Title: Swindon Town FC v Brentford FC Official Matchday Thread
Post by: Shaw Rosso on Tuesday, November 20, 2012, 00:00:04
The opponent: Brentford

One of the consequences of 3 games in 7 days is having 3 extra large portions of my ramblings, for this I apologise unreservedly. Post  Yeovil, this season is really starting to feel like last season, something mentioned by a few regular TEF contributors over the last few days and the stats speak for themselves really. This is how we are looking after 18 games, this season and last.
2011/2012 - Played 18, Won 9, Drawn 3, Lost 6, For 28, Against 16, Points 30
2012/2013 - Played 18, Won 9, Drawn 5, Lost 4, For 29, Against 14, Points 32

So its another Tuesday night under the lights at home, and making the fairly short journey along the M4 is Uwe Rosler’s Brentford. I have to admit, Brentford still remains one of my favourite away days, a proper old style ground, stinking toilets and a poxy hatch in the wall for the pre match Bovril. Not many people know that the floodlights at Griffin Park were donated by Chelsea, and in turn, Chelsea reserves play at Griffin Park. Brentford FC (you can see why they changed the name from Breguntford) were formed by Brentford Rowing Club back in 1889 looking for a winter sport to participate in, as The Thames would often freeze up over the winter. One thing that is likely to have pissed a few Bees fans off back in the 60’s was an attempted takeover by local rivals Queens Park Rangers when Brentford ran in to severe financial difficulties, the takeover was narrowly averted when they managed to secure a loan of £104’000, and QPR were sent packing. If Bee’s fans had their way, both teams will be meeting in The Championship next season, along with us, of course.

Brentford itself has quite an impressive selection of business that chooses to have its headquarters there. GlaxoSmithKline, Carillion, Audi, Kraft Foods, Sega Europe, the list goes on. Perhaps this is why During the English Civil War, Brentford was fought over by The Royalists and The Parliamentarians, even Julius Caeser kicked off in Brentford back in 54BC, having a right Roman ruck with local king, Cassivellaunus. But perhaps the finest piece of history they have to offer is Brentford Docks, built by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, with a rail line linking the docks to the Great Western Railways. *It is rumoured Brunel buried a Paolos Red and White Army Wembley T-shirt and a signed David Duke pair of Predator boots somewhere near Brentford Docks. *Complete lies

Brentford have a high calibre of supporters, Hollywood A-Listers, Cameron Diaz and Jim Carrey,(I have no idea why), Who guitarist, Pete Townshend, Comedian, Dominic Holland, former BBC Director General , Greg Dyke (who is also Chairman of the club), and my personal favourite, facially challenged Z-lister, Dean Gaffney aka Eastenders Robbie Jackson!  Another comedian/actor, Bradley Walsh was also a professional for the club back in the 70’s, and it was rumoured that blubbering Celtic fan Rod Stewart once had trials for them back in 1961, but it was not plain sailing and he was not offered a contract with the Bees. When questioned about this years later, he said, “I don’t wanna, talk about it”.

What are they saying about us? –   “Just hope we don't show them too much respect. Clearly they're a good side but only a few weeks ago they lost at home to Macclesfield in the FA cup. Let's be positive and believe we can go there and win”

Brentford Last 6 – LWDLWD (9th on 29 points)

The Threat – Clayton Donaldson has hit the back of the net 8 times so far this season and has a career average of a shade better than 1 in 3. He can be a bit of a handful but if Ward and Devera keep up the form from the Yeovil match they should be able to keep him quiet. Believe it or not, our former captain has managed to score 4 times for them so far this season!

A Warm Welcome Too -  A few people have probably been looking forward to this game, the return of midfield maestro Toumani Diagouraga really will have whet the appetite for some. Also returning is that Jonathan Douglas bloke, couldn’t give a poop about the underperforming gypsy and there is a certain irony in the fact he left us to better himself. One man trying to change the fortunes of The Bees is all round nice guy Mark Devlin, who is the current Chief Executive at the club. Anyone that could tolerate Diamandis for the length of time Mr Devlin did will always be ok with me.

