It depends on if they have paid up the full length of his contract meaning "technically", its fairly common in football for a manager to leave a club but still be on the payroll for the duration of the current contract that was the clubs do not have to pay a lump sum it can come out of the current wage budget monthly still, so they are actually on like a "gardening leave" scenario. Not sure if its as common with footballers though.

I have no idea if this is how it works with Ward and Sutton TBH.

Not the obvious profile we need, but a player with a bit of pedigree behind him. Feels a bit like the RHM signing in that there's clearly a name there that people know, but he's drifted a bit. Let's hope he works out.

The Taunton-born centre-back has clubs such as Portsmouth, Blackburn Rovers, and Doncaster Rovers on his C.V. and has racked up almost 400 appearances across the Football League – almost of half of which were for Walsall.

At 31-years-old and having not played since his release by the Fratton Park club last summer, it would take him a few weeks to get up to speed again, but fans have been crying out for an experienced head at the back to bark orders and guide the young and talented squad through difficult moments. Once fit, Downing could be an inspired choice by Town’s recruitment staff.
