I think this will be one we convert on.
Others at home: I'd hope Stanley, Donny with Morecambe, Wimbledon and maybe even Notts C possibles Away has not been good, Walsall and Sutton in there but I guess it depends on Sutton being dead and buried in the league. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Nemo on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 14:03:54 Interesting team. I think I'd have started RHM to try and keep his form (one game) going, but we have options so no harm in using them.
Aguiar starting is interesting, hope he kicks on - I can't see him as an obvious DM but no harm in giving it a go in a dead season I guess. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 14:04:31 To reiterate about RHM being pissed off, Gunning was on the radio saying you play well and you will get picked, simple, you play badly and you will get dropped. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: DV on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 14:11:09 Seems odd to drop RHM after mid week but let’s also not forget RHM has missed loads of football the last 5 or so years due to the injury. So perhaps we are just managing his minutes?
…of course there is other stuff to take into consideration like who will or will not be here next season. For arguments sake if it’s know RHM won’t sign a new deal is there any point? Maybe Harrogate have quicker defenders that Tranmere so we’re going for different tactics that work better with other players Or maybe the team selection was pure random. Who really knows Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Jimmy Quinn on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 14:11:21 Yes it should be that way but RHM was actually quite brilliant at times on Tuesday yet gets dropped. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Audrey on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 14:15:23 It’s not just the player rotation, though. The whole set up changes. Tuesday had Minturn and Dokes at LB and RB - very successfully. Now Minturn doesn’t even make the squad so Dokes will have to revert to CB. 2 up front Tuesday is now, I suppose, Drinan on his own.
How do you get any consistency changing players and set up game by game. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Nemo on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 14:17:41 It’s not just the player rotation, though. The whole set up changes. How do you get any consistency changing players and set up game by game. He actually said some quite interesting stuff about the full back set up in the presser- he wants to have two full backs who can play either side, will use the 'inverted' style (UGM on the left) against certain wingers and thinks that young CBs i.e. Minturn should learn their trade at full back. Between the lines I think he doesn't fancy Kokolo as an inverted RB (fair enough) but will let him play as a standard LB. In this team UGM is RB, Kokolo LB, FBT and McCarthy central, right? As for the forwards, McKirdy could definitely be playing the Glatzel role in this line up. We'll see. Having all moaned (rightly) about Flynn playing Plan A under all circumstances and if it didn't work, trying Plan A, I'd rather Gunning trying stuff based on the opposition. It won't always work, but I think it has a better chance than the "we just play our game" stuff which only works if you're very good at it. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 14:18:23 Harrogate today start with 5 changes from the side whallopped 4-1 at home by Newport on Tuesday.
Their side today though is just 1 change from the team that were beaten 9-2 at Mansfield, the only change being Burrell in for Abu at right back. This side has 5 changes from the side whallopped 4-1 at home by Newport on Tuesday. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Peter Venkman on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 14:25:23 Are Harrogate the most English team in the football league?
Today Harrogate have a squad of 29 1st teamers that includes 26 English born players, 1 Northern Irish, 1 Irish and 1 Scots. By comparison we have 28 1st teamers listed with 17 English, 5 Irish, 1 Scots, 1 French, 1 Gambia and 1 German. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: DV on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 14:27:17 Yeah echoing Nemo.
Consistency is somewhat overrated in this day & age. Obviously consistently winning is still good (!!) but with squads getting bigger and bigger (particularly at the top level) there is a lot more rotation. I imagine if you did the stats the numbers of players who featured in every game 30 years ago compared with now it would be stark contrast. Nothing against changing the starting XI & formation on a game to game basis tbh. Probably better than the alternative of keeping everything the same every game no matter what. Something most complained about under our last 3 managers Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Audrey on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 14:29:43 See the Teds lost at AG to Cardiff and they’re already after sacking Manning and his ‘modern’ boring style.