The irrelevant stats – Brentford have the current best home form but away are another matter. It looks like they set themselves up for a draw away from home, as they have only won 1 game, drawn 6, and lost 2. In that time they have scored 9 goals and conceded 10. One thing we may want to look out for is between the 85th and 90th minute, Brentford have scored 6 goals this season.

Head to Head – We have met Brentford in the league on 74 occasions and we slightly have the upper hand having Won 31, Drawn 18 and Lost 25.

The Odds –   Swindon 10/11    draw 12/5    Brentford    3/1 (Bet 365)  First goal scorer odds may be worth a look if you fancy James Collins to carry on where he left off on Saturday, you can currently get 5/1 or if you think Darren Ward could open the scoring with a towering header then 33/1 seems to be the going rate. For those wanting to back the inevitable (more often than not), Douglas is a poor 12/1 with William Hill but back to Bet365 and you can get a rather large 28/1.

Sid Says – With minimal encouragement, the normally pessimistic one has predicted a 2-0 home victory.

The Prediction – A winnable game, no doubt about it. Brentford set themselves up away from home not to be beat. They play a bit of football but if we put them under enough pressure then we will win this 3-0, with goals from Ritchie, Collins and Ferry, who subsequently runs past Douglas kissing the Town badge in from of 7’821 (493 away)

And Finally – The first drawing of the moon made with a telescope, and the first telescopic observations of sunspots, were made at Syon House in Brentford. Thomas Harriot , who had surveyed Virginia with Walter Raleigh, obtained one of the early ‘Dutch trunk’ telescopes and set about making astronomical observations with it, seemingly before Galileo. He was at the time in the pay of the Earl of Northumberland, and lived at the latter’s Syon House by the Thames.

We know we'll make chances, depends if we can take them. They seem to be a steady side, but 1 win in 9 away games  is poor. Probably will be a draw though, 1-1. Unless douglas gets sent off on a nice wet pitch, then 3-1 to us.

I really don't understand the resentment of Douglas. Fair enough, he played badly in a poor team for a season before he buggered off. But isn't there the possibility that he became disillusioned by a club selling its best players and going down without a fight? I can't say I blame him for his bad performances or for moving on. Good luck to him.

That being said, I hope we smash them tonight. 3-0 Town.

Whenever we play the Bees I’m reminded of their legendary goalkeeper from the late 50s / early 60s, Gerry Cakebread, surely one of the finest footballer names ever. Played 374 games for them. Not bad when you consider he was always a part-timer.

That’s official part-timer, unlike JD who played like he was one during ‘that’ season.

He's saying in the adver interview that the club didn't offer him a new deal and he didn't have a choice about leaving.

Exactly the opposite of the story of when he signed for Brentford.

Brentford have completed the signing of Swindon Town captain Jonathan Douglas on a two-year deal.

The 29-year-old Republic of Ireland international was out of contract at the Robins and informed the club he wanted to leave earlier this week.

He had been at the County Ground for two years and made 95 appearances.

"He will add an enormous amount of experience and quality to our squad," Brentford manager Uwe Rosler told the club website.

"Jonathan is a player that attracted a lot of attention from many other clubs," Rosler added. "We were aware of his situation early on and we are fortunate to get him."

Swindon Town skipper Jonathan Douglas likely to leave
Jonathan Douglas

Douglas started his career with Premier League side Blackburn Rovers

Swindon Town captain Jonathan Douglas has informed the club he is leaving, with Brentford his likely destination.

Douglas, 29, joined the Robins from Leeds in 2009 and made 84 league appearances in his two seasons.

"He rang me to say he'd had an offer from Brentford," chairman Jeremy Wray told BBC Wiltshire.

"In truth League Two does not appeal to everyone and from his perspective if he has the opportunity to play at a higher level then I can understand that."

Wray continued: "I appreciated him calling me personally, I respect his honesty and I wish him well.

"In a way it feels like unfinished business. He was our player of the season in 2010/11 but he was disappointing by his standards last season.

