I know how lucky I am. If I was 10 years younger, I'd be furious. It's not fair.
I'm glad some people who are not in the low-20's bracket understand just how fucking ridiculous our situation is right now. We're screwed over whatever we do. I've got a first class degree in a an actual, proper academic subject that ten years ago would have given me an path straight into where I want to be. As it is I'm currently living at home, working for just over minimum wage at a dead-end job. For the forseeable future, that is where I'm going to be. It's a fucking disgrace, and will cause nothing but shit further down the line when all the money the government could previously raise for our aging population has decreased massively because the current population in their 20's are going to be about 4/5 years behind where they should be in the job market. As far as Estate/Letting Agents and fees go, I was with Foxtons in East London and that was fun: "We need to charge you roughly £600 for admin fees etc., and require a deposit of 6 months rent, and you're going to be tied to one energy company for your entire tenancy, and there are inventory costs and cleaning to be done too." Fuck that. I put down 2 months rent, got her down to just over £200 for all admin/inventory/professional cleaning (which I technically paid for, but as it never got done before we moved in I took pictures, moaned repeatedly and got my money back), and got to use the energy company that I wanted. If you feel intimidated by companies like that, they're happy. As it was, I had a bit of experience with letting agents and am used to looking over contracts and going 'no, no, no, definitely no' with a black marker. If you dig your feet in you can alter it before you sign and get some money off, especially if it's somewhere that is looking for a tenant quickly- which most places in London are. The most ridiculous one I've seen is that with an agent in London, you can pay to have the property professionally cleaned before moving in apparently...... but if you don't have it professionally cleaned when you move out they charge you. Double bubble! Arseholes.
A lot of the time they don't bother either. Just pocket the fee.

I do see the attraction of living in London and having that lifestyle, but if that's the choice you make then you have to accept that you're going to have to live with the high rents and high property prices.

I have no particular problem with the rent being high, it's the fees that take the piss.

Obviously. It's more the fact there are so many grasping greedy cunts charging things that have nothing to do with rent or property prices.

This is all a bit pompous. I'm 25, I've got a shit degree from a shit Uni - but my career is (and I choose my words carefully) flying. There are opportunities out there for those who can seize them.

You've missed the important bit about there actually being "opportunities out there for those who can seize them" though.
Now come on, those shelves will not stack themselves.

proper academic subject Which one? Getting a job is not just about your degree, if your stacking shelves or waiting tables then maybe you need to try and change your aproach to the job market.

Today's younger generation of ethnic English, expect everything on a plate for them, and are generally not prepared to work too hard. The lucky ones fall back on their parents, the unlucky ones fall back on petty crime, anti social behaviour and the welfare state.

Fall back on the parents? I know what you're angling at Reg (Herthab thinks I born with a silver spoon in my mouth too - wrong), but I haven't lived at home since 2008, and I don't work for my parents. They certainly didn't promote me twice in 26 months - I think you'll find my MD did that. Through hard graft and the best sales figures in the sales team.

I am really struggling... I'm applying for loads, tailoring each application, yet getting nowhere. I failed an interview the other week because they just didn't think I'd enjoy it - no other feedback, other than praise?!
Failing to get interviews for the most basic of jobs, is also annoying... we're talking terrible money, and the only requirements being "can work to deadlines and as part of a team". My CV is excellent, with 8 years high level experience before the last 3 years which resulted in a First Class degree. Yet no one can tell me why I don't get put forward, they just ignore my emails and calls when asking for feedback. I can only think in these situations that I'm too risky (re. staying put) as I'm too qualified?!
It's no fun at the moment...
