Title: Shrewsbury Town v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Friday, August 16, 2013, 23:00:06
The Opponent:  Shrewsbury Town

Why do I get the feeling there won’t be a sudden surge of impressionable young  Swindonian’s running down to the nearest willing tattooist to have their name inked upon their forehead’s? OK, the past of Nile Ranger is somewhat, well, shocking.  It seems some may wish to judge him on this past, which, of course, is their prerogative, and others may wish to judge him on the fact that he has been charged with rape. The thing is, regardless of previous convictions, innocent until proven guilty remains a basic tenet of English law, something I am glad of. The only evidence I have the slightest bit of interest in is whether he is capable of scoring the goals and creating the chances that take us, and keep us in the top 6 of League 1. Looking at his footballing past there isn’t really a great deal to suggest his 1 goal in every 25 appearances is likely to do this, but who knows, League 1 could be the level that sees him flourish. Sadly I feel this signing may gather a bit of negative publicity, especially with the inbred folk up the A420. Is Nile Ranger the man to wear the No.9 shirt? Time (and court appearances) will tell.

So, its the other STFC today. Our friends from North Wales have looked forward to this match on the last few occasions now, I think it started when we had the audacity to sign Di Canio as our manager, and turn them over at the County Ground later the same season, much to the disgust of Graham Turner, mixed in with a heavy dose of Dosser provocation. Work won’t allow me to get to this one today, I made the journey last season and have to say the Shrewsbury fans were amongst some of the strangest beings I have came across. The welcoming committee at the pub resembled a scene from outside the Tesco Express in Blackbird Leas and inside the Meccano-like glorified non-league ground a handful of their ‘lads’ spent the entire 90 minutes giving us the finger   From what I can remember, the parking was fucking dreadful at Shrewsbury, a good 15 minute walk to the ground, and the pub was just as far. All in all I’m quite happy to be missing this one, although it would be more fun than collecting garden weathered sofas in Tetbury and Calne.

Worth a visit – If you do have a bit of time (and the yearning to find a decent pub), the indoor market in Shrewsbury is off Baker Street on the first and second floor and easy for non-locals to miss but it is well worth finding and exploring all the way to the top. It has a wide range of stalls selling food, books, music, arts and crafts and most importantly, much much cheese. Apparently it is open on a Saturday, which kind of makes sense.

They’ve served us both – Jimmy Quinn, Jamie Cureton, Tim Parkin, Moses Ashikodi, Jake Jervis, Dave Hockaday, James Collins, Ian Woan, Paul (What a free kick) Evans, Tope Odebayi, and the magnificent Fola Onibuje! Seems to be a fair few strikers amongst that lot.

Where the opposition gather – One of the various Swindon related threads to enjoy. I must say, the past form of these guys has been hilarious at times. I have never seen so much fury from one little club’s main forum! All seems fairly quiet at the moment, although the usual Swindon troll hasn’t visited yet it seems. (NOT GUILTY)

http://blueandamber.proboards.com/thread/84877/nile-ranger

Last 6 – LDWWDL (After 2 games so far this season they have lost 1 and drawn 1)

The Odds –  Shrewsbury 12/5  Draw 12/5 Swindon 5/4. In case you do want to throw some cash away, Nile Ranger is 6/1 to score the 1st goal. With his previous goalscoring ratio, albeit much from the bench, and not much chance of him starting, 16/1 would be about right. I am hoping that my dismissive attitude leads to him scoring a 2nd half hat trick.

The Son Says – We are moving home on Sunday, but he still found the time away from packing a 20ft containers worth of STFC memorabilia to predict a 2-0 victory for the one and only STFC.

The Prediction – If, and its a big if, the same Swindon turn up that did for the first half against Stevenage, it could be a slaughtering. However, I think Nile’s initiation song on the coach on the way up (Coolio’s Gangstas Paradise) could make the lads feel a little uneasy, so I am going to agree with the lad and go for a 2-0 win, goals from Storey and Luongo, 4’926 in attendance with 646 travelling up.