"But on another level I think it's important to have a clean slate after what happened last season [Swindon's League One relegation]."

JONATHAN Douglas has decided against signing back on with Swindon Town and will instead join League One Brentford, the Advertiser understands.

The Irishman's contract expired at the end of last season and he has since chosen not to return to the County Ground.

The club wanted to renegotiate a new deal after he and the other load of shit cunts took us down that then subsequently fucked off. He was captain and meant to be the protagonist (in PDC's words) but had a big yellow streak up his back at the end of that season and bottled it that season and for the next one also.

He showed fuck all loyalty to the club that had paid him well (it's football blah blah blah). He phoned Wray during negotiations and said Brentford had offered him a contract and then fucked off.

Nothing to do with money (according to Wray) or closer to home (he lives in the Cotswolds) simply that he wanted to play in league one. The division that he worked so, so hard to keep us out of the season we went down.

Subsequently on twitter he took the piss out of us playing Macclesfield in League Two so fuck him.

I'm also in the camp of not feeling these great levels of resentment towards Douglas. He was crap (along with the rest of the team) in our mismanaged relegation season, but has everyone really forgotten what a good player he was at this level before that? How dominant he was in the big games (against Leeds/ Southampton etc.)? I bet you it's that Douglas that turns up today, and shuts a few of us up.

And while I'm up here on my soapbox, I don't understand why football fans are always so desperate to remember only the worst aspects of a clubs recent history through the conduit of ex-players and managers instead of the best (as evidenced recently in the outpourings of negativity towards Austin/ Wilson and now Douglas, with whom we shared one of the best seasons in recent history). Isn't being a lower league supporter miserable enough most of the time without foregrounding the inglorious failures of our recent past rather than than using these peoples return to remember our successes?

Anyway, I'm expecting a game in which Brentford dominate central midfield (in the way we used to in our play-off season but have never quite done since Douglas left  ;) ) but for us to create more chances, with the result depending on whether it's one of those games where we take those chances, or one of those games where we don't (one from the Andy Townsend school of analysis, but you really do never know which Swindon is going to turn up in front of goal).

Most people would have done the same in his position and taken the opportunity to stay in league 1.  I’ll chose to not put the blinkers on and block out the previous season to that and remember that he had one excellent season and one average season that seemed crap but he was dragged down by the shit around him.

I’ll be interested in what a definition of the term “Bottler” actually is when it relates to the accusation thrown at Douglas, he certainly wasn’t going into games giving 50%.

I comment on the good and the bad. I didn't give any shit to Wilson or Austin but when players like Douglas leave the club he's just help relegate with his dire, pathetic perfomances then takes the piss on Twitter it kind of leaves a bitter taste in the mouth.

I remember the good days of Wilson et al with fondness but that's not to say I should therefore use those memories to cover up the shite players and managers we've had.

Fair enough JJ,

But would people on here have felt the same 'vitriol' if he had come out and said that?

It seems to be that there are some people who just seem to think it unacceptable that players might actually want to leave STFC.

And wishing injury on him? I personally think thats way OTT, but each to their own.

So someone should chuck a bottle at him and see if he is, indeed, a bottler.

Just hope one of our players doesn't see fit to give him a 'Beauchump' type welcome and get given a red.

3 points for the taking

As for wondering what Swindon (in front of goal) will turn up - well we have scored 10 goals in the last 4 league games.

None too shabby

I don't think him moving to Brentford was why our fans are pissed off at him but because he said throughout that summer that he wanted to stay with us and then left at the first opportunity.

He was part of our most successful season in 10 years then our worst season in 10 years the year after.

He has moved on now and so have we. For the record I do think he could pretty much walk into our first team this season its just a shame that HE decided to leave us and not stick around because with hindsight he didn't have a great season with Brentford last year (yes he got player of the season but Brentford struggled so he would have done better to have stayed with us and had some success and a League winners medal and a trip to Wembley instead).

Everything goes through Douglas and so far this year we don't do well against a decent midfield, he might be lower league but he's still a decent player.

How about pegs?

