Title: Carlisle vs Swindon Matchday Thread
Post by: Ardiles on Saturday, September 4, 2010, 07:37:25
I haven't started one of these in a while, so maybe we're due our first league win today.  I'll predict a nervy 2-1 win.  Charlie and Vince to score, and Sutton to arrive hammered in Carlisle after drinking the buffet car dry.

On a very busy 0830 train from Euston. Think 1-1 with Vince putting us ahead.

tough game today.  normally a draw would be a good result  but I think we need a win to  keep the momentum.  however I have got up in a bad mood, a  loss is predicted. 3 1

I'm not as confident as I was against the Saints, but I don't think we'll lose today.

1-1 or a 1-0 win. Pericard!

Tough game this. We could really do with a first league win to carry on the momentum from Tuesday, but i would be happy with a draw.

Was gonna go, but thought better of it!

Abott's really done quite a goodf job over the summer, assembled a squad of decent players for next to nothing. The recent addition of Michalik will be a bonus for them, he is a tank!

But i'm confident we can win it, and condemn them to their first defeat of the season. 2-1 Swindon win, Austin brace with a late Zoko consolation.

The loss of Harte will be a blow to them...suprising move to Reading.
If we can get an early goal we could sneak it...they are not prolific scorers but Abott has done wonders with them....like him as a manager.
Come on Town.

I wonder who Wilson is going to plump for.  After Peri's showing on Tuesday it'd be harsh not to start him, but with Dossevi declining Togo's call-up maybe Wilson may feel obliged to start with Dossevi up top.  Personally, I'd love to see big Vince get his chance.  I thought he showed some great touches at MK and looked almost dangerous when he came on.

Still, I can't see a Swindon win today, though we really need to start getting points on the board.  3-1 Carlyle.

Comfortable Swindon win. 3-1 town. Ferry and Pericard to start please. Pericard scores first from just inside the box into bottom left after a mix-up between the defender and keeper.

F##k off, Baz.  My thread starting initiative was a stroke of genius.  I have an unsulied record and, if we get our first three points of the season this afternoon, you'll be begging me to start this thread every week.

Not sure what to expect from this game. We have a bit more confidence now hopefully but Carlisle have started well and espeically on their own patch look a very good side. It'll be interesting to see what Wilson starts with. Will he go with the diamond perhaps and play JD at the defence point with Prutton and Ferry in the middle and JP as the AM? Or will he go for the 4-4-2. I'd like to think Vince will start this one after Tuesday night and going back to one of his former clubs he'll want to impress.

Fully agree Luci, but I then remember the penalty Hartlepool got at the CG a few seasons back in the last minute, when the only person who thought it was a pen was the ref, and that included the Hartlepool players, and in the end that pen kept them up that season.

After the start we've had, two tough away games and two clean sheets this week, sounds like we had a fair few chances second half as well. For me that's progress and something to build on. With this side I have no doubt the goals will come most days, more important to see the defence tightening up for me.

For the fact most of us have moaned about the defence and not getting in an experienced centre back, two clean sheets away from home is fantastic and hopefully that can continue.

The last two results can form the foundations of something better.

It must have been absolutely dire to be worse than last week. Last wek was 100% shiteness.

I would of thought however that a point gained away at Carlisle and a clean sheet as well is more positive than the debacle I witnessed at mk.

Title: Re: Carlisle vs Swindon Matchday Thread
Post by: joteddyred on Saturday, September 4, 2010, 16:49:20
Another clean sheet away from home is obviously a good thing, but it's only completely worthwhile if we score down the other end.  Maybe a point would have been taken by most of us before the game, but I thought we would use the momentum from Tuesday night and push on and get the first win.  The worrying thing for me is that the teams we've dropped points against so far are teams we were beating last season.  We haven't come against any of the so called tougher sides in the league yet!

I don't feel as confident as some about next Saturday either.  Southampton will be trying to end a bad run themselves and have definitely got something to prove against us.  I honestly think if we don't pick up 3 points next week, Wilson's position might be under threat, which will be a real shame.  However 3 points out of 15 against some of the teams we'e played is clearly not good enough.

Sonicyouth to start the matchday thread please, as he's been our only matchwinner so far?!

right back in keswick, tea digested.....

bit of a stalemate really, no one really took the game by the scruff of the neck, however we should have won. Austin should have had a hat trick and the miss at the end was bloody awful.

Back 4 looked ok, in fact everyone played ok, the only person who was a slight let down was douglas. Everyone played ok but no one played well.

we finished the stronger, carlisle had a lot of possesion and 11 corners in the second half but they were never a threat, the closest opportunity was a scuffed clearence from a cross from morrisson and lucas made a fantastic reflex save from it.

we should have had 3 points but a point away at carlisle is no bad thing.

