Title: Ice, ice, baby
Post by: Talk Talk on Sunday, December 20, 2009, 22:37:40
Jeez. Last night was a nightmare when it rained and then froze. We were out at a do at the Marriott and tried to get a taxi at about half twelve. V-Cars were blunt. "We are fully booked". We were stood outside with some people and one of them worked for another taxi company and managed to get us one.

Stepping out of the car onto our road was viscous. Sheet ice. Black like a nigger's armpit. I told the taxi driver to take it easy just in case he skidded into one of our cars.

This morning the road was even worse. As we live on the bottom of a hill it was like the Olympic ski jump at Garmisch except going in the wrong direction.

My good lady went round her sister's for her birthday and slid down the slope into the kerb by her house. Had to be pushed back up the hill.

I have left my car at the car park at the top of the road tonight. The Fosse Way may well be a right bastard in the morning. Warwick here I come. Or not. Not looking forward to it.

The main roads are fine. Residential streets have been like ice rinks today though.

The Town Centre (much as I hate it I visit it once a year to get Joy's Christmas present) was disgraceful today. The whole bloody place was icy and dangerous. I thought I paid Council Tax to get some salt and grit on the pavements. Wankers.

Really? I rang up V Cars at 1am last night for a cab from Old Town and they turned up within 10 minutes.

I honestly can't remember the last time I didn't get a cab from them within 20 minutes but it was at least a couple of years ago.

Perhaps it had quietened down by then. We rang every number we could (after consulting the Yellow Pages on reception). In the end we booked two taxis from every firm - ooops...

My daughter was at Liquid at 3:30am and they had to wait half an hour for one at that time in the morning. Perhaps they like your face Jonny.

There are plenty of things which are black, no need to resort to casual racism. Obviously done to provoke a reaction.

<sigh Si>

Why is it that an expression that was fine twenty years ago is no longer 'acceptable'? Fuck it - I haven't got anything against anybody of any race, creed or religion (as long as they leave me alone). I'm sure black people still call whites 'honkeys' or worse. And I bet you also call the Welsh 'sheep shaggers' even though you are amongst them now. 'Jocks'? 'Taffs'? 'Pakis'? Get a grip.

Ok then, try 'as black as a Yorkshire miner's helmet'? Is that more or less suitable?

IT'S JUST A FUCKING EXPRESSION, OK?

Why not try asking a black person, you complete fucking moron.

Tomorrow, find twenty black people, and ask them if they find that phrase offensive. Find Ten. Find one.

I repeat, you are a complete fucking moron.

Twenty years ago was 1980. It was not acceptable then.

You are a complete fucking moron.

Stalking my posts then, eh?

No, I don't profess to know that much about football to be honest as I am relatively new to it. Pardon me for being involved. I do support Swindon Town though, unless that is unacceptable because I haven't been attending for the last 40 years. You obviously have though and therefore that makes you a far superior person to me and your opinion carries far greater weight. Yeah, ok.

"25% Football, 80% Bollocks" - just in case you missed it.

Indeed I did. I think that that comment effectively sums you up my friend. You know nothing about me, my life, work or interests.

It was 1989 to be fair...

It is just an expression.  You can't have it both ways, if you don't like then sheep-shaggers then any other expression referring to a group of people should also leave you speechless...  I'm not condoning racism, but how PC are we going to go?  This is the sort of attitude that's rephrased "baa baa black sheep" to "baa baa farm sheep"....

Walrus did it first. Call him an hilarious twat as well. I feel particularly relaxed this evening for a change, having had a good weekend and a 2-1 win. So I'm not going to get too uptight. However, I think that you have a tiny penis and trouble getting women. It's probably a good idea if you top yourself real soon.

Language like that isn't acceptable Talk Talk. I don't care if it was 20+ years ago, we're not living in the 80's or god forbid even further back in time. Because i live in the now and not the 80's I've never lived in a time when it was ever acceptable, so i find it offensive. And not because i'm PC, but because i would never use words of that nature to describe friends, who i know wouldn't be happy.

Don't cry for me, DMR. I know exactly what I am doing  :)

We've gone too far down a road where I see my children being indoctrinated to be thoughtless and unquestioning. While there are still some of us older people around who remember what it was like before the Righteous became powerful then the status quo will get questioned given the opportunity.

I think you're asking if I speak Welsh, which I don't. Welsh is a scary language, I've worked at some places with Welsh speakers and they occasionally throw in many English words as there are no Welsh words for what they are trying to say. It makes everything sound very odd.

