It’s strange. When I lived in Greece I invariably tipped waiting staff for coffee or beers - after all its table service.

Now back here I haven’t tipped once.

I don’t have a problem tipping for table service if I have received excellent service throughout my meal. However, being asked if I want to add a tip at the bar for ordering 2 beers which took the young girl, as pleasant as she was, all of about 2 minutes. Should we start tipping the checkout operator? The Amazon delivery driver? I can’t recall anytime in my going to the pub history where tipping the bar staff was a thing!

It's just built into most EPOS systems now. Two of my locals have it and the bar staff always click 'no' before handing the terminal over.

I've raised this before, I am very dubious the staff ever see a penny of any tips added/paid by machine.

I have asked staff directly this point and they were happy enough for tips to be added on cards. I  Prefer to leave actual cash

Don't quote me on this, I think it was that way a few years back, that the staff were not guaranteed to see the tips added via card.  However, I am sure that was resolved - but you can ask before giving.

In the USA, they apply the tips towards the staff members wage, which is why service is always very good in restaurants and bars.  After a while you just factor it in, subconsciously, when looking at the cost of eating out.  I miss being able to get a pint without needing to feel the pressure to add some food items, and I miss just walking up and getting one, but the service is noticeably better.  I'd like a middle ground I think.