That's the trouble with listening to it on the radio, you have no idea if a player looks tired or not and question things that actually you have no idea of. I'm glad the reasons were genuine and not inline with any TEF speculation.

Title: Re: Carlisle vs Swindon Matchday Thread
Post by: Hitchinred on Saturday, September 4, 2010, 18:18:17
Watching the game today the most worrying thing was the form of Douglas. Although winning more than his fair share of headers in midfield he gave the ball away too many times when doing the simple things. I would have Morrison as MOTM which again concerns as it seems it's the defence that have been picking up that accolade which suggests we're under pressure too much. Didn't think at anytime that Carlisle looked likely to score but neither did we until the end. On the plus side both Kennedy and Sheehan looked comfortable on the left side and Ball looked lively when he came on. After the late flurry it feels more like two points lost than a point gained and shows that league position isn't necessarily the best basis for the Sky pundits to base their predictions on!

It isn't inevitable that because we may be at the foot of the table by tomorrow we'll stay there.

Nevertheless, a look at last season's table at the same time shows that mostly clubs finish more or less in the same sort of area, but there are exceptions Norwich went from mid tablish to win the league and Stockport the other way. I'm discounting Soton because of the deduction.

Its a valid point, I just think though that the deduction distorts the usual way a season evolves.

As I've said it isn't inevitable we'll stay down here....just that it usually indicates a less good season.  We're still in the JPT mind.....

Didn't go and didn't listen, so my view is probably irrelevant... poor result, embarrassing that we still haven't won, Austin's miss was fucking abysmal, our league position even at this early stage is unacceptable.

Was a decent performance, as Carlisle looked useful. No way will we be down the bottom based on yesterdays showing. Morrison played very well, I'd say Douglas was our worst player, all in all, it was nearly the perfect away performance.

For the fact most of us have moaned about the defence and not getting in an experienced centre back, two clean sheets away from home is fantastic and hopefully that can continue.

The last two results can form the foundations of something better.

Perhaps a language barrier has been the problem so far??

Decent point, Charlie must have had memories of Wembley flood back after that chance at the end.

Seems there are enough positives to take from that game. Now to beat Saints again.

yeah but I expect Pardew having a decent season, winning the piss poor paint pot, winning 4-0 and then being sacked will play heavily on his mind.

I mean who wants to go into a club where the expectation levels are that high.

Someone like Eddie Howe would earn more than he does at Bournemouth - but could be out of a job by Christmas if Southampton arent promoted!!!

The timing would suggest you are right - but I wouldnt say it was obvious something had gone on. The Southampton chairman doesnt really have a clue.

In his eyes Pardew failed last season by not getting Southampton promoted and he failed again this year by only having 4 points from 4 games.

Make no mistake, whoever they bring in will be under a ton of pressure. Their chairman expects them to get promoted.

Howe turned down Peterborough in January to stay at Bournemouth - he played all but about 2 games of his career at Bournemouth - I dont think he is going anywhere.

But it is obvious Pardew was sacked for something unrelated to the playing performances surely?

There was an article in a paper (not sure which one) that said it was nothing to do with results and that they waited until they won a game before sacking so no one thought that was the case. Gave the impression the Chairman thought Pardew was too big for his boots and wants a lap dog that will jump to attention and do as he says, with O'Neill ruled out for exactly the same reason.

Ridiculous decision though. Pardew would have got them promoted, now they're in the same position as this time last season - in serious need of things to turn round quickly or they won't get anywhere near the promotion places.

However the only other time in the intervening years was 93/94 and we did go down.

Was speaking to several Carlisle fans after the game, they said we were the best side they have  played and are convinced we'll be top 6. You've just reminded me of that season under King where we had a dreadful start and lost 2-0 at Cheltenham that match when Gurney went off on one. I think we'd lost 6 in a row by that point. We went on to finish 10th in the end. Another season which proves that even in September your league position doesn't guarantee anything. I'm not sure if we were ever bottom that season though but we couldn't have been far off it after those 6 losses.

A lot could depend on say a good cup run maybe.
Got to say it has been a bit of a shock for me.....really expected us to fly out of the traps yet cannot see us putting a run of wins together which will be needed for a promotion push,we have some quality players but my opinion is untill we get someone to take the weight of burden away from Austin we will struggle.
I like both Pericard and Dossevi but it is obvious they wont score enough goals when Austin dont fire.
And what will happen if Austin gets injured i dread to think.

Personally I've long given up having any major expectations, it's what the Board think that is important.

What Reg said.

Many won't agree but if we don't get a few results in the next few games then Wilson will be in a dodgy position. He has spent a bit of cash and not replaced adequatly(yet).

He needs to get Douglas back on form asap as we are missing him really.

