Title: Swindon V Rovers Matchday Thread.
Post by: herthab on Saturday, November 22, 2008, 06:36:11
Haven't got a clue what the score will be, if Byrne can fire them up and get them playing as a team we've got a good chance of getting the win though.

Looking forward to it, it's usually a good atmosphere and it's always nice to see Phillips...............

I'm writing off this game. We will concede, but I can't see where the goals will come from.

I'm more worried about the fact I'm not that bothered by the prospect of losing to Rovers.

That's the sensible conclusion from the available evidence..well apart from the not being bothered bit. Would our last clean sheet on the road been at Rovers?  Wouldn't mind a 0-0.

Well obviously I hope you are right. I was looking at it from the point of view of our bet player and goalscorer being out, coupled with a defence that is leaky.

Lost the last 2 away games, without scoring, no clean on the road this season, and Rovers tend to score a few, and ship a few....but we're Coxless.

No Cox, Lambert scoring freely, cant see us getting anything out of this game 2-0 defeat.

I've just done the weekly shopping and got an absolute bargain on a massive puff pastry steak and ale pie for dinner tomorrow. This means we'll win today*.

*we won't, but I'm trying to be positive.

That's the sensible conclusion from the available evidence..

We've had this conversation before Reg. There is no logic in football. If there was, there would be no Pools because everyone could predict the results. I therefore predict a 2-0 win for us, based on absolutely nothing.

Title: Re: Swindon V Rovers Matchday Thread.
Post by: No Longer Posh Red on Saturday, November 22, 2008, 12:46:20
As with the other pessimists on here I don't see us scoring enough goals (without Cox) to win.

Unless Bazza can pop in a late goal or two.

Hoping that we can grab a point from this, but fear we might lose 2-1.

I'm sure we have, along with many others, I woke up this morning and for some bizarre reason, momentarily convinced myself we'd keep a clean sheet..this random burst of optimism, didn't last long though.

With Cox suspended and the fact none of our other players ever score ever we conceed 6 every game and Byrne waves his arms around too much then I cant see anything other than a 6-0 defeat.

Not sure really. With Williams seemingly in a bit of trouble (although he could be guilty of nothing!) Byrne will have to bring in some coaches and backroom staff. If he doesn't have the contacts I'm not sure Fitton will appoint.

Byrne should have been given to the job till the end of the season before Malpas was appointed. It would've been a win win situation. If he was rubbish we could have got rid easily, if he proved to be a genius etc etc

Not sure now though.

Yes I don't dispute that, but he has most of his experience at Plymouth academy. Will he have the contacts? My gut feeling is he'll turn to the likes of Sturrock. We need to get away from his cast offs imo.

All things considered a point is a decent result. Sounds like we were getting battered at times and to go out and get 2 goals when so many people said Cox was our only hope of scoring is pretty good.

Gutting to concede at the end like that but STFC4LIFE's evaluation of the whole situation is spot on, we're doing ok lately

Dont get me wrong i am happy as fuck with the point but paynter in midfield for fucksake

You mean the same Paynter who set up both the goals?

I like some of the things Byrne has done - seems to have been the instigator of us doing well attacking-wise, but we're a defensive mess - it needs sorting out. Byrne has been a heavy contributor to our team organisation and it's terrible. He ticks a lot of the boxes, but I fear his style is too focussed on raw talent, which won't get us anywhere long term (look at King for example).

I don't know exactly how they scored the equaliser, and like I said, it's so frustrating to concede taht late on. But at the end of the day we've come away with a point when some were contemplating whether or not we'd even score, as though Cox is the only person in our squad who doesn't become physically incapable of kicking a ball within 18 yards of the opposition's goal

Agree with this post.  Malpas showing up without his own staff should have been a huge red flag.  These days, you need more than a manager.  Luggy showed up with his team, that's what we should be looking for this time, manager, first team coach, reserve team coach, and a new goalkeeping coach to follow.

I do think its a good point. We would have all taken it before play, just gutting that it was Rovers who got the last minute equalizer. If it had been us making it 2-2 late on we'd look more positivly on it.

5 unbeaten. 9 point from the last 15.

You do raise a good point DRS. Much of the things that the fans have slagged Malpas off for are probably Byrne's influence. I'm convinced he has an eye for player's skills and in fact tries to utilise them in other ways i.e. players in different positions. For players like Timlin, it has worked well, others it hasn't. Unfortunately most of our players are not developing youngsters. They've played in their positions for a long time and adapting doesn't work.

I'm also of the opinion that the bollocks 4-3.5-2.5 formation is Byrne's brainchild, as evidence by the lineups in the last 2 games. It doesn't work and never will.

That said, I think someone like Byrne clearly knows a decent player when he sees one and I think he can get good performances out of players.

I don't think that Byrne made the players loose confidence. it took Malpas to do that.  I believe he tried to make the players do things that they were not capable of, violating one of God's (Clough's) commandments.   Yes, accommodating Macca seems to be Byrne's brainchild.  He is letting the players get back into their own way of playing, and building confidence.

Aljofree is not the answer in defence or captain.

So then why is Byrne putting players in their unnatural positions too? I'm not trying to slag him off too much as we've got a couple of decent points in the last 2 games, but this sudden 'Byrne is alright attitude' after loads of people were slagging him off two weeks ago amazes me.