And Finally –  This took some digging, Martin Wood from Shrewsbury, is the world’s tallest town crier, measuring in at a lofty 7ft 2”! Oh yay indeed.

I'd nearly forgot how deluded those Welsh cunts are. Ta for the reminder Shaw Rosso.

3-0 drubbing in our favour tomorrow. Turner to blame the Kaiser, the senile tosser, Dosser to burn an effigy of Shrewsbury made of lego.

Slightly surprised to see Shrewsbury described as Wales.....unless something serious has happened in Shropshire which I failed to notice.....however, if that is simply an attempt to wind up their fans, it should be very successful!!!  There is no hatred for the Welsh so intense as that from the English side of the border!

Last season they weren't very happy when we referred to them as being Welsh....

Coupled with James Collins starting for us.....

The blow was softened when he missed a sitter in front of their home end and subsequently subbed off after an hour...

All those bitter twats go on about is losing the game at the CG when PDC was here and tapped up Collins.

If we worried about every decision that went against us in games and what opposition managers get up to we would have to hate every team we have ever played!

Hope we take it to them today, pass them off the park and win. I predict a nice 2-0 win.

Just cant shift the feeling that this is going to be a bit piss easy.

I expect Old Man River is having his daily influx of monkey glands and shredded tiger penis to maintain his youthful appearance - before exploding at 4.45 after witnessing a humiliating 4-0 defeat

The main reason they are bitter is because they had their best season in years and no one gave them any attention as everyone was focused on us and Paolo. We then rubbed salt in by stealing their top scorer. Considering fuck all happens in Shrewsbury, they are gonna be pissed about this for decades.

My favourite part was how much they loathed PDC despite the fact he never had anything but good words to say about them and their bitter old scrote of a manager.

They really dont like us , I find it mildly amusing that we are disliked by so many other teams. I have absolutely no ill feeling to Shrewsbury at all they are so insignificant in footballing circles apart from the fact they stole our initials.

1 - 2 Luongo and the Lone Ranger

As the subject of fickle football fans is in vogue round here, I remember he got a good booing from one corner of about 100 irate fans, then when his number came up for his substitution, cuing more jeering, he turned around to that corner and gave them a couple of polite claps and ended up getting a standing ovation off the pitch.

I think it was two seasons ago that we played them on the August BH Saturday and the Shrewsbury folk festival was on. Great atmosphere in the pubs that lunchtime including jamming sessions with harps and sword dancers in one of the pubs. Shame it 's not a week later as I would have gone there this season.

1-1 with Luongo scoring again.

Shrewsbury is indeed very nice and I very nearly did spend an afternoon there in 95-96 drinking lovely beer in a lovely pub where the Landlord claimed to be a Town fan (I suspected he claimed to be a fan of whatever club's fans were drinking in there). I tore myself away in the end to go to the game (the one where we'd already won the league). It was a great shame when they moved from Gay (tee hee!) Meadow to the Lego Stadium.

Nice to see the taffy sheep shaggers (for the record I do know where they are but they hate being called Welsh) are knowledgable about our team, a quote from their forum.

Quote
So Five spurs players on loan a Newcastle Forward on loan and they have signed a former Spurs player nothing to worry about then.

Didnt realise we had 5 loanees from Spurs and that Ranger was on loan too, I guess they must know something we don't know....or they are just a bit backward in reading facts.

I know they signed a loanee England U20 teammate of Pritchards yesterday, a winger from Midlesborough called Adam Reach.

Other transfer dealings so far are Alex McQuade defender a free from Bolton, Dave Winfield defender free from Wycombe, Tamika Mkandawire defender free from Milwall, Akwasi Asante striker  1 mth loan from Birmingham.

Players out are Marvin Morgan to Plymouth Argyle and Matt Richards to Cheltenham.

