My wife passed away last night after losing her battle with MND. A truly awful illness that within 18 months took her from someone who was able to watch games from the DRS to someone who lost the use of all her limbs, couldn't talk or eat and eventually took away her ability to breathe. At 54 it's far too young for her to have left us, bye bye sweetheart  Sad new. My thoughts are with you and your family. May she rest in peace. |

Brilliant player, one of the best I ever saw play in his prime as I was a bit too young to see Best, Pele and Beckenbaur. He was a very heavy smoker and only had lung cancer since October, but he has a heart bypass back in about 91/92 so the warnings were there then. RIP. |

I hadn't seen that he was ill, will hit both Holland and Barcelona hard as he was like a god there. We have had players good enough to have moves named after then, the Flint Hoof and the Keith Scott mis-control to name but two. |

Cruyff, with Rinus Michels, and the Dutch teams of the 70's revolutionised football. Cruyff then took the philosophy to Barca, and set up the dynasty, which we see today. It's very difficult to convey just how sexy those Dutch teams were, kind of capturing the zeitgeist of a new generation of Europeans emerging from the very long shadow of post war reconstruction. Sadly the Dutch squandered that legacy when Bert van Marwjik's lot tried to kick the Spanish off the park in the 2010 WC final. |

Used to practice doing the cruyff turn for hours when I was a kid.
Only time I saw him play in the flesh was at Dennis bergkamp's testimonial though. A proper football legend.

Very sad news. The 74 WCF is the first one I properly remember. I was annoyed at the result, Cruyff was a real icon at that time, like Pele and Best of years before. |
