Did you do the road of death into La Paz?

Yep.  The nuns sitting at the back of the bus with their rosary beads and praying out loud for the entire descent in to La Paz didn't fill me with confidence.  That was the 2nd most terrifying travel experience I had in La Paz.

The 1st most terrifying travel experience I had in La Paz was the take off on the flight to Lima.  The air was so thin that the plane took several minutes to gain the first 1000 feet in height.  Brown trouser time, and no mistake.

I did see a great game of Bolivian First Division football though.
