Title: Please Start Giving a Shit
Post by: STFC_Gazza on Monday, March 2, 2009, 09:22:49
So Tomorrow is a huge game for us. Anything other than a win will not be good enough, It could get very nasty in the stands tomorrow if we lose with chants of “you don’t know what your doing” and “your not fit to wear the shirt” lets hope it doesn’t come to this but our players need to get their heads out of their asses. Its time the players (apart from our abck 4 and Coxy) start giving a shit.  >:(

Sorry i cannot agrre with that. There is  big difference between not giving a shit and simply not being good enough bar Kanu i would say very player has given the effort the last month or so but the quality is whats missing.

I am referring to Saturday more than anything I suppose. Robson-Kanu is sort of like McNamee, Good in a good side I think but crap in a crap side, mainly because he cannot play to his strengths,.  Apart from Paynter and our back 4 saturday, No on elooked as if they were interested. DW said almost as much in his post match interview.

getting on the players' backs tomorrow isn't going to help.

I think it's going to be  a close game and we're have to be patient, and that goes for players and fans. Think we'll win, but patience will be a virtue. Whether you think the players give a sh*t or not, getting on their backs tomorrow night will be counter productive. Slating them on here is fine – and I agree some are not pulling their weight – but not when they need us.

Like we've said, it's these games against the bottom clubs that matter, so win them and we're ok.  Regardless of whether we should/could have won Saturday, Tranmere are good at home, so it's these games we have to win.

Post by: Colin Todd on Monday, March 2, 2009, 10:59:15
I didnt go to Tranmere, but from what I've seen since DW has taken over the effort has been there most of the time. We were crap against Hartlepool, but they tried.

To be honest even under Malpas, most games the players put in a decent shift. we just couldnt defend for shit and lost as a consequence.

I think the typically English buzzwords of "passion & commitment" are over used and over rated as reason for crapness.

The 2 main reasons we are near the bottom is that we spent half of the season conceeding 2 goals a game on average and we have spent the whole season being unable to hold on to leads and conceeding last minute winners / equalisers.  Neither of which have anything to do with passion or commitment, its about ability, composure and an element of luck.

Our players dont seem massivly passionate or commited to me. But neither are they particually uncommited either. they are just normal.

Not saying "I AM GOING TO SLATE THE PLAYERS" I wouldn't boo the players etc during a match anyway. Just saying they need to give a shit tomorrow and get a result otherwise it could get very nasty indeed by some fans. that said being a midweek game against shit opposition it wont be as bad as a Saturday would be in my mind. I hope we get a result and the last 2 games were just "a blip". Cheltenham are shit, they aer in turmoil off the pitch its a game we really should be winning.

Get beaten with a lacklustre performance and last minute winner for them normally isnt it?

i think we will win comfortably tomorrow.but fans shouldn't get carried away about it like they did after the scunthorpe game,as there is a long way to go yet.we have 3 home gaems on the trot now and i think we need to take 6 points from those matches.i'm thinking we might get 4 or 5 though

we'll win tomorrow. I just think it might be frustarting cos they'll stick 10 men behidn the ball.

We don't have 3 home games on the trot. Next tuesday is Colchester away, isn't it?

Luckily for us, the teams below have been even worse. We have been pretty poor all season and never dropped into the bottom 4 luckily. Once you get in there it will be a battle to get out. If we get 3 or 4 more wins we are “probably” ok as we will get a couple of draws along the way. Massive cull in the Summer and playoffs next season! ;)

yeah you're right.thought we had 3 on the bounce for some reason?
ok then, 4 points from 2 games is a must, 6 would be a bonus

I think the most we'll get is 4 points from these two games.

We've then got two tough away fixtures, so if we fuck up tomorrow we could well be in the drop zone after Leeds.

Yes. followed by Leeds away. Two tricky games, hence why 3 points are important tomorrow!

Cheltenham are playing for snookers now and draws won't be enough. They need to get 3 points and so I reckon this could be an open game.

We also have to remmber that we have pissed of the football god and therefore we will not have any luck hence all these last minute goals. We are being punished by the football god. A human scafrice will apeasie him! who will give themselves up to die?

First on Garys OP I cant imagine our fans chanting anything!! although I can see Boos all round.

