The timing would suggest you are right - but I wouldnt say it was obvious something had gone on. The Southampton chairman doesnt really have a clue.

In his eyes Pardew failed last season by not getting Southampton promoted and he failed again this year by only having 4 points from 4 games.

Make no mistake, whoever they bring in will be under a ton of pressure. Their chairman expects them to get promoted.

Howe turned down Peterborough in January to stay at Bournemouth - he played all but about 2 games of his career at Bournemouth - I dont think he is going anywhere.

Didn't know that he had turned down Posh..we will find out soon enough.

I watched it last night. What shit highlights! Only showed two chances and the first of those was Ball. Did nothing happen before he came on?!

So Dossevi picks Town over international duty.........and remains firmly seated on the bench throughout!
Will be interesting to see his reaction next time he gets a call up.

But it is obvious Pardew was sacked for something unrelated to the playing performances surely?

There was an article in a paper (not sure which one) that said it was nothing to do with results and that they waited until they won a game before sacking so no one thought that was the case. Gave the impression the Chairman thought Pardew was too big for his boots and wants a lap dog that will jump to attention and do as he says, with O'Neill ruled out for exactly the same reason.

Ridiculous decision though. Pardew would have got them promoted, now they're in the same position as this time last season - in serious need of things to turn round quickly or they won't get anywhere near the promotion places.

The last time we were at the foot of this league after 5 games, 30 years ago (80/81) we didn't go down, stayed up on the last game of the season.

However the only other time in the intervening years was 93/94 and we did go down.
