TBF to Hodgson, he was clearly trying something out, seeing if Jones could work as a holding mid, in a friendly. It didn't work, lesson learned, glad we didn't try it in a fixture that had something riding on it. That's what friendlies are for. And that's quite a bit different from Jones being picked ahead of Carrick for that role.
Still a terrible decision however you want to dress it up, not least because it exposed poor young Phil to what we might call the Tony Adams treatment...namely a player whose virtues fit very well into the domestic game, but not into the international game....as has been remarked elsewhere, you can get players like Welbeck and Townsend, for whom it is the other way around.
Woy should be looking at his back line, as that's where the problem lies...far better to see if Jones can fit in there.
