No more paying Charlie Austin £3500 a week to walk around the pitch.

Hurrah!

We've also shipped out some more experienced players, Austin, FBT, RHM, Dokes and even Adeloye.

That frees up some (most?) of the money we've spent

Its an important point, though i wouldn't include RHM in that list.

Optics look promising on the squad rebuild at present. Its started earlier, they have more experience and look physically stronger.

However its what happens over the next 2 months that will really show if the budget has moved much, or how effectively we have spent it. If our first line of back ups includes Dworzak, Hart, Brown, Aguiar etc then we are not in a great place.

It looks like we are doing okay at the moment, and ultimately the order of signings doesn't matter, but i would like a creative type to join next, be that a winger or number 10 style.

If we are still looking for a CB/LB, Lee Brown has turned down a new contact at Wombles. Ex Gas and Pompey. 33yo but would be a good back up if he was looking to come back to this part of the world?

We have not yet signed anyone that makes you stand up and think "wow, we mean business". Clarke is a good signing on paper-  but to put it into context, he was not an automatic choice last season for  League Two side. These are good, solid signings so far - it's no more than we should expect. If we add another 6-7 of the same quality, whether younger or not, then we will look good, but we need a bit of stardust.

I agree, its a better start than recent years, but outside that perspective its really just standard league 2 players. We certainly need that extra bit of quality, and for me creativity to be added. However history suggest the best players and/or the creative players tend to move later in the window.

I'd imagine with Kokolo, Longelo and Uwakwe we are pretty well covered at left back.

Although Uwakwe clearly fancies himself as more of a midfielder.

Charlie was on no more than £1,500 per week.  He wanted £2k which was refused,  but after negotiations he accepted £1,500.

As I said to someone the other day, we are building a team that is hopefully PO/3rd place capable. But one that would need to be shredded next year to survive in L1 should we got ourselves up.

I find that incredibly hard to believe. You may be right of course, but yeah.

Let's worry about league one when we (hopefully) get there.

Although I've seen some fans on social media saying they'd take a top 10 finish this season.

I can't fathom this mindset. No matter how crap we are, I could never accept not finishing inside the top 7 in this league.

I could even stretch that to top 3 if we weren't such a shambles.

Indeed, it's easy to forget just how many players have been released from the wage bill.  Right now, we haven't done anything that suggests we are spending more money.  What we have done is changed the type of player we are signing, bringing in a bit more presence and been there and done it, which seems like a sensible change.  We are still well short of a squad though.  Last season, ignoring the actual talent level we ended up with, the general feeling was that we had recruited a good first XI but were woefully short of cover and we'd be found out once injuries, suspensions and the grind of a season kicked in.  That all came to pass and then some.

Not convinced he will make it from the few u18 games I watched. Slightly worried if we have him, Johnson and Minturn in the squad. Need to get at least hart out on loan for the season.

Sonny Hart announced
On the Sonny Hart announcement post it was a picture of Jaxon Brown holding a scarf, that confirms he has signed too - heard he had a few options so good to see.
