I see the FairGame report will be out in May. Probably summarised by 'the club are doing their best' ive noticed quite a few other L2 clubs have released their accounts and our loss actually looks 'palatable' in comparison. Think Vale lost over 5 million and Fleetwood last night announced a 9.3 million loss!!

Changing the club nickname to 'The Freeloaders' would also be more believable

Salford City lost £5.3M in 23/24 taking total losses for their new owners to over £28M since they took over.

Doncaster Rovers lost over £3M in the same period taking their total losses to £38.5M!

Fleetwood Town lost £9.3M in 23/24, taking total losses to over £40M!

Ridiculous for Div 4 teams.

This info is from Keiran Maguire's Twitter.

How can clubs even go on operating like that?

I assume - like us, the debt is all ‘director loans’ but even then all these football clubs can’t have rich owners with bottomless pits of cash who are just happy to spend millions & millions each year just to keep a 4th division football club going…

…and even if they actually did why would the bastards do it anyway? Madness

It was also be curious to see how much their ‘admin expenses’ are.

Sadly I suspect at some stage the whole league pyramid is going to go bang in a massive way with clubs going bust left right and centre, just looking at the examples listed above the Class of 92 seem to have pretty much lost interest in Salford so they are treading water at best, Donny are owned by the guy who made millions selling Keepmoat so he may be prepared to carry on funding big losses, but he is also 82 and who knows what his kids may want to do, and Fleetwood had the change of ownership from father to son after Father got sent down for a prolonged period for fraud, so hardly stable albeit I'm not an accountant so the club making massive losses may have ben a useful part of that....

How are clubs in this league making such big losses? When playing budgets average £2.5m, and let's face it that will be the biggest expense, how do admin expenses exceed this?

Depends on what other ‘activities’ clubs are up to that offsets such losses.

If it was just us you would probably just nod, wink & say “admin expenses”.
But the fact that it applies to pretty much everyone else too suggests that is just the cost of running a football club.
I guess the £2.5m is first team playing budget, so you need to add coaching, admin/office staff, ticket office costs, energy & water (I’m assuming floodlights aren’t cheap to run), policing & stewarding.
As I say if it was just us you would be sceptical, but it clearly isn’t.

I still think they are making their money in other ways, probably ones that don’t go through the books in a normal way

Not just in L2 as well, my local team Yeovil announced operating losses of nearly £2.9m for last season, a season when they won the Conf South with record crowds....also paying record wages.

I have been told our £2.5m budget includes coaching/fitness staff in the same budget. Our actual player budget will be a fair bit under that £2.5m figure quoted.

Carlisle confirmed that they have moved away from a “self-financing model” and are dependent on owners for funding...

https://www.newsandstar.co.uk/sport/25052426.carlisle-united-may-need-another-4m-owners-next-season/

Albeit they are apparently poised for greatness..... https://www.newsandstar.co.uk/sport/25052432.carlisle-united-poised-greatness-says-tom-piatak/

What is happening there seems to reinforce that its having a fecking clue is possibly more important than having cash alone...
