My allotmenteer neighbour in Stroud who played for FGR, Cheltenham and Gloucester City was briefly at STFC just after the annus mirabilis of 1969 and he sings John Smith's praises. We have some nice chats over the broad beans up here at Rodborough above Stroud.

I also have fond memories of watching John Smith play. John Smith was a key part of the 1968-69 promotion and League Cup winning squad. He was the playmaker in midfield of a 433 - Joe Butler was the holding player and Roger Smart the box to box player. Despite his appearance (he clearly liked a few beers as he was overweight and red faced - in today's game his physique would be more like a Sunday League player than a full time pro) he seemed able to find time and space and his passing range was superb - which enabled us to use Don Rogers' pace to its best. He was in the Spurs 1st team squad around 1960, but drifted down the leagues - we signed him from Torquay, and he was coming to the end of his career. His near post header from a left wing corner at the Town End in the semi final 2nd leg against Burnley was crucial in us taking the tie to a third game which we won to go to Wembley. if I recall correctly there were concerns about his recovery from an injury in time for the final, and he went off midway through the second half of normal time.

I loved the bloke my hero, prob because he defied the odds to be a footballer. Would surely have played for England if not for his problems, ok Don was the star but he was the brains. Did not stay for long but should be remembered as one of our all time great midfielders (wish we had him now)!

We also has a jonathan smith in 2011/12 a CDM who I thought of at first. He is 37 though and retired two years ago at FC United.

He was almost the opposite of John Smith - an incessant ball winner with timing that was not always that delicate. I think he joined Andrew Hawes on i player last season. I found his co-commentary much more insightful than his style of play would have suggested. Hope he has a good, post playing career.

Crawley Fans reckon Jay Williams is moving to us. Not sure if true or not but they seemed to be losing a lot of players atm.

6ft 2 CB, 23 years of age, promoted last season, will have played with Will Wright. He sounds ideal. (granted i've no idea what kind of player he is etc)

There was one forum post on the Crawley forum, that i mentioned here last week. Is this rumours to add to that, or the same thing?
I think the current rumours in play are Jay Williams (we would have to bid for him), Jonny Smith (under contract and would need a bid) and ongoing talks with Sean Morrison.

Quite possibly. I've not seen him sign anywhere else yet.

That's him. He was linked quite a while ago so no idea if we are still in the hunt or not.