I'm still optimisitc of the play offs - and I've not been on the bottle. We're not far off being a good team and dropping Rose amd Prutton was a good start to sorting ourselves out. There is something missing at the moment but if it clicks for us we're going to give someone a good shoeing this year and I think we're capable of going on a good run. Maybe I'm wrong but I'm still hopeful.

Most should agree. 5 games without a win is bad enough, a couple more and he's in very dodgy territory.

All this crap about waiting to gell annoys me - that part of pre-season. You get your players in, give them games to gell and get them fit. I appreciated alot of our new players ended up here later - Dossevi, Ferry, Caddis but thats still poor management on our part, should have pushed the deals through alot earlier.

Title: Re: Carlisle vs Swindon Matchday Thread

Don't agree at all Dave. Early season form is often erratic regardless. Some teams over achieve, some under.  If a player is only available in the last week before the deadline then so be it.

Title: Re: Carlisle vs Swindon Matchday Thread

Tbf though Batch Wilson and Fitton were the ones banging on all summer about bringing in better players and getting off to a better start than last season.

Title: Re: Carlisle vs Swindon Matchday Thread
Post by: deltaincline on Sunday, September 5, 2010, 22:52:09
The late arrival of Caddis and company was a pain in terms of pre-season preparation etc, but I think Fitton and Wilson are playing hard ball when it comes to bringing players in. If someone is borderline or fucks us about (Gow) they dont get through the door.

The knock-on to that is that the side takes a while to sort its self out, results are patchy or shite and they come under pressure and scrutiny from keyboard cunts like us.

I'd rather have it like that and build slower than I and everyone else would like, if thats what it takes to get things right long term.

Wilson will obviously be under a lot of pressure at the moment, but he'll be handling that fine.

I'm impressed that we kept Charlie on TDD and that Fitton effectively told chancers like Millwall to fuck off. No doubt the lad will go at some point, but I also have no doubt we'll get the right money for him with sell-ons and that Charlie will get to join a club that suits him and his career development.

Bottom of the fucking league hurts like fuck, but we have enough quality to piss this league. No doubt in my mind that we'll up and running in the next couple of games.

Heh! heh!

I agree with that actually. I thought at the start of the season that we had a very, very decent set of players and a very, very good manager. I still think that. Some times you will get a few bad performances/results and it doesn't mean the players are suddenly not good enough or the manager has 'lost the plot' (a firm favourite on the 'thisis' board) There is no way anyone should even be thinking of Wilson being in the 'Hot Seat'. And I don't give a fuck what anyone else says, it can and does take time for players to gel - sometimes longer than others. Players are NOT components which you can just plug in. Of course, if Dave was in charge, he would have 'pushed the deals through a lot sooner'...(like Wilson and Fitton didn't try to do that ::))...this management lark is a piece of piss when you're sat behind a keyboard isn't it?

I am as fucked off as the next person about how the season has started and I will admit to being slightly concerned looking at the table and seeing us bottom. Not that I am worried about relegation, but it is a hell of a difficult place to launch a promotion campaign from.

That said, I am sure we are good enough to put a decent run of results together (we've already had two in the last two games) and I am sure we will do that. In a month's time the table will look a lot different.

We have lost 1 in the last 5, if this form was in mid season nobody would say a thing. The fact it has come about in the first few games means the leage table is exagerated. In real terms we would have dropped maybe 3-4 positions but certainly not be bottom. Plenty of time yet, ahem.

My only slight concern is last year when that was the case we were able to bring in players who changed our fortunes i just hope we can do that this year and also like i said we desperatly need Douglas to start playing again like he did last year.

It was always going to take time for the new bodies to gel. Wilson knows what this division is all about and under his leadership I find it very difficult to take our league position seriously at the moment.

We're only 3 points off of mid-table, and a further 3 off the top 6. Way too early to start panicking.

Exactly. From what I remember, 'udders were something like 10 points off 6th with 6 games to go at the end of last season...

We first registered interest in Simon Ferry last year and Paul Caddis in January. It was no secret that we wanted to sign these players and it was fairly obvious Celtic wanted to sell. I know its not as simple as just 'getting it done' but we should have had them both in before the end of July.

Other clubs managed to identify the players they wanted, get the deal done and have them playing in pre-season less than a week later.

You've answered your own question. Who knows why we didn't get them in for pre-season. But I'm sure there was a good reason rather than 'can't be bothered'. I suspect Celtic made them go on tour to make up the numbers.

All this crap about waiting to gell annoys me - that part of pre-season. You get your players in, give them games to gell and get them fit. I appreciated alot of our new players ended up here later - Dossevi, Ferry, Caddis but thats still poor management on our part, should have pushed the deals through alot earlier.

you do realise FM2010 isn't real don't you?

you can't just hit "continue" and the holding clubs board offers a response.
Celtic wanted them to make the numbers up and taking them to America. Nothing our management could do about that.