Except the one about the "homer ref". Apparently Shrewsbury seem to have in their heads that a referee from Salisbury must be biased, ignoring that fact it wasn't a pen - it was outside the box (just), the lino didn't flag, the ref like most in L2 was just dogshite, plenty of decisions went against us that season and one dodgy decision in February doesn't lose you the title.

The only time I predicted a result correctly was at half time at the Manor when we were being stuffed 3-0. I said we'd get a draw, and John Trollope scored to make it 3-3. My memory could be wrong though, so I'll check that later.

Last match Chang got it right (unless his forecast was a post-match edit), so if he predicts a win, I'll go with him. Or anybody else that predicts a win. Attendance 3,506, 1,200 from SN1

Not listening to the game as BBC Wilts commentary never reflects the game very well. Stats on bbc website (sometimes out as well) don't look good though.

Just got to keep playing the football, they scored through a mistake which will happen the way we are playing, the worry is the lack of chances.

What minute will Ranger appear? i'm going with 68

Hold on, we are losing? I've spent the last 30 minutes thinking it was 0-0. FFS.

Anyone want to give an overview of the goal?

Only listening on radio but was a ball across our own back line that was intercepted and buried by Reach
Playing around at out from the back is ok as long as everyone is comfortable receiving the ball and the passer is aware of who is around

Well this has been dire listening in terms of performance and commentary.  If this chap is going to be commentating every game, I'm going to struggle to carry on listening.  I don't think I've ever heard worse?

Sky mentioned we've lost our last 5 away games and only scored once.  Obviously doesn't include Brentford, but seems like the new squad are picking up where the old one left off on the road.  Oh and Roberts has just scored again for Chesterfield!

That's that then.  Byrne error.  He could end up being a bit of a liability, made numerous mistakes last week but got away with it.  I've like to see McEvely back in there tbh if he's back to full fitness.

Will be interesting to see how the next few days pan out, I don't personally think Cooper has done enough to get the job on a permanent basis.

He is a good league one defender and is much better defensively than Byrne in my opinion. Not sure we have enough defensive players in midfield to warrant having two attacking full backs. We may have to play it safer away from home.

There were 3 up front Vic, that's a ridiculous question. Of course Jon Paul McGovern is a striker.

In other news, Arsenal lost 3-1 and the home end was 90% empty at full time. Disgraceful support from a group of fans that have been thoroughly spoilt over the years.

Even Jeff Stelling just commented 'Swindon need to appoint a manager and quickly, they've now lost their last 6 away games and only scored 1 goal'.  Not sure the 4 games last season are overly relevant, as we had a different squad and at that point a manager, but it's not the best of starts.

The concerns for me are how much influence a manager will be allowed to have and the continued desire to play with a formation that sounded to be struggling.

You need to take your own advice on this one.

Either that or for once actually give some clear, logical reason as to why you think Cooper deserves the job.

Tamworth. Cooper achieves 0 wins in 5. Tamworth are bottom when Cooper leaves the club.
Peterborough. Cooper manages 1 win in 13. Peterborough are bottom when he leaves the club.

Today again we lose away without scoring a goal. And it could/should have been more than 2-0.

Cooper has achieved little in the game as a manager. He lacks league experience. I question his coaching ability and his tactical nous. I question his ability to change a game, and even to motivate our players.

He is simply the cheap option.

I've said that Cooper may as well be appointed because they're giving Cooper a chance to shine. If the inevitable is that Cooper is appointed because he fits the ethos of this board then I'd rather that it happened sooner rather than later. The uncertainty is potentially damaging and does nobody any favours.

I don't disagree with you regarding his record. I won't comment regarding his coaching ability, tactical nous, ability to change a game or motivational ability because I'm neither qualified to comment or afforded the opportunity to witness any of the aforementioned first hand.

Personally I'd rather the board appointed someone like Tisdale.

It always makes me smile. Do people expect us to go through the season unbeaten? Last weekend people were saying the football we played was something special and  Cooper should get the job permanently.
I don't really think 3 league games and a cup tie with Torquay is enough to formulate a reasoned viewpoint on how well, or badly, this season will map out.

