guess something like 1960/1.

Stood on Shrivvy Road stand SB end. For years I always thought I'd seen us beat Bristle Shitty [topical note ahoy !] 4-3
but I've looked up all the records and can find no hint of anything remotely like that (!)

Is that worse than remembering nothing about your first game ?!

Very, very similar to me albeit 10 years earlier.

First game Nov '98 2-0 win vs Palace- caught the bug
First away game we lost by 1 goal in West London too; 0-1 vs Fulham in October '99.

Edit: Age 6 also.

That game was shite....it was around the time that Macari was often not around on match days, so the rumour mill about his liking for a punt, went into overdrive....there were even the usual mongs who thought he should be sacked, as back to back promotions weren't good enough for them.

August 1978 - League Cup game against Portsmouth which the Town won 4-2.  If I recall correctly, there were some escapees from the Town End who ran the length of the pitch to confront the Pompey fans on the Stratton Bank before the kick-off.  There was a bit of a scrap on the pitch before everyone went back to their respective end and the game started.  Hooked from that day forward!

My first game was a cup match against Pompey too,but it was in 1977 and we won 4-3.

My old man hated football so a neighbour took me. We stood in the Southside terrace, and I went down the front with all the other nippers,I would've been 7 at the time.
I'll never forget that feeling walking into the ground under floodlights, and the smell of frying onions and pipe smoke.

The thing that caught my attention the most was the chant of "Sa - win -don",which my family, who don't hail  from Swindon, found hilarious when I told them later.
My mum still takes the piss today, asking how 'Sa win don' got on

That,and the amount of violence!
I couldn't believe the sight  grown men beating the shit out of each other on the pitch just yards in front of me,as Elkie Brooks' "Pearl's a singer" gently played over the Tannoy system.
One bloke even leap frogged over me to get on the pitch and smack someone.
Yet everything around me seemed to carry on as normal, like no one had noticed the ongoing spectacle.
The  Announcer wittered  away and old boys checked their programmes like nothing had happened.

One Swindon fan that was dragged off by Police, was black, and I remember being shocked at the amount of racist abuse he received.
Even the guy I was with shouted "Get back to the jungle".

As for the game itself, all I remember is Chris Kamara scored and became my instant favourite player.
And I had change out of 50p!

And I've been suffering ever since..

 :D

We haven't lost at home in a league game to Cov since 1960. In the 64/65 relegation season we beat them 4-1 at the CG, with The Don getting a brace.

Not as memorable as the Cobblers game a couple of weeks later when we came back from 0-2 at HT to win 4-2.

"Go get a proper job"  :)

I worked at the club for 3 years but then left to get a "proper job" ;) but stayed on as a steward from 88 till 99, the training was a 3 hour session on a summer Sunday morning hosted by the police that basically told you what you could do and how to take down someone attacking you with a bottle. It was good fun!

I already had a part time job as a night club bouncer at the Brunel Rooms at the time so knew what to do so it was piss easy.

I got paid £25 per game and at that time the price of a ticket was £10 and I would have gone anyway so I was £35 up per game!

The only times I ever felt threatened by any away fan (I am a pretty big lump and most away fans never argued with me anyway) was Cardiff in the FA cup in 95 and against Millwall in the LC QF of 95.

Millwall brought "spotters" who were supposed to go in and eject the known trouble and all they did was "hes banned" "hes a trouble maker" and they did nothing, the Police told us not to go into the crowd and eject any fans unless we had backup from them....we had no backup! and there was a lot of trouble inside the ground, horrible thugs both those sets of fans.

Good insight there PV, thanks.

Remember both games well.
Cardiff was a nasty one, particularly after the game.

Also recall the stewards legging it along with everyone else after an early season Leicester pitch invasion late 80's / early 90's.

I don't remember that at all, could have been one game I missed, but doesn't ring a bell at all.

The only pitch invasion I do remember was Lids fans invading the pitch at the end of the Premier season and running towards the Town End where I was steward but they were actually non threatening and pretty well behaved set of fans.

The Leicester one was when a steward got clumped, a few of em got on the pitch and didn't do much. It was 0-0 with a 13k crowd, think it was first game of the season in 92?

 :D

I think I remember that game.  It was shortly after Kammy had signed for us from Pompey.  On the pitch it was a helluva battle and Kammy was everywhere, especially with his sliding tackles.  Racist chanting was of course, sadly, common in those days.  I recall having been especially shocked to hear monkey chants directed at Kammy that night by the Pompey fans as I had thought he would be one of those players they still loved.  I have always hated all racist behaviour but, looking back, it is a strange sensitivity that I should have felt Kammy somehow had something about him that made it shocking that HE should be abused. Regardless, Kammy became a new hero for me too right up to the time he ended his Swindon career (and acquired a criminal conviction) by breaking the nose of Jim Melrose, the Shrew who had been racially abusing him.

I think the Leicester thing was a bit half hearted. Quite a few got on the pitch and ran across to the Shrivvy. Looked a bit threatening at first but a few at the front of the Shrivvy got on the pitch and swung at them. A few more at the front of the Shrivvy had a bit of a scuffle and the Leicester fans just walked off. Not many Swindon ran away because you couldn't with the crowd - probably did us a favour actually. The stewards ran faster than the Leicester fans.

Yeah, a few stood their ground in the Shrivvy to trade with the invaders.
I stood on the Bank in those days and it was still possible to leave at the end via the side of the pitch.
Had to move a but sharpish when some of their lot moved towards us.
Remember one town fan picking up an advertising hoarding for self defence, just in case.

I think Leicester did the same at their next away game as well.
A far cry from today's sanitised atmosphere & cardboard clappers in the PL.

Swindon 0-0 Norwich - pre season friendly 1995/96 season i think. Night game.

I was 7. Remember Bryan Gunn being in goal for them and being scared thinking he actually had a gun. Could barely see the game as there was a big bloke in front of me.

Peter Thorne got man of the match. Saw him leaving the stadium after the game and called his name out. He turned round and smiled at me.

Love for this cluster fuck of a club was born.

Didn't start going regularly until the 03/04 play off season when I could go with mates as my dad's a Man City fan!

If I remember correctly they already knew we were fucked regarding the incoming penalty for irregular payments. They had placards showing it.
The following season I think Spurs and maybe Chelsea were caught for the same offence but only fined. Hence the hatred for Ken Bates as he was chair of the league I  think could be wrong though.

The Old Den was interesting - an “old school football ground”.  I went a couple of times - the highlight was a 3-2 FA cup win in the early 1980s with Jimmy Quinn scoring  a brilliant long range winning goal if my memory is accurate.

Remember Terry Gibson scoring his one and only Swindon goal at the Old Den
