Govt says National Service will give kids "opportunities".

It can be military or civilian service - but only military will be paid.

So only kids from wealthy families can do civilian.

So only they will get opportunities. Poor kids will be digging latrines and being shot at.

What a load of tosh. It’s to give life experience and I don’t see what the issue is they have it in many countries and even France do it. Why always are those on here having a pop at the well off - many of them have worked very hard to get where they are BTW

Very much doubt it'll be for many people at all.

Certainly not a Swedish model, though even there not everyone does it these days.

It certainly can be beneficial for some - I've seen that with Swedish relatives. But not all.

In Denmark though there is so much more of a social contract that the youth have with the country, rather than here where they're treated with such contempt. In the Denmark solution, they are paid and once they get back they have free university education to continue on with.

Here it will be unpaid Labour, little prospects afterwards because the armed forces have been completely depleted by this government and extortionate university fees if they wish to continue on with education. And after all that, they'll probably still keep being told they're the problem. What I would do for this country to be ran anything like Denmark.

There are three guarantees if this notion was to go through {it won't}:

a} It'll cost way more than any government national service elsewhere and will conveniently probably line the pockets of some chums who provide the setting up of the service via some ''private'' entity - that will appear overnight {never seen that before have we}

b} The taxpayer will have to fund the whole lot

c} It'll be an absolutely wank and disorganised chaotic program

They'll blame it on one or all of:

a} Nurses

b} Police Officers

c} Firefighters