Bycroft McCarthy FBT Khan Dokes Devoy Aguiar Kokolo McKirdy McGurk Drinan McKirdy and McGurk playing nearer to Drinan and not as wide with Kokolo and Dokes on the overlap and Khan almost acting like a sweeper sat in front of the 2 CB's. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: DV on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 15:47:41 Ok half.
Solid if unspectacular. We’ve played ok but the passing / crossing in the final 3rd hasn’t been crisp enough but we’ve definitely played more of the game in the our final 3rd than Harrogate have. They’ve worked it well into the final 3rd a few times but like us haven’t really created any decent chances out of it. I’d like to see McKirdy come left & start cutting inside onto his stronger foot next half. Maybe drop McGurk on a bit deeper and more central to get on the ball Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: hobnob on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 15:48:47 Substitutions will decide this so let’s hope Mad Gav gets it right.
Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Berniman on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 15:49:02 really. it's terrible. no pattern. both teams kick and rush. no genuine goal action. bored This is going to be the pattern for the rest of the season i fear, nothing really to play for, the majority of the teams we are playing the same, and with the regular swapping and changing of first 11 we are going to struggle to get into any sort of pattern of play. It is what it is and we are where we are, the general model of this club for the season has resulted in this i feel. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Audrey on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 15:50:12 Think Elboozy could inject a bit of pace instead of McGurty, RHM too, in place of Aguiar.
Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Nomoreheroes on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 15:50:41 Not sure that both teams are dreadful. They are of the same standard. We don’t have that urgency and running up top.
I think that McKirdy, Aguilar and McGurk are trying to play a similar sort of role. McGurk has been the quietest of the 3. But it’s perm 1 or 2 from 3 for me. Drinan has been lively and has had both of our best opportunities. I can see Boozy putting crosses onto his head soon. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: theakston2k on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 15:52:18 Opinion split seems to vary between where people are watching it. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: RobertT on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 15:52:49 In isolation, that was OK. It feels a bit worse because we've fallen into a situation where looking a bit better than Harrogate is deemed progress.
They look like they are sitting in and waiting to hit us on the counter - they look a bit of a threat when they do spring. We are not set-up to counter, but also not set-up to possess. We are looking for direct and wide balls to try and stretch them, so it becomes a bit scrappy when that isn't hitting it's mark. We've generally seemed the more attacking team, but they probably had the best chance, where a defender just flicked the ball as it was going to their winger about 6 yard out, meaning it hit him rather than being able to tee up a finish. We weren’t great, we weren’t bad. Same can be said for Harrogate. Both teams lacking that extra bit of quality in the final 3rd. One silly free kick & one lapse in concentration and that’s really the only opening Harrogate had all game. Bycroft hasn’t made a save. We haven’t troubled their keeper either but maybe troubled their defensive a bit more. Think (in hindsight) I’d have preferred RHM (who wasn’t very good) to start and McKirdy to come on later in the game to add a bit of energy. Overall a meh game with a meh result in a meh season for a meh club Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Nomoreheroes on Saturday, March 2, 2024, 16:56:07 Disappointing, but a fair result.
A few below par performances there - Devoy, RHM, McKirdy, McGurk & Khan Second half Drinan didn’t do much and McCarthy dipped UGM looked to be putting in a shift Some predictable players coming on, but possibly the wrong people coming off. - Performance wasn't very good. Flat - Maybe Tuesday and the poor pitch took it out of us - Ball speed to slow. We were inbetween. We didn't know what to do. It was horrible to watch - Gave away a bad goal, then came alive - Pleased that we have got to a point where we are disappointed with a draw against Harrogate at home - It wasn't one of Gunning's favourite games to watch - Didn't want to lose at the end - There was a penalty shout missed at the end - It is what it is - Changed things round with RHM and Glatzel. They were fatigued and sore so couldnt start - Today the subs were angry subs. Frustration - McKirdy was always coming off at half time - Aguilar did ok to be fair. Any of the others could have come off - Minturn: Out for the season. Hip area muscle injury - That's two young defenders out for the season. Frustrating as we would want to see whether they can do it for next year - How to you get consistency for the rest of the year? (Hawes): What do you mean? We have had consistency! Thought we were sloppy, didn't really see what we were trying to do and a couple of bits of quality didn't make that. Second half was marginally better after Harrogate scored. There are a few that you'd have around, but nobody stands out for me. McCarthy is the closest to a good quality, top of the table type player, and he's going back to Barnsley in a couple of months. It's weird isn't it. Yet Gunning is going to {position wise} potentially end up worse than both Flitters and PB... ...which on the face of it in L2 for Town fans, those types of league finishes/campaigns under those managers, were considered to be the lowest of low bars in the modern era... even finishing below seventh was considered unacceptable {and we're not talking that long ago}. Yet the bar of acceptance/apathy/helplessness appears to have shifted lower again and now into an unthinkable substandard and seemingly consistent state of ''Beamish'' monitoring. The performance yesterday was pretty dire to my tired eyes. Maybe really wanting us to win the game has coloured my view. Little tempo, drive, desire or belief throughout. It's never easy to break down an opponent that has little interest in going toe 2 toe. We just didn't have the tools to do so, or maybe we did & they just weren't on the pitch together at the same time. "It is what it is". Sadly. Exactly, we do not have a player currently that buzzes around and makes things happen to lift the game out of its drabness, all very one paced with a lack of awareness many times of a quick pass that may have cut through the Harrogates defence. Disappointing performances all over the place as I hoped we might have pushed on following the Tranmere game. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: adje on Sunday, March 3, 2024, 17:26:22 Maybe. But ridiculing people who are guilty of the terrible crime of renewing their ST is sad if not downright ridiculous.

But ridiculing people who are guilty of the terrible crime of renewing their ST is sad if not downright ridiculous. …and also ridiculing them doesn’t help anyone. Just divides the fan base more so… Wasted energy. Basically my overall takeaway from Saturday was that it all seemed quite disjointed. I suppose the chopping and changing all the time from starting line-up to substitutes (which still seem pre-planned) means that we didn't seem to be very cohesive. My other takeaway was that despite bringing on pacier players in the second half, the tempo was mind-numbingly slow. I assume that this was to try and draw Harrogate out of their low block, but it just seemed like we were going through the motions to a home defeat. With that said, good work from Elbouzedi down the right and a lovely CA header got us a point.
Disappointing really, I felt like Harrogate, despite their good away stats (Before 9-2 and 4-1 defeats granted) were there for the taking. Mansfield away, already seems like a mountain to climb to come back with any points. Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: 4D on Monday, March 4, 2024, 09:09:09 We thought that with Stockpot too Bobster. Already got 3 points of Mansfield, let's make it 6.

That said it’s football and unexpected results happen so who knows. If you could offer me a point now & just move on I’d bite your hand off Title: Re: Swindon Town v Harrogate Town Matchday Thread & Gossip Post by: Bob's Orange on Monday, March 4, 2024, 09:22:38 We thought that with Stockpot too Bobster. That's not to say we can't get anything of course TBF to Bob, Stockport had won one of the five games prior to playing us, whereas Mansfield have won 4 of their last 5. Deflated again....we cannot kick on. Dunno about the Team selection, we were all scratching our heads in the Pub asking why... Two poor sides trying to get something. HM has to simply pass that loose ball back to the defender to clear instead of trying some fancy turn. Gave away the free kick and we all know we cannot defend...awful. I didnt see where an equaliser was coming from but we notched from more poor defending from them. Poor game...a bit parky. chipping away at the 50 points and then we can all relax a bit. Terrible Season. |