Fact is Cooper should have been appointed weeks back,it has nothing to do with his past record but all to do with the players(most very young) knowing what the hell is going on.

Course if he turns out to be a disaster then you get rid.

Also when you have the board picking the team....well work it out for yourselfs.
Think the board are working very hard to try and make things work....but the longer we go with no one in charge it will only get worse.

I don't think Cooper deserves the job.

That's a decent reply to be fair.

Based on one mistake in one game? Have you forgotten how poor McEvely was?Or did you not think so? Not arguing just interested in what you think McEvely's strengths are.

I think McEcerly's strength is in defending. His distribution and forward movement isn't best at times. That's probably why he's not in the team.

I've not been impressed with Byrne. I think he's defensively weaker, sometimes positionally suspect. Yet at times he looks half decent and could improve (being young).

Develop a fucking sense of perspective, something that has been direly managerng amongst our fanbase for as long as I can recall...

Indeed I have heard a rumour from a reliable source that the tie up with spurs has nothing to do with any relationship between Power and Sherwood.  Instead as spurs fans have a reputation for being whining deluded and getting on the back of their players they were seeking a similar environment for the players to experience in the lower leagues.

The players are not here for playing experience - just to be shouted at to get it forward.

No idea if it will be Cooper or not,  but if not and it's a name so to speak its going to upset a lot of people who are desperate to portray the puppet manag idea as fact.

Think arriba means that the die is cast...whoever's coach has got told the style of play, got given the players, so get on with it. Given they're young and inexperienced they're going to have bad days as well as good, so it makes fuck all difference who's boss.

Can't really comment on much as I wasn't there, but it came as no surprise when the goals came from mistakes from Hall and Byrne. They don't look good enough to me. And in the LB debate, I'd rate our options as McEveley>Smith>Byrne from all the games I've see the 3 play in our colours.

Agree with all this. Jay Mac is a much better defender and that's what I want first and foremost in our defence, attacking ability is almost a bonus.  His experience would be usefull as well given the youth within the starting lineup.

Bryne could very well a usefull asset to the club in the future.

I mean, we knocked out our rivals in the Capital One Cup (1st Round), Got to the 4th round of the FA Cup having knocked out Premier League opposition, had a day out at Wembley and won the league..

What a fucking shambles that was.

Just got back.

Still trying to work out who's who even with a programe. Pritchard looked to lightweight. Williams huffed and puffed. Ward solid as you's expect. Fods same was Ward but really had no chance with the one on ones for the two goals, which should have been three certainly if not four or five. ineffective up front. We'd still be playing now and not socred. Pissing about along the penalty area cost us. They could have kept us in our own half easily for most of the game, in fact we made it even easier by doing just that for them. Ref was as usual a cock.

Good away support, though not very noisey. Piss poor home support. Nile will be an asset when he gets cleared form his impending session with the beak. I understand there is going to be more tranny activity next to warm the cockles of your hearts. Jed mooching around The Brooklands pub before the game giving tit bits tot hose who cared to ask, engage or listen apparently. I'm sure some others will add as I have this from a geeeeezer who sits behind me in the DRS.

Miss the gypsies next week so lets hope we can get back to winning ways.

On a positive note we are on course for 69 points with our 100% home record  :D

Just got back. We were dire today.

Tempo was too slow, we lacked creativity and we were awful at the back. I can't think of one player who deserves praise. As previously said, Pritchard seems too lightweight, he wouldn't challeng for anything. Luongo was anonymous and Kasim was poor on the ball. Can't moan too much at Williams as he had no service.

Shrewsbury were still rubbish but they hardly had to get out of first gear today which illustrates how bad we were. Their fans also helped to reiterate my opinion of how deluded they are.

I was positive going to my first game of the season earlier after the positive reports from the start of the season so it was a shame we didn't turn up today. However, we are a young team and we are going to have off days, we need to stick with them as I'm sure there is a good league one side there.

