I'm only talking about my experiences from sunny Swindon😁
My apologies. I’ve never lived here so can’t offer any local opinion. That said when I would visit my grandparents in Moredon we used to have a treat from a chippy, I wish my memory was better, I can’t even tell you what area it was in, but it was quite close to where the drive through McDonalds now is, not that far from the station/football ground.

I think there was a chippy many years ago along station road close to where the White House pub & White House bride was which is roughly where you are talking about

Chips from a Chinese can be a glorious thing. When I lived in Leith our local Chinese would be visited regularly for a portion of chips. Heaven!!
The history of chips from the Chinese is interesting..... I'm going back into the 60's now, when it seemed that there was a surge of Chinese chippies in Swindon, however possibly my imagination.... the consensus seemed to be that their more vegetable based oils, produed a lighter chip than the industrial scale lard of the British chippie.... throw in such exotics as a battered sausage and spring rolls and away you went.

I've always found them soggy so they obviously cook them in different oils or at a lower temperature maybe

I can remember back around 1970 getting chips from Roper’s in Devizes Road, after a few bevvies in the Cross Keys. Roper’s is now a Chinese takeaway (has been for many years) but OMG Roper’s chips were truly ropey - floppy, dripping fat, not a crunchy bit in sight.

Me and my mates had buggered off elsewhere by then, just in case you were thinking it was me making it a rough joint!! We went in there around 1970-72, mainly, and they didn’t seem to mind you being under age. Beer wasn’t up to much, though

No not at all plus you're probably 8 years or more older than me so I would have been at school when you were around!
