I've raised this before, I am very dubious the staff ever see a penny of any tips added/paid by machine.
Don't quote me on this, I think it was that way a few years back, that the staff were not guaranteed to see the tips added via card. However, I am sure that was resolved - but you can ask before giving.
In the USA, they apply the tips towards the staff members wage, which is why service is always very good in restaurants and bars. After a while you just factor it in, subconsciously, when looking at the cost of eating out. I miss being able to get a pint without needing to feel the pressure to add some food items, and I miss just walking up and getting one, but the service is noticeably better. I'd like a middle ground I think.