Thats one of the most ludicrous posts I've seen for a long time. I'm not anti or pro Cooper, simply a town fan who wants to see us be as successful as possible. If it wasn't for Kevin Macdonald Cooper wouldn't even be here - he certainly wasn't a candidate before Macdonald got the job, and he shouldn't be now. Quite frankly, if there's this level of debate going on about whether he is the man for the job, that alone provides me with the answer - he is not.

Title: Re: Shrewsbury Town v Swindon Town Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Dr Pierre Chang on Saturday, August 17, 2013, 20:03:11
Well, at least that performance is a reality check for those who wanted Mark Cooper to be given the job off the back of an opening day defeat, a win against a League 2 side who have yet to win a game and shipped three at home to the scum today, and 45 minutes against Stevenage Borough.

A dismal display, devoid of any effort or quality. Not one chance of note - a long ranger from Ryan Harley which was straight at and easily parried by the Shrewsbury 'keeper being the best we could muster.

Lets start with the positive. We may well get a proper manager in as soon as possible after that performance.

Now the negatives, and there are many.

The much discussed 'backline passing' cost us a goal early doors after a pass by Kasim to Hall was intercepted by the impressive Shrewsbury left winger who neatly finished. What followed in the first half was as ineffective display as I have seen for a long time, with us continuing to pass it about around the back and getting nowhere. No attacking threat what so ever, the one rare foray forward ending in a low cross from Harley being easily gathered.

The front three of Pritchard-Williams-Storey were starved of service but Williams was a lazy, moaning bastard who should have been subbed at half time. If Storey wasn't a youngster who has come up through the ranks he would get a much harder time from our fans because, if we are being honest, he is a very, very limited footballer who offered no attacking threat today or last week infact. Pritchard tried to make things happen when he got the ball but failed and went to ground a fair bit without getting anything.

We came out for the second half looking sharper but that didn't last long. The positionaly inept Thompson was found in the middle of nowhere and Wes made a neat save from their winger to keep it 1-0.

First sub, and Louis Thompson replaced Kasim, who looked exactly like a player whose only outings last season were for Luton and Macclesfield Town.

Luongo, last week being touted as a future Premier League player, this week looked like a future conference player. Probably his worst display in a Town shirt. Harley was also poor.

As the half wore on, there were cries of 'Bring On The Rapist'* and we saw Nile 'he'll do you up the arse, and he won't even ask'* Ranger entered the fray for Williams whose number going up was met by cheers from the mainly silent away supporters.

* these were the loudest chants of the day from our fans.

A cock up between Ward and Hall put their striker clean through but he somehow shot wide. We failed to offer anything, Ranger had a few decent touches and when fully fit I reckon he will be a handful.

Now then, lets get onto my favourite player Nathan Byrne. I was staggered we signed him for a fee but in his defence I admitted he was ok at home but shit away. Well, in his first away match since his horror show at Griffin Park, he seemed to have got through it without error.

With the match nearly over,  is then robbed of the ball in our box, and their striker has an easy finish. Absolute liability but unfortunately he is un-dropable.

My thoughts that this side would struggle on the road were confirmed. Shrewsbury are a poor outfit and will be down there. We will cause plenty of sides issues at home but need some more experience and physicality on the road if we are to pick up enough points for the expected promotion charge.

Shrewsbury were chanting 'boring, boring Swindon' - they weren't wrong.

And to add to that:

Plan B is needed, as this sort of football style wont be easy when the pitches start digging up.

Please stop fannying around at the back, sometimes it's better clearing your lines than trying to find a pass with two players on you.

It's sometimes good to watch, but it's finding the right blend.

I would've kept Williams on, and kept two up front when chasing the game late on. The 20% fit Ranger won a lot of challenges, but no one there to lay it off to.

Are home form and pitch will be vital on our position.