I think Ferry and Bostock are the perfect answer to Dougie. He sits deep and offers protection. The passing and runs of those two, would give Dougie nightmares and give us lots of room in my opinion.

I wish him no ill, but I think he had an above average season with us and he showed his colours by not being up for the fight. Wilson was to blame by playing the completely useless PruttyPruttyPruttPrutts over Ferry.

You could be right there.

Ferry has obviously been told to attack the box a lot more as in recent games he's had more shots (including the air shot v Sheffield) in the past few games than the whole of last season.

Ferry's off the ball runs against Yeovil (especially into the box) were absolutely outstanding.

Who'd of thought a few weeks ago we'd see a partnership of Ferry and Bostock in which Ferry was the attacking one and Bostock the defensive one! Both players transformed under the current regime.

Expect Chris Martin's gut to be busted by the end of December.

Douglas was a decent player who, like others in the team that year, performed well above his normal ability in his first season. I don't have any particular animosity towards him.

On the same note of former Town players at Brentford, Diagouraga has carved out a pretty decent career for himself - I remember him being somewhat awkward and ineffective when he was on loan with us.

Dougie had a good first season culminating in the play off final.

He, like a few others then had a shit season during which he seemd to get more and more "Am I bovvered?" whereas the liks of Mtt Ritchie and Simon Ferry (when they were played) put in a full shift and then some to try and drag us out of it.

Dougie then fucked off so that he didn't have to suffer the fruits of his labours whereas Matt and Si stuck with us and did the business.

Only time I went to Brentford, the away end was full so they started putting us in with the home fans and telling them all to budge up to make space for us. Then they threatened to through us out for not sitting in the right seats, despite them being the ones we were told to sit in. Highlight of the game was a pitch brawl with pretty much every player involved. Must have been in the 90's sometime.

Spot on Munich, Kerryred's turning into a senile old bastard, it was Zippy who drove his shot just over late on. Brilliant game though, town fans were brilliant.

I remember Brentford's centre backs running about like headless chickens in the second half, after Chalkie and Mitchell failed to re-appear, and lots of big plod obscuring the view too.

PDC interview sounding down:
(Missed some as it cut out)
- Sad for Thompson. It was one mistake and they scored
- He gave his best but all the players didnt do the same
(Missed some as it cut out)
- Need to show desire and ambition
- We had an opportunity to remain close to the top....
(Missed some as it cut out)
- Going to analyse the game but it was clear that some players...
(Missed some as it cut out)
- Didnt lack creativity tonight. Created chances
- Not happy as we didnt perform in the way we could
- It was a difficult game as they came to defend. They then capitalised on 1 chance
(Missed some as it cut out)
- We can play attacking football but if we dont score we seem to lose confidence
- Brentford is a better team than Yeovil, which is why the result was different
- Even playing like we did we had more chances. But, didnt put them away
(Missed some as it cut out)
- Not easy to change all the players that he wanted to.
(Missed some as it cut out)
- Then something about being unhappy with 3-4 players who had been with him for a couple of years
- Cant improve all of the players, especially those who have been playing in relegation teams rather than bring top players at the top of league 1
- PDC wants the players to toughen up
- Finishing in top 8 would still be a miracle as the majority of players still have a lot to learn
(Missed some as it cut out)
- Talked about physical condition of players coming in. They will improve but are not firing on all cylinders yet
(Missed some as it cut out)
- PDC wont give up
-6 teams have won at County ground because the players heads drop if everything doesnt go right to begin with. Also, teams are coming to get a result rather than rolling over
(Missed some as it cut out)
- Something about a player who was a chihuahua and turning into a rotweiller....
(Missed some as it cut out)

Sorry guys. Best I could do tonight.

He's gone to town on 1 player saying he's very disappointed with him and will look to replace with a loan. My money's on Roberts.

Agreed. I've been disappointed with him as well.

