Every generation has had it's bad times, it wasn't a barrel of laughs in the early 70's or early 80's. Maybe part of the prpblem now though is people's expectations? When I was growing up very few people from a working class background expected to own their own home, or attend university. Oh and DMR, I don't think you were born with a silver spoon in your mouth, but I do think you had privileges that many people haven't. Dunno why, maybe it's my warped perception of you as a spoilt little cunt.

I was born in the 50s and compared to today it was a paradise
No it was shit...now obviously I don't know your particular conditions, but I remember a time, when there was no central heating in the house...I could visit family in Swindon and the Somerset coalfield, where the there was no bathroom you had a communal tin bath in front of the fire. Labour saving devices like washing machines, fridges and vacuum cleaners, were the stuff of dreams. Social attitudes to things such as sexuality, gender and religion remained firmly in the 19th Century and weren't much fun.

I could spend all day outside playing with my mates with no worries about perverts or getting run over by a car. There was no peer pressure to keep up with the Jones' I had a fucking good state education. I had GPs who made house visits I could jack my job on Friday and get another one by Monday. Yeah, sure we had no central heating or a car or a phone or snazzy holidays but would I prefer to be growing up now - no way, Jose

This is all a bit pompous. I'm 25, I've got a shit degree from a shit Uni - but my career is (and I choose my words carefully) flying.
There are opportunities out there for those who can seize them.
Are you cabin crew?

But it wasn't all good living then. I remember once getting run over by a penny farthing and, on another occasion, had my hoop and stick stolen while I was in a country pub. It took me ages to walk home!

Obviously you've no idea of what 50's post war austerity was like...rationing, national service and grim working conditions, in dangerous heavy industries.
Was that the same 1950's where " you never had it so good"?

Perverts were among us back in the 50's...my mother would issue warnings about them though...don't talk to strange men etc...what to do if a problem ie kick to the goolies and run home, or to a mates house if closer. She also wouldn't let me join the cubs regarding it as a breeding ground for paedos. Agree about the cars though.