This was a very poor performance. Totally controlled by an average Shrewsbury side. I thought Ranger done more in his 15 minutes than the rest of the team did in 90

I knew this reaction would come once we lost convincingly. This result was always coming and it will again. Get used to it this season. If you think a new manager will come in and change a squad thatbhas been picked for him and make small, inexperienced but technically good players into 6'3 brutes then think again.
If you want a plan b then you need the players to deliver it. A new manager won't make any difference.

Jed doesn't help as he's a cock who keeps raising fans expectations. A prick who I can't wait to see the back of to be honest. But I don't blame the side or Cooper for where the team are. They are doing as well as can be expected.

As for selling up I am sure Jed would be delighted to sell up if you made him a bid, apart from his somewhat cringeworthy PR I don't get the hatred for him,  without him I understand we possibly would not have a club as he took over when no one else wanted to?

I agree totally, It's Jed and Power that are the problem i think, if they had appointed a manager give him a bit of a budget let him choose his own players and tactics then fair do's but it's all this Spurs crap and I'm not convinced about our style of play, wasn't even convinced against Stevenage as it was asking for trouble passing the ball around the back all of the time.

If we pay £450,000 for Jake fucking Jervis it will be the most laughable thing this board have done.  As Sonic said, we've either got some money or not.  If we have, I'd have rather used it to pay wages and keep a couple of the players we let go tbh.

Have to agree with Arriba, Jed is a complete cock.  What sort of chairman ponces around pubs before a game giving out bits of information about transfers.  Utterly pathetic and attention seeking and he could well end up with someone punching him before long.

Interesting point that Chang made about Storey as well.  It looked a bit like he was carrying an injury  last week, totally off the pace and made a lit of errors.  Sounds like he was no better today and also sounds like the Williams boo boys were out again.  Wouldn't surprise me if he's the next oneout the door tbh.

We may well have disposable cash with the sale of players which is being put back into the team.

Sounds sensible to me - whether it will be money well spent is another thing

Pretty much. Didn't make it hard for Shrewsbury. Just faffed around with the ball in front of them and made silly errors which cost us two and should've been 3 goals. We started the 2nd half reasonably but that didn't really last long and it wasn't until Ranger came on that we gave them something to think about.

The old "lining their pockets" insult

Still waiting for a shred of evidence to support this ludicrous claim

I probably shouldn't have used the word pockets, as I wasn't meaning Jed's personal pocket, but the club as a whole.  I lost a lot of interest in the close season and was hoping it would return when the football started.  Unfortunately it hasn't and therefore I wish I hadn't spent a lot of money renewing my season ticket. I don't like the direction the club appears to be taking, but that's a personal opinion and not really sure how the fact I've lost some interest because of it makes me a mong tbh?

On a related note, do people honestly thing it's normal for chairman of football clubs to give out information on transfer activity in pubs?

missed this,wasnt ignoring you.
I cannot see how anyone could tell if he wasn't getting the best out of them yet.

I think it is too early to say too. I think the evidence points to Coopers record being suspect but I agree that if the scope of the job is limited to getting the player you are given to play in a system and style you are told to play then shelling out loads of cash on a 'top' manager is a bit pointless. They will be hamstrung to the point of being ineffective.

On the other if the manager has more of a free reign than that then I wouldn't rush to appoint Cooper.

--------------
On another note, is it just me or has Morshead been a lot quieter since his bollocking clear the air meeting.

No. At the moment, with a 'not terrible' start to the season, and a successfully reduced budget, I'm a lot less 'anti' with regards to the board and the running of the club than I was. I do, however, think Jed is a bit of a weapon. I don't like what I see and hear of him (as a person) at all. He's classless, unprofessional, and comes across as a bit of a dickhead.

so to all of you who insist cooper isn't the man for the job - who do you think is?

saying that the start we've had means he's not up to it or whatever many posters have said is just arbitrary clap-trap.  if we'd had a manager in before the start and had exactly the same results would you all be calling for the guy's head already?

so many people looking to rubbish the club at the moment and that won't change if a new man comes in.  if we yield 20 odd points from the next 10 games you'll all be moaning about something else entirely, if we bag 10 or so points from the same number of games then it will all be, oh, maybe we should have given cooper the job, at least he knew the players better, blah, blah, fucking blah.

yesterday was a bit crap, yes but the end of the sodding world it isn't - maybe we should start to operate like many soaps and dramas do, different writers for each episode, and just have managers on a weekly basis because no matter who may get the job at least 80% of fans will find a reason to hate him such is the lust for blood at the moment.