Let's hope he's a better loan signing than Hollands (based on tonight's performance)

Lack of creativity and urgency against a team who set up for a point. We seem to seriously struggle against teams who come here, pack the midfield and (inevitably) get the breakaway goal. I didn't feel the performance was as dire as Orient/Col U but compared to Saturday it was bollocks. Brentford well organised side who also knew how to play the game (time wasting, looking for fouls etc) and it just felt like whilst we were chasing the game we wouldn't have scored all night. I have to say Roberts was pathetic and it's time Raffa got a go once again.

Very frustrating and disappointing after Saturday.

There wasn't much between the teams. We missed our chances, they took one of theirs. Then they killed the game expertly, as frustrating as it was fair play to them for that.

While we had a couple of chances, aside from the last 10 minutes of the first half we struggled to break them down like we did against Colchester et al.

Roberts was absolute gash tonight. Needs to find form and fast. Martin and Collins are too similar for my liking, neither have much pace either. Hollands was OK, probably more combative but not got Bostock's touch on the ball.

Not quite sure what happened for the goal. We lost it and it was played forward to their #9, who got between 2 defenders. Not sure I'd blame Thompson specifically, but will no doubt be corrected by a replay.

Aside from a dodgy 10 minutes in the second half McEveley was excellent.

edit: oh and fucking hell Martin, I'd have scored that header :)

Very disappointing tonight. Thought we had turned the corner at home after Saturday but again we struggled to get going. We were actually marginally better in the first half in my opinion but we didn't create too much going forward. There was the 5 minute spell before half time where we turned the screw and at HT I thought we could go on to win it.

But in the 2nd half we lost it. We just seemed to back off and they capitalised in the first 10 minutes and then got the goal. They were very good at the back, they have to get credit for that, and I thought they were better than us in midfield as well. Our final ball was shocking tonight as well which was frustrating. Brentford deserved it in the end.

It's amazing how much better we seem to play when Williams is fit and starts. When he's out we just seem to lack anything decent going forward. He's becoming such a key player for us. I really hope he can stay fit when he comes back.

All in all another poor performance from us at home but on reflection we are still moulding together as a team and one or 2 are still settling into the side. I still think we'll come good and when we do we'll be hard to stop. Much like we were last season.

Nnnggghhh... frustrating again. Had a 10 minute spell in the first half which we needed and should/could have scored in, then proceeded to look devoid of ideas for the rest of the game. I think on reflection, a draw was a fair result, but they nicked it with one of their very few clear chances.

Points of note:
 - We got to see a foul throw!
 - Why did it take so long for the ref to book their 'keeper for time wasting when he was happy to book their sub for walking off at a leisurely pace?
 - Gary Roberts is still awful. When his terrible first touch doesn't fail, his second touch (a pass or cross) usually will.
 - Thought Bostock for Hollands looked a better substitution to make at the time, and still do
 - Chris Martin took dogs abuse from a lot of people sat around me - i thought this was harsh. He was our best striker today, and when the ball wasn't hoofed to him, he had some nice touches, created a couple of chances, and got in to good positions. Looks intelligent.
 - Rooney left wing? Massive error, assumed de Vita wasn't on the bench - turns out he was. Should have come on for Roberts.
 - Ward and Devera looked solid again, not sure what happened for the goal.
 - Ritchie largely ineffective again, as were the majority of set pieces

Think that covers it.

Wes and back 4 decent except distribution. Everyone else wank. Martin bar one shot played with his back to goal and created next to nothing. Paolos subs were terrible, Collins looked much more lively than martins. Rooney on for Roberts?! Is he having a laugh! Atleast put storey on the wing or da vita. Pissed off.

Wish we would see more of De Vita. He's been pretty good this season and yet Roberts seems to walk into the side despite being largely average. McCormack is a big miss at the back as well. He just brings the calmness and vocals that others don't.

Nice to see Paolo go all Andy King at the end and chuck Ward upfront. First time i've seen him throw the kitchen sink at it when we we've been behind in the last few minutes.

I thought Ritchie was decent. More of a threat than anyone else and swung in a few nice balls (Martins second half header for one).

Roberts was abysmal. Think there's more to come from Hollands when he gets a few games under his belt and Martin looks useful too. We looked solid at the back. Think Brentford just did a number on us. Killed the game well.