I disagree. If Byrne is worthy of the job give it to him now, because if he isn't, by the time the new appointment comes in, he won't have much time to assess the squad and be ready for the transfer window.

The longer it goes on, the longer we'll get a Malpas situation again.

Well it wasn't the reason we didn't get 3 points. Neither was Joyce starting. From what I could hear on the radio, we were lucky to get anything at all, which in that respect makes it a good point.

Had he kept that position throughout the match I would fully agree with your point. Incidentally, I think that same reason why we were losing to Leicester until the last 10 minutes.

I wasn't there, but maybe some mad experiment of having somebody who could come back and break up play when we weren't in possession, and get forward when we were.

Fair play to Byrne for changing things early when it wasn't working. That's the biggest indication that he might be the man for the job I've seen (heard) so far, pretty strong move.

I'm still not really backing a manger though, don't really mind who gets it. I'll support them anyway and being negative about people just so you might have a chance to say "I told you so" is only clever when you're 7.

I cant agree with all this "good point" business,if you concede a 94th minute equaliser due to indiscipline it's a bad point in my book
With the greatest of respect adje, that's bollocks. Wovers bombarded us for the last 20 minutes and the lads stood up well - without that we could have conceded a lot sooner. We were right behind Phillips' goal so I couldn't say what was the direct cause of conceding it but it looked a good strike and like I say we'd done well to hang on that long. Gutted walking away because if we'd held on for another minute we'd have won but if you'd offered me 2-2 and another strong battling performance when we got in the ground, I'd have taken it. Good game, especially considering it was a derby and a good away point, especially as we were without Cox whereas they still had League 1's other leading goalscorer

Incidentally my comment was a general one not aimed at anybody specifically, but comments supporting Byrne were few and far between when others were saying get rid.  It's a slight curio that at teh moment we've yet to play 7 sides in this league and 5 of them are in the bottom 9 or so. Having said that our record against the higher placed teams, so far, is no worse, than against the lower placed teams.

Therefore I don't think we can necessarily assume some easier games on the horizon.

PBoro, I predicted for a PO finish...their away form is average, but they have a potent attack....another game then, where we'll probably have to score at least a couple to get anything.

Feels like 2 points dropped, of course it does at the time, but definitiely a point gained. The "bollocks" bit was in refernce to indiscipline. Stroud is a swivel-eyed loon and one of the best arguments I've seen for drugs tests on refs as well as players. He was giving things against both sides no-one else could see. We put Radio Brizzle on on the way home and Wovers fans were ringing in complaining about him as well.

One thing I will say and I know it's mentioned in the Joyce thread, but I hope to god the new manager restricts the players comments in the press as Morrison should never have said what he did yesterday as it was always going to see Lambert score.

We all know Ricky Lambert is a decent striker at this level, he's scored a belter against us before today. Did Lambert even look in the Swindon Advertiser? Maybe, maybe not. I doubt very much that it made much difference to his game apart from maybe a cheeky little grin as he windmills in celebration.

Ultimately it's up to Morrison & co to prevent the goals going in whether or not you've "psyched up" the opposition.

Whoever comes in needs to make this the number one priority. If we take a lead we dont loose our shape, we keep going in our formation. Obviously its not helped by having someone like Pook in the middle (who did OK and won some tackles) but he's no midfield general. I thought Jack Smith tired badly in the last 20 minutes and they had acres of space donwn the left. Obviously Barry Corr tired as well, but he ran his heart out for 60 minutes, chased down every single back pass.

We just gave away silly free kicks though, although the ref did give most things when they dropped to the floor, the central defensive partnership is not right though, Morrison was making a few silly mistakes at times and I'd possibly put that down to no real experience in the back line to tell him to 'leave it' or put your foot through it' etc, both him and Pat are vastly inexperienced and coupled with Timlin new to the LB role as well, the defence in itself lacks experience.

When's Vincent fit ?

I thought Corr was excellent, full of running and rarely played a poor ball.

Why did Timlin hand over the capn armband when Aljokefree came on, surely if he's captain for the game he should keep it unless he's subbed.

I think it maybe time to rest Morrison, but a partnership of Ifil & Big Pat would worry me.

Aljofree, like it or not, is the club captain. If he's on the pitch he'll wear the arm band

Its not hard to register on a Rochdale message board start the rumour and watch it run....

Also, is Aljokefree the worst insulting name in history? it sounds so retarded and lame

Fair enough DV. The person I heard it from was adamant he 'knew somebody' at Rochdale and that the fee and term were agreed. If it was Tails it turned out he wasn't far wrong after all!

Not unexpected is it.

Been out now for 4 months now and doesnt even get mentioned. Was surprised that he actually on a mention on the old teletext pre-Rovers as an injury doubt.

I wonder if he could help coach the defence. If we're paying him we might as well have him doing something.

I am quite disapointed. No one has done any player ratings.

I wonder how fit he was when we gave him the year.  If he knew he was struggling he would have snapped their arm off.  As solid as he was last year, surely some of medical should have taken place at his age?

To be honest, its not a bad time to have an injured senior pro around.

With Williams gone our backroom staff must be down to next to nothing.

And his wanker sign as he walked to the goal in the second half. Fair enough to some extent - we gave him bucketloads, he slyly gave some of it back.

Agree and FWIW, I think it's a classic case of you love to have him on your side, "our wanker" and all that.