Less attacking than Byrne, but seemed solid defensively at P'boro. And I'm yet to see him control a simple pass out for a throw by using the outside of his right foot; so on that fact alone, I like him more than Byrne.

Byrne is way too small to be a fullback, teams will exploit him like yesterday. Every time the goalie kicked it, it went towards him, and the only way he wins a header is if he fouls the player.

not true, he may not be strong enough or a good enough defender to be a full back but his height is not necessarily a reason to write him off as a full back - Man Utd's first choice right back is rafael - he's a short arse, our poty last term was NT, again, he's pretty tiny - rottweiler inside mind :)

He's too small and too weak, his positional sense is awful and he's being played on the wrong side. In the Premier League where more teams play football you can get away with smaller fullbacks, as they are mainly used for attacking. In League one teams aren't as technical good will use the hoof to exploit his height.

Thompson is bigger and more physical.

Don't think size is an all important factor in being a full back.
According to wiki (!!!) Byrne is 5ft 10. Jamie Vincent was only 5ft 11 and wasn't exactly built. Could bloody defend though - which to me in the most important attribute in a defender.

What you will find with players like Byrne etc out of academies is that they can often struggle with the hussle and bustle of first team football, particularly at our level. At academy level clubs are trying to out football each other. Keepers play it short, passing football is encouraged etc. Not alot of direct football is played at all. In league 1 getting pelted by high balls-direct style football with 6 foot plus players in their twenties coming at you is a massive wake up call. This was and is my biggest fear with so many young kids in our team.

Byrne clearly lacks a bit physically and this was apparant vs Brentford, highlighted again yesterday with the goal conceeded. The lad has to learn quick as the fans will soon get on his case if it continues. If I was setting up a team to play us i'd be instructing my players to hit diagonal balls over the full backs as that is where we can be ripped apart. Think we will struggle against direct and physical sides this season. To be expected

we have missed mason in the last couple of matches, the other midfielders all want to sit deeper, mason is naturally more attacking.  i still think we have a decent side, just need to tweak things a little - ranger will help in this regard if found innocent as he'll offer a completely different 'out ball' to what we've had so far

Agree with Arriba - the diagonal balls will be dangerous but they can be stopped with pressure on the ball in central midfield. It is the part of the Michel's-like play that we are missing, and they need to go together.

Have to say from the clips Hall and Byrne didn't look too clever defensively.

Byrne really needs a bit of defensive coaching and hopefully some of the young players will be receiving that and learning - rather than end up becoming demoralised.  The talent is there.

New manager please.

Beating Stevenage playing awesome football didn't make us brilliant. Losing at Shrewsbury without offering much doesn't make us awful.

I'd agree with those who would like to see a decision made on the manager one way or the other soon - just to put that issue to bed. Also don't think it will make a hige difference given the way we (seem to be) approaching things this season.

Think the squad is decent, if Ranger and New Striker can offer us a more target man presence that should pay dividends once they are more settled in the side.

We'll be inconsistent but that's hardly new, even in the first half of last season.

Shrewsbury fan here. Not gloating like that other knob earlier, as I know we’ll probably get turned over at your place, and lots of other places too, no doubt. But some of what I’ve read on here deserves an alternative view.

Graham Turner’s been in football management for more years than most STFC (of both locations) fans have got brain cells, so he is well used to the better players of his clubs being “tapped up” and lured away by larger pay cheques. It’s a simple fact of mercenary life. So why did he (and Shrewsbury) get so Panesar’d off when it happened to James Collins?