Loved it when Paolo ran in the pitch and sliced the ball!

So much for pushing on from Saturday.  Another utterly pathetic home performance, particularly second half.

Yet again far too many aimless long balls.  We were generally disorganised, clueless from corners, clueless from free kicks and clueless from throw ins.

Stupid time to replace Collins with Storey, we're defending a sodding free kick, players switch off while the sub is made and they subsequently scored as a result.  Should have taken Martin off anyway.

Hollands offered nothing in midfield and not sure why Ferry was replaced instead of him.  Ferry and Bostock played well together on Saturday, why change it?  Replacing Roberts with Rooney was also a complete waste of a sub.

Brentford had no stand out players, but were better organised and closed our players down well.
Nothing particularly positive to take from tonight.  Utter crap.

I'm sure he knows what he is doing but aside from mccormack's superb move from midfield
To defence, Paolo's minor insistence on playing people out of position is a bit annoying. Tah at midfield was almost a sick joke and why won't he give rafa more time on the wing? Surely Adam Rooney is wasted there?

Wrong subs today without doubt, as Lucien says the Rooney sub was madness De Vita should have come on and for me should start, Roberts is pretty dire at the moment.

Two tight banks of 4 from them and ran the game out very well, we seem not to have a plan B apart from putting a defender up front.

Still in the playoffs so not all bad but Paolo needs to start reading up on tactical play because it's not the first time we've not been able to break down a mediocre opposition.

Re-listened to the bits that I could:

- Basically said that several players let him down. They weren't focussed and didn't perform. We were on top without doing anything special but we didn't put our chances away.
- He praised Thompson and didn't criticise him for the mistake that cost the goal and the game
- Criticised mentality and mental toughness of the team. Some haven't learned how to be resilient while others are showing that they don't have the capacity. If we don't score early their heads drop
- He talked about players who had been relegated and spent a year in the bottom division. They improved a little but are not currently top league one players (Possibly Ferry & Ritchie from context). They need to toughen up and put in more effort. They are good players, but if they can't toughen up, they have no chance of making it at the next level
- The way we lost made him angry. We aren't going to give up, but its obvious that the players at the club need to develop before we can be consistent and successful in this division. Teams come to the County Ground and fight harder for their points than in L2. Opposition players are more experienced and determined.
- Some Swindon players are weak with their desire and ambition. Our tactics are right, but our application isn't always there. We will analyse again and try to highlight areas to the player where they can improve
- Not close to bring someone else in. He does want to bring someone in as he is very disappointed with one player who is showing no commitment, no heart and no desire. He wouldn't elaborate as to who it was, but Wise asked whether it was a winger. PDC said 'You said that'. This seemed to imply that it was Roberts, but it could equally have been Ritchie from the context of the rest of the interview.

I don't agree with this fully if i'm honest. We had numerous occasions where we got the ball out wide and into good positions but the final ball was lacking then finally when we saw a decent delivery the chance went begging. Better execution and decision making from some players tonight could have seen us get on the score sheet. I'd certainly like us to play it on the floor more though but it seems that Paolo is trying to mix it up a bit more this season. It worked very well against Yeovil but not so much tonight.

He talked about that. He said that the tactics are definitely right, but some of the players aren't following instructions. I think he was saying that we half heartedly created chances in the first half but didn't put them away. The players then lost confidence and stopped creating chances full stop.

Tactically inept performance with no-one coming out of the game with any real credit. I am now getting at a loss as to understanding how our performances at home being so good one game and the total opposite the next.

Once again a not very good Brentford side did a job on us as per the other teams that we have dropped points to, and it is a concern to me that we do not have enough nous to change things around when it happens.

Concerned also that Roberts and Ritchie have both gone backwards, Roberts knowing he will be subbed at the first mistake (as will Collins) and I am certain that it is no confidence booster as can be seen by the body language when pulled off.

Seemed to have got away with it result wise tonight but not a happy bunny at all!