I'm surprised TT hasn't laid the blame for this cold weather squarely at the government's door.

After all the Chinese have shown what can be achieved with a bit of meteorological meddling.

 http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/worldnews/article-1224475/China-overdoes-cloud-seeding-end-drought--blankets-Beijing-snow.html

Think we had a thread a while back (arriba)  about the MoD's efforts in Devon...they've got to be doing something about climate change.

Nope not going. After the snow last night GWR is reporting that the roads around Swindon are pretty bad. Two accidents on the westbound M4 as the outside lane is a sheet of ice. Same on Great Western Way, Highworth Road, Common Platt round the corner from me. Looking at the sky outside I reckon there's more on the way.

Back to bed for an hour I reckon then start work at 9am in the armchair  :)

No snow at all down here but the roads are like an ice rink, most public services are cancelled, no busses till at least 11.

I hate ice, went out to start the car and its -5 degrees out there and my hand brake had frozen on.

Hateful weather.

We must be neighbours. :)

I went out this morning and with a broom cleared loads of snow from around my flat, this then led to what remained becoming sheet ice and clearly worse than snow. So then i emptied 2 containers of salt over everywhere turning it all to water.

My problem is now, how much salt insures that the water won't later return to ice? What's the perfect salt to water ratio where i know that none of the water will freeze again and i haven't created something that Health and Safety will have nightmares over? Should i buy more salt? Is it ok as it is?

When i first learned to drive, it snowed shortly afterwards and my Dad, who was a go-karting champ and amateur rally driver in his younger days, wanted me to go out and learn how to control slides and what not in the snow.

He took me to a car park and we spent hours doing hand break turns and under steering and over steering so i got an idea of what to expect. It was ace.

Anyway, because of this new found confidence, i went out and had a fucking ball, me and some mates were in my car sliding everywhere, i was like a pig in shit. So i went around a mates and explained he's got to come out as well; we're having a riot sliding around bends and what not.

So he gets in his car, and within 10 metres of his front door, understeers around the first corner and into the front of his neighbours car. His car stayed at his house after that. :)

It's ace as well to find an empty car park and leave your handbrake slightly on, then drive around. This way the backend is always loose and you can have soooo much fun. (If it's front wheel drive of course.)

What is it with SBC and gritting ?

They should be gritting the main pavements around the town, but of course they don't, walking along Fleming Way - a main road that the busses stop on - this morning I managed to slip over on some ice and crack my head, walked into work with blood running down the back of me, once cleaned up had to then go back into town to purchase a new shirt as I could not stay in a blood soaked shirt all day, a nice start to the day, all because the council could not grit one of the main walkways in the town.

I used to know a kidder who had a big old house in Hartley Whitney, which he shared with his sis, who was fittus maximus.  He used to hold a NYE bash late 70's early 80's, and it always seemed to be snowing or iced up when I had to find my way there. Worth making the effort though as never failed to pull.

Went out earlier and it was a fucking nightmare. I had to pull away in 3rd gear because the car wouldn't play ball in the first 2. Then when coming back home, i was coming down the hill, at an extremely slow speed (5mph or so), because you could see it was like ice. I dabbed the brakes and no matter what i did it just slid with any attempt at braking using brakes, so missed the junction!

I then had the fun of driving back up. I only went out to buy dishwasher salt for my path. 9KGs thank you! :)

Wife drove home from Gosport yesterday, left at 2pm arrived home at 11.30pm - 9.5 hours. She luckily got off the M3 near Basingstoke at 3pm. 2,000 cars were abandoned in Basingstoke last night. Reading was a total grid lock as well my daughter had to abandon her car and walk to a friends, bus routes closed and many trains cancelled.

The good samaritans in Aborfield who were by the road side pushing cars up hill and serving piping hot tea and coffee to stranded motorists. Well played lads.

Not suprised about Basingstoke. It once took me 2 hours to make what is normally a 10 minute trip in Basingstoke, and that was for < 1cm snow.

I liked the Wycombe John Lewis letting people sleep in their display beds for the night,

I'm sure black people still call whites 'honkeys' or worse. And I bet you also call the Welsh 'sheep shaggers' even though you are amongst them now. 'Jocks'? 'Taffs'? 'Pakis'? Get a grip.

Honkeys? Very 1970s.  We're called spooks now.  I like it.

I also like being called a limey by the yanks but then again, I'm at peace with my Englishness and feel no middle class need to apologise for it

Sorry about your car, but if you're ok then that's the most important thing.
