The covers will stop surface frost and freezing but, we have had a fairly long period of sub zero temperatures which have lowered the ground temeprature to the extent that freezing sets in to a deeper level despite covers. Imagine putting a cup of water in the freezer, next to a cup of water wrapped in a cloth. The naked cup will be frozen whilst the wrapped cup will take longer to freeze but will freeze eventually.