We massively missed Williams tonight. When we play it long he's the only one with enough pace to get on the end of them. As others have said, Martin and Collins are too similar and quite slow. The only way we can win without Williams is to play the ball out to the wingers and get lots of crosses in (not that Roberts will do anything on current form).

Picking up from Paolo's comments I would say it is Ritchie that he is most disappointed with, probably one of the few postitions we don't have a replacement for so my money's on bringing in a right sided midfielder to kick Ritchies ass. We were ok first half but needed to score when we had a few chances just before half time. Second half they stepped up their game and we didn't. The defence wasnt  too bad apart from Thompson switching off for their goal but we created very little in the second half and never really put them under any pressure. Crappy drive home on the motorway in the pissing rain rounded off a disappointing night.

Mumbles is on the posh side of Swansea. I'm over on the East, what we lack in Hollywood A-Listers like CZJ we make up with former ginger beefcake, John Hartson.

Mumbles is posh? Always liked Cwmdu McDonalds for some reason, I think it is the stunning breakfast wrap they do :I'm a complete mofleakin Deak

Just got back to the south coast and not read back yet

Dire is the word I would use. Too much hoof and not enough on the deck.

Why change the team again after such a great victory on Saturday? Our last two big wins have been with Bostock on the pitch - why drop him? Sorry Paolo you have to take some responsibility for this and not blame it on the 4 players who you think are amateurs.

Too many poor performances. Brentford did a job on us.

The second half was just awful, only looked like getting anywhere was when Bostock was brought on, and like others have said, why was he dropped to start with, it's not as if he has started heaps of games this season.
I think Ray Charles handed out the motm this evening as well.
Was hoping that the Yeovil game would set us on a bit of a role at home, but today was two steps backwards again.
Fair play to Brentford they took their chance, a good away performance from them, they are level on points with us now.

I'd have given it him as well. Strong in the tackle and won pretty much everything, a dodgy 10 minutes mid second half aside.

He didn't have his best game, but he is still streets ahead of Roberts. I won't call Roberts a poor player - I was delighted when we signed him and I've seen him tear us to shreds single handedly for Huddersfield - he's just been so dissapointing for us. Slow, lethargic and most surprisingly showing virtually no technical ability. Bostock is dropped I can only think on the basis Hollands can get stuck in more, which is debatable. But it is Roberts, not Bostock, that is the defensive liability, constantly leaving McEveley exposed. I haven't quite worked out how he can fail to show defensively, yet not be there going forward either. I can only assume he's in the side ahead of Raffa because PDC is knows that talent is in there somewhere and needs it to show on the pitch to avoid him being another very expensive mistake. He's been that poor I wouldn't mind loaning him out somewhere if it means shedding his wage.

Am I the only one who would like paolo to be more flexible in his formation?  For instance last night when we are being outnumbered in midfield maybe switching to a 3-5-2 or a 4-2-3-1 to at atleast allow us to get a foot hold through the extra man.

Wasn't at the game as was in mid air so am just going off what I have read on here!

No you aren't the only one. I was there last night and the 4-4-2 does get a bit rigid and tiresome at times. If we played 4-5-1/4-4-3, I think it might promote a bit more football rather than hoof, and give us some extra width.

We did look a bit clueless when we needed to break them down last night.

I thought the same Flash. We played like a team destined for relegation in the 2nd half - completely devoid of any ideas. The heads seem to drop as soon as we went a goal down and we never looked like getting back into the game. PDC needs a plan B when the more organised (defensive) teams play here.

I'm still confident we'll beat Notts on Saturday!

Weren't we equally rigid in our system last year? Obviously I haven't seen us this season but it doesn't sound like much has changed apart from the quality of opposition.

We do better away from home as teams attack more and leave gaps. At home we struggle to break down defensive opponents as we no longer have the same division in class between ourselves and the opposition. At least that's my ill informed opinion based on radio and comments on here.

I think we are in for a very inconsistent season but will still be up there come May.

I think your ill informed opinion, albeit based on radio and comments on here is pretty accurate.

There is no team in this league taking it by the scruff of the neck and I think if we can hit some consistency and get over this our slightly ropey home form, we could be the team to pull away.

