They lost 5-2. And no it's not the same at any age or level, once they get a bit older maybe but this was an U11s game, 1st/2nd round of the cup between an U11 Div 2 and Div 3 side. Even if they had been in with a shout of winning, makes no odds. If, as a coach, you're that desperate to win an U11s game, that you'd leave a 10 year old to just sit and watch his mates playing, humiliating him in front of his team-mates, you need to have a long hard look at why you're coaching. Because it sure as shit isn't for the good of the kids in the team.
EDIT: this may of course be a bit harsh on the particular bloke in question. I've no doubt he gives up huge amounts of his own time for no reward to coach kids and without people like him, loads of kids wouldn't get to play any football. But to extract the issue into the hypothetical, I'd still say it's wrong to take a 10 year old kid to a game and not let him play.
It really is the same regardless of age or level of football. The manager makes his choices and inevitably someone is affected negatively by it. It may be harsh and you may not agree with decisions made but that's the way it is. Right or wrong it's an opinion and the manager has the one that counts. It happens from u6's down the park to the champions league. Every single team I can think of has had someone who is unhappy and feels unfairly treated. In the case you mention it's understandable. Seems very harsh.

It's interesting the debate my comments have caused, particularly as my original post was about an unreliable builder and I went off at a tangent replying to Batch!
We know the coach well, he lives round the corner and we've always got on. However, his competitive nature has caused problems in the past that I know about through the grapevine. He ran the school football team for a couple of years when his older son was still at primary school and was involved in a number of incidents with parents over treating kids unfairly before the school asked him to step down.
He did come round to see us after the game, apologised and agreed it hadn't been fair. Didn't really explain it satisfactorily to be honest, but it wasn't worth getting into a big row about. He knows we were pissed off and seemed quite embarassed, so left it at that.

My guess is that being a kids' football coach is a pretty thankless task.
That's all I have to say about it really.

Best thing about this site for me is how debates develop. Always has been. It's nice to actually read something and want to post something in response. Most of the time I can't be arsed anymore.

Completely agree with that and always enjoy reading your views on this topic as I know you've been there and done it. FWIW, I blame Batch too.

The wrong thread to put this I guess, but having seen pictures of the F1 crash today, Bianchi is going to be one very lucky boy if he recovers ok. Crossed fingers etc...

I'll let you know tomorrow! To be honest as long as he enjoys it, improves and doesn't look hopelessly off the pace I'll be happy!
Seems to have gone quite well then Well done, Batch Jr!

Seems to have gone quite well then Well done, Batch Jr! Could have been worse thanks. Hit the post and missed a sitter too! Todays opposition are struggling a bit this season, so he knows it's going to get much tougher. Pewsey in the cup will put his feet back on the ground.

Thanks. Did your son play, or did you draw the line last week?
