Jonny Smith!

35 odd games for Wigan last season, under contract there for another season. Surely we aren't going to be pushing the boat out to pay money for him? Highly sceptical, but if it does happen, would be mighty impressive.

Sam M's weekly column suggests that Payne and Bodin both have contract offers, but that neither are particularly likely to sign them. We're also after a winger, but no names on that.

I see on Twitter that Payne is being linked with Colchester, surely we would be a better option than them

He lives/from that area so makes lots of geography sense. They're always a big spender too.

Payne will go with whoever pays him the most and gives him the longest deal.

Which at 29, is perfectly understandable.

He would be ideal for us in the #10 but I wonder if Kennedy will look for somebody stronger and more athletic and prioritise the budget there.

He will have played under the Cowley’s at Lincoln, which makes the move have some logic. Disappointing, as I think he’s a great player for this level, and I’d fancy our chances over Colchester. Really strikes you as a player than has not made the most of his talents. However, it does suggest that we recognise the need another creative, attacking midfielder, which is positive. No Kemp, no Payne, let’s see what’s next up Jamie Russell’s sleeve.

Sounded like a publicity stunt bid to me!

Being a hater of Smith's and Morrisey, I can only assume that these posts refer to lines titles from thier songs, otherwise you lot need to put the glue down..

Does anyone remember how long we had that limited transfer ban that they announced back in February?

I have a recollection of 3 windows. Just thinking if that's correct it must make the Jonny Smith rumour complete nonsense. Wigan surely aren't going to go from playing him regularly to letting him go on a freebie with us taking over his contract.

It was 1 window.

Hence how we’ve signed Ollie Clarke for an undisclosed fee.

Cheers. Got to say those "bans" really don't seem to be worth the time and expense for the FA to investigate at this level. Yes there are some transfer fees and a couple of big spenders but I'd have thought most clubs would be looking at free transfers anyway.

I'm pretty sure all the January signings were also undisclosed fees in the club releases so that statement didn't mean anything to me.

Yeah, we are into "suspended sentence" territory now.

I think it was originally 3 windows (but reduced on appeal) - which I think looks standard punishment based on other clubs hitting the same charge.

January we couldn't spend money on transfers. But we could take over contracts. Yeah.. I know.. Or rather I don't.

Someone suggested that one of the reasons we seem to be able to spend more in this window is that the budget from the previous window wasn’t spent and so we are now spending that money. Does anyone think that is a possible explanation for us seeming to have a decent budget? I doubt it would explain it entirely as the club was running at a loss so would probably be minded to save money from any underspends in certain areas rather than ring fencing the money for the next window.

We've also shipped out some more experienced players, Austin, FBT, RHM, Dokes and even Adeloye.

That frees up some (most?) of the money we've spent

I know nothing, but I imagine Austin's departure frees up a fair wedge.