1) Collins was lured away by money which Swindon couldn’t afford.
2) Swindon then found an implausible excuse to delay the transfer fee tribunal until after the transfer window was closed. Therefore Turner, working within a realistic budget, did not know how much money he had available to get Collins’ replacement. Result? No replacement.
3) To compound matters, Swindon then didn’t (couldn’t) pay the transfer fee for several months.

In similar circumstances, Swindon fans would have been screaming about anal rape, and PdC would have burst several blood vessels. “Old Man River” was extremely restrained by comparison.

Turner (“the senile tosser”) deserves more respect than the ageist drivel posted early in this thread.

One other thing.

We don't hate being called Welsh. We all have a fair percentage of Welsh blood in us (it's inevitable so close to the border), and enables us to support both national teams if we're so inclined. Quite useful when it comes to Rugby Union!

If we don't find the Welsh jibe particularly funny, it's because we've heard it several thousand times over several decades. It's about as original as the "Taming of the Shrews" headline...

"The senile tosser comments aimed at Turner have mainly come about as a result of his bitterness towards us when we beat you at our place a couple of years ago. Yes we should have had a player sent off but the bloody foul was outside the box."

And PdC wouldn't have reacted in the same way? Or any manager?

did cooper throw his toys out of the pram and say that if we don't get promoted this season it will be because the ref didn't send asante off, talk to him even, for the extremely reckless 2 footed challenge on foderingham's face?  of course he didn't.

Football fans are the same everywhere.  Carried away after a couple of wines?

Like a full bodied Barolo or a robust Amarone?

Think you mean Opera Fans.

Perhaps you were confused by the Town End's "la donna e mobile" renditions on that fateful visit to the County Ground?

don't like french wine.  shopping for wines made out of france in french supermarkets is a shit, 2 or 3 aisles of french wine and about 2 meters of shelf space for the rest of the world.  grr

No, PDC would have scheduled extra training sessions for 3am Monday morning, demanded the signings of eight new loan players and sacrificed a cow to Cthul'hu, all in one answer, running to approximately 8 minutes.

Genius. :D

Fred Elliot will agree. He tells me it's quite expensive though.

If it had been near the end of a season and promotion was riding on it and Swindon were winning at the time and went on to lose it, Cooper may well have done. You don't know.

Many years ago I pitched up in Shrewsbury after a weekend's camping around Wenlock Edge...it was a Sunday evening, so back then pubs didn't open til 7:00...but a wine bar seemed to be open so needs must...I'd never been in a wine bar before...I've never been in one since.

When we got Collins we had the money to pay for him.

I would suggest the transfer tribunals we had at the time for both Collins and Archibald Wotsit put us in the shit much more than you lot. We were stuck in a transfer embargo because of it right at the time we were in a great position last season.

Inside out the area or inside the area? To send off or not to send off?

Those were decisions for the ref - nothing to do with our club.

And lastly - who gives a fuck any more

If anyone goes camping anywhere near my Wenlock Edge they will get booted...hard.

"Who gives a fuck anymore?" Clearly some people, on both sides.

My intention was only to point out that your vitriol against Turner is unnecessarily excessive, just as (a few) Salop fans dislike of Swindon is.

Turner is the best manager we've ever had (not too much opposition, I admit), and I believe is a decent bloke.

Anyway. I wish you guys all the best for the rest of the season. I mean that. I know a couple of Swindonians, and they're roight nice.

Fred Elliot will agree. He tells me it's quite expensive though.

It is a little pricy, more of a treat wine. In Luxembourg it's 13 euro a bottle in petrol stations, probably cheaper in a supermarket.

Fond memories of Shrewsbury. Me and a mate were bored on a Thursday night and stuck a pin blindfold into a uk map, and said we'd go on the lash wherever it landed for the weekend. Shrewsbury was the lucky recipient for our liquid Olympics. Must have been good as don't remember a thing about it, bar the hangover on the train back.