Once Martin and Hollands get up to speed and Williams gets himself fit and flying, we could take off in the second half of the season, which is what we did last season after all.

If we were playing well at home I'd hav some optimism that the results would start coming. A lot of players either making a pass and just admiring it rather than look to receive it again, defenders too often having no one I pass it too only foderingham or an aimless hoof or an over hit cross. Also when the defenders are heading it it just seems a blind head it as far as you can. Yes clear it but before you get the ball have an idea who is around you and put it in the general direction if a red shirt. And that bloody Rooney and Roberts words just fail me!

I disagree that the scoreline flattered us. There's a difference between 'nice' football and effective football. Of the games I've seen lately we may be playing more direct than previously under Di Canio but are still creating plenty of chances - just not taking them at home for whatever reason.

We're not as good as some would like to think we are, but we're not as bad - in terms of quality or style - as you're making out, in my opinion.

Title: Re: Swindon Town FC v Brentford FC Official Matchday Thread

But there are times to be direct and times to play it through the middle. If DiCanio was getting them to play direct why not put the bloody ball in the box when we have a corner!

FWIW I thought we looked pretty decent first half, albeit without a cutting edge till the last 10 mins or so. After the break we seemed to have lost that again a little, still playing OK, then we seemed to run out of ideas a bit when passing the ball around in front of them didn't break them down. And once they scored heads dropped and desperation kicked in. They came for a point, stifled us in doing so and managed to nick 3. It happens.

We're still 6th when all's said and done and I really don't think we're as bad as some seem to feel - think the last 15 mins or so are just what's uppermost in people's minds and is colouring the perception of the game (and for some then the general situation) overall.

Last time I checked, the season was determined over 46 games & not 1 game (unless of course it's the play-off final :) ).

Interesting stat for the saddo's out there.

Too many of our fans, have picked up the modern being ludicrously fickle virus.

We're doing Ok, in roughly our historic position, have had a couple of decent wins and some shit defeats. That's what happens if you're a Town fan.

Our recent (last 15 years or so) problem has been an inability to take this to a different level, this usually leading to a slide. That problem still remains.

I really cannot believe the attitude of some of our fans. We've been fucking shite the majority of this season for the players we have and find ourselves in sixth place, roughly the same as last year but in a higher league?? (we won the league last year by the way)

We've completely not hit our stride at all yet, yet we find ourselves a mere five points off the top. We've also come through a period of ridiculous injury struggles.

A lot has to be said for Paolo's intense training. It was exactly the same last year. We had lots of niggles early in the year with players looking tired and flat. The second half of the year the fitness shone through and we scored lots of late goals.

Last night was fucking dog-shit, granted. People want to have a little tantrum over it, I get that, I feel the same. But for fuck sake it's not the end of the world. Now's time to forget about last night and move on, and for god sake get behind the team next home game.

P.S If the constant shooting towards the Town End first half is anything to do with us then the decision maker on that needs shooting, sort it out Paolo.

Our record when the opponents score first is 16th best this season out of the 24 teams, so not great.  We have conceded first on six occasions and recovered to obtain two points.

Tranmere have the best record, having recovered 8 points on the six occasions they have gone behind.

While their Terry Christian/David Brent hybrid of a wankstain commentator was as irritating as scabies, he did say that we looked really good at times and are one of the best he's seen this season. It wasn't a house. It was a wind break, nothing but a windbreak.

She wasn't at home though, lost in France.

I sent it after the burnley game, said it wasnt austin who got us relegated, it was all the other bottling cunt wankers.

She said, 'i  have a tweet from tans, its frankly quite offensive, but he says it wasnt austins fault we got relegated'

I sent one in when we were winning at half time saying "That was a great half Fuck da di canio haterz"

They read out the first half then stopped after reading the second half, you'd though they'd proof read all their tweets rather than starting to read them all out!

Surely it's self-trolling? It'd be like trying to satirise Sarah Palin

Think it largely depends on whether they hang out under bridges waiting for goats to trippy-trap overhead.