Dossevi was a trialist so needed to look at him properly. i believe that to be good management.

as with Sheehan. Leeds wanted money, we didn't want to pay, they release him, we sign him.

who cares how long it took. we got our men in the end.

Never that simple and, in the case of Ferry and Caddis, surely it was because Lennon had just been given the job so wanted to see how they performed over the pre-season before making decisions on them?

So what do we conclude from this? Wilson and Fitton are pair of fucking dumb dumbs?

The Celtic duo hardly played out in America - so I suspect our interest was known at the time, hell Fitton was even out there in the same place for the opening game. Celtics American tour finished on 18/07 - we signed them 2 weeks later.

I havent used Dossevi as an example because he was a trailist.

FM2010 isnt real? really? are you fucking kidding me? shit? really - I never knew that.

Yes, because thats exactly what I said, word for word perfect.

But, they dont do every single little thing spot on, 100% right, perfect every single time, do they now? Who does?

In Daves defence Magic as i said before Dave is just saying what Wilson and fitton have said isn't he? They as soon as 1 week after the play offs said

They want the targets in early
They will replace who has left
We need 8 new players
We want a better start than last year

None of that has happened. I am not concerned too much as i think we can turn it around but for me it's the same old story of please just shut your mouths and do the business.Wilson and Fitton put themselves under pressure with some of the things they make public. We all know for example that Fitton wants a good cup run and obviously good league position. So if we lose to torquay we are out of both cups early and thats when some fans will start using their own words to have a pop.

i understand that Don but it's not the boards fault if the targets they want they have to wait for.

regardless how quickly we want to do business others aren't in as much rush.

just pisses me off when people go on moaning about our board when what they have done for this club is nothing short of a miracle compared to where we were before.

some people now want instant success but it doesn't happen over night regardless of what people say pre season.
Yes it's a shame we're not top of the leage with 5 wins out of 5 but we are only 7 points away with 41 games to go.

why panic

DRS I prefer it that Fitton is honest and upfront in his interviews. Too many interviews have people acting like politicians and giving answers that don't actually tell you much and that is really boring.

Yes, you did.

I used Dossevi as an example of a player arriving late. Although I clearly wasnt referring to him when I said we should have done the deals alot sooner, as Dossevi was a free agent there was no deal to be done. Just a trial and getting him signed.

As a free agent he could have literally been anywhere before we got him in on trail. Ferry and Caddis were sat on Celtics bench, with the players and the club fully aware of our interest in them.

Fuck me, you lot are going to go loopy with what I say next, however - how long did it take a certain League One club who may or may not play in blue and white stripes to sign a player they identified as their top target who may or may not have at one point in the time line that is life been apart of another L1 squad that may or may not have played in red (...or white)

Just the first example that comes to mind.

just pisses me off when people go on moaning about our board when what they have done for this club is nothing short of a miracle compared to where we were before.

Ah, this old chestnut - yes they saved the club and we are all aware of that and enterally grateful but that doesnt mean everything they do is right and we have to support and be happy with everything they do.

I bet you had a good old moan at some point when Malpas was in charge! every fucker did!

Fwiw Spy so do i but what i am saying is people can't expect all fans to understand that. Being honest and upfront is all good but if what you say doesn't come off then people will ask questions and rightly so in my opinion.

As recently as last week Wilson said he wanted 4 new players in the next couple of days a striker, winger, and 2 centre halfs. We ended up with our 4th left back so i can see why some people don't understand why that happened after what he said the week before.

we all know chairmen, managers and players say what they have to at the time.
they're just lucky their aint got pinnochios problem.

10 games in is long enough to tell us where we are.

No. But my point is just don't fucking say it. They surely know what our fans can be like by now so stop making a rod for their own backs.

Very true. In my opinion the most worrying aspect was - we're at the end of August and Wilson still say he needs 4 players!!

Couldn't agree more.

Yes we are all disappointed with the start we've had and undoubtedly Paynter, Greer and Ward have proved hard to replace but to criticize Fitton for failing to achieve some lofty targets set in the heat of the moment after the playoff final is unfair.

As for the lack of signings I really think the squad we have should be good enough to compete with most sides in this division. Yes there are areas that need strengthening but for me the more pressing problems are that Wilson still doesn't know his best team - Who best to partner Austin up top, how to accommodate a combination of Douglas/Prutton/Ferry etc - and the fact that teams seem to be better at countering our style of play.

We were something of a surprise package last season but now teams know what we're about you're seeing people crowd the centre of the park more and hence why Douglas has struggled to put his mark on games and we've had to resort to slightly more direct football to an extent (obviously conceding early and having to chase games doesn't help in that regard)

Both of those concerns are why we have a manager and as long as Wilson is as good as we hope - and I am yet to see evidence to the contrary - I have no doubt will be sorted before long.
