People who post racist/nationalist dross on facebook, then post pictures of St. George and the Knight Templar on St. Georges' day. The irony of such, given their background, always makes me dispair and laugh at the same time

The Turkish fella who was in the Roman Army?
I wish the English were allowed to celebrate St George's Day like the Irish/Welsh/Scots celebrate their days, without the nationalism card being played.  Roll Eyes

That is, of course, bollocks. No-one's stopping you from celebrating St George's Day: Matchworn Shirts' post was explicitly about people who had themselves "played the nationalism card". But don't let that stop you pretending to be a victim.

He's right, though.

It's one of those things that the press and various other groups like to whip people up into a frenzy about despite it just not being true. Similar to poppies or St George's cross being banned to avoid offending people. (Also bollocks).

She must have had at least one person explain the problem with her comment to her? Surely?

I don't doubt that (the press bit). Although MS has managed to pick up on racist/nationalistic elements and their beliefs and the association with St George's Day. My comment was leaning more towards enjoying the day for what it is in the same vein as others enjoy theirs. Another thing that gets politicised, it's tedious.

The only thing more boringly predictable about St Georges Day than lefties saying "He wasn't even English" is middle-aged right wingers getting in a foaming lather about "not being allowed to celebrate" it despite the fact that all that is stopping them from doing so is their own apathy.

The only thing I care about with St Georges day is when are we going to start getting a public holiday for it, beyond that - I am out

I've thought about it, I'd probably 'celebrate' Jimmy Savile day of it got us a bank holiday.

Was quite bemused while honeymooning some time ago on learning that (parts of) Australia have a public holiday for the Queen's birthday
