If (big if) the Scots do vote to remain in the union post 2014, it's fair to assume that there will be a greater level of devolution than there is now.  The other thing that it's fair to assume is that there will have to be more there on the table for the English who, quite rightly, feel as if we are getting a rough deal at the moment.

All of which, in my view, means that we would move towards a more federal structure in future.  In Germany, the US, Switzerland - to name just a few countries - different parts of the country set their own taxes and their own priorities.  There's nothing unusual in that.  The key piece of the jigsaw that's missing is that England needs some bodies that look after its local interests in the way that that Holyrood/Welsh Assembley look after the interests of Scotland and Wales.

I know not everyone will share this view, but my own take is that the common interests we have with the other parts of the UK massively outweigh the differences.  A complete split, in my view, would be a real shame.  But a federal structure, with the constituent nations of the UK setting their own agendas in agreed areas, is something that I think could work quite well.

Exactly,i agree but it will never happen mainly i think because of the forces and the defence of the UK.

And lets be honest in two world wars the union was as strong as it ever has been, the Irish and English fought side by side even when the Irish problem was raising its ugly head.

I'm saying that a greater level of devolution of powers away from Westminster to the constituent nations (including England) is more or less inevitable.  What you call it is not really an issue for me...but the devolution train is pretty much unstoppable, I'd say.  And once you go sufficiently far down the path to devolution, you have a federal structure.  That's all I'm saying.

Not sure where the Republic of Ireland would come in to this.  Not part of my thinking.

Only asking.

I agree that power should be devolved as much as possible to a constituent nation level (especially England). I only threw a united Ireland into the equation as a side thought.

Funilly enough, this level of devolution has been advocated by a certain political party that shall not be named for at least the last two General elections.

The problem is though, that until the UK as a whole has extracted itself of from the EU, pursuing this course could only make it easier in the long run for the Euro-fanatics to use the divide and rule tactic to destroy any opposition to their wholesale takeover of Europe.

After the UK, there are only a couple of countries currently in the 27 who even pretend to stand up to the Franco-German takeover.

I might be wrong, but aren't those issues of public spending over which the Welsh Assembly and Scottish Parliament have control?  As I understand it, the Welsh and Scots have a budget for the issues over which they have control, and they have decided to provide free prescriptions.  Their choice - Westminster could do the same.

University tuition fees never would have been passed without the support of Scottish Labour MPs in Westminster.  You can't have a little bit of devolution, by starting the process it made it likely that the union would break up, and they're a moaning bunch of bastards anyway so I don't care if they fuck off.  We should keep the Welsh though, salt of the earth the Welsh(most will probably disagree).

I have recently moved back to Wales.  Lived here for seven years previously.  That was Cardiff - now Wrexham.  Every single story people have heard about how mean spirited and unfriendly Welsh people are is completely, utterly, ridiculously wrong.  Lovely country, lovely people.  I'm from Swindon, but I've always felt just as at home in Wales.

There is good and bad wherever you go, whilst doing a course up in mid wales a group from Swansea was also on the course. I got on fine with the locals in the hotel and pubs but they seemed to really dislike the southern welsh.

If Scotland vote to remain in the Union, we should hold our own referendum to kick them out - i'm not really sure why Cameron is concerned they might leave (which they won't).

We've got a bunch of cunts who want no part of us but they get more than their fair share so effectively we're bribing them to stay - how the fuck does that work.
Ardiles - Salmond and i want the same thing Scottish independence although we're approaching it from different angles. I'd very happilly see the whinging bastards go. Let them seek their fortune and good luck to them.

Indeed. I found the Welsh largely nice people, much like the English and the sweaties. But you do meet some with a bit of a sense of "small man syndrome" or in this case "small country syndrome" every now and again.

If you take the sporting element out of the equation I have found the Welsh very welcoming, it works both ways so when ive been on the other side of the bridge Ive made an effort to talk to the locals. Some of the most spectacular scenery in the Bitish Isles.