I dont give a shit if the players give a shit, as long as they win fucking games. If they all hate Swindon, hate the fans and hate me but win games I'm fine with that.

So far this season I've always said we wont go down but now I am worried and anything less than a win against Cheltenham and I'd be very much swayed into the we're going down camp. Which would be shit, without wanting to sound like a spoilt child one season in L2 was enough for me and I wont be back for a second one.

So, I think my point is....just win games....

As much as i want us to win loads of games, i think i just feel better about losing if it's on the back of 100% commitment and effort. I want to see crunching tackles, people actually shooting, players lunging desperately to get onto any crosses we might manage to finally get in on the odd occassion, 22 man brawls if one of our own gets wronged... just some sign of life really.

I think its more down to our incompetence than the footballing god - albeit Hartlepool was down to referee incompetence. We're not unlucky - just plain crap.

Nail hit on head, Exactly my point really… The team who went down in 2005/06 were shit BUT they worked hard. We knew they would lose most games but would put in 100% effort. The players were crap and we were appalling but at least you knew you would get 100% effort. Of course its good to win, but losing consistently is easier to stomach if the players show a bit of grit and work their bollocks off. This team talent wise is by far better than that squad or perhaps they are not as good as we think? Who knows… but in any case, A bit of effort please lads!

We have 14 cup finals starting Tuesday. If we win our mini league against those around us we will be alright. I'm sure if the lads give 110% we'll start climbing the league table and everyone will be over the moon, anything less and I'll be sick as a parrot. It's still early doors to be talking about relegation, even if we don't get a result Tuesday.

Yours,

Cliché Man.

In all seriousness, we really do need 14 'battling like your life depends on it' games.  WE are clearly not too good to go down.

ok IN MY OPINION then.... Apart cfrom the 7-0 loss. The players WERE SHIT. so that includes Whalley, Shakes, etc , BUT Even though they were shit, I thought
They tried. Ok Shakes would go nowhere near goal but they would run about etc… I find this season we stand around a bit too much. Whalley was shit but tried, Paul Smith was ok but injured. We didn’t have a real manager that season who had any experience so we couldn’t get any decent players in due to the penny pinching upstairs at the time. My main point was you can accept a loss (well I can) if the effort is there and for whatever reason we don’t seem to gel, are there too many egos? No one cares? Morale low? Who knows only the players know why really… But I saw shit players the year we went down but for the most part the effort was there. Not many fans were on their backs, Ok perhaps this was partly down to the fact we had not been told “championship in 3 years” etc. Most knew at Barnsley that season we would be crap. Obviously I saw something different. I saw more effort from that team combined. That’s not to say this year we have not seen any effort, its just the same 4 or 5 who consistently put the effort in.

The Swindon Team is full of shit,
The Swindon Team is full of shit,
Full of shit, Greer and Coxy,
The Swindon Team is full of shit

Don't see it catching on.

I'm with Lucien and what I think Gazza was trying to say before he got lost in the rose-tinted spectacles of our "valiant battling relegation fight" (????) last time round - for example, if we'd lost at Leicester, I'd still have come away happy because what we saw was a team giving it their all and playing some great football. And that's what I pay to see. Doesn't necessarily mean they're not trying the rest of the time, but we've not seen enough of that kind of spirit this season.

PS This is my OPINION and as such it trumps all other arguments, especially Ben's

as a bloke in his 20's who plays football, i'm surpised you dont play on saturdays at the moment.it beats the shit on offer at the county ground for sure.when i played i still saw a fair chunk of town games, just not as regularly.

Because without a job I dont play much 5 a side anymore (used to play about 6 times a week, sometimes three times in a day) because I cant justify spending between £4-£5 a time.

The pounds are flying on (6 in the last month for a skinny fucker like me) and im incredible unfit by my standard. I wouldnt last more than 15 minutes at the moment. I did pre-season with a Saturday team in the summer, infact I think i'm even signed on for them - just never played because I go and watch Town?!

Exactly. Gazza - you've done nothing but spout bollocks in this thread. Arnt you one of the people who solely blame cureton for deliberatly missing easy chances in order to get a free transfer? Fucking commited that is.

Thats me :D and I stand by it....he wanted a free transfer to Colchester the only way he could get it was if we went down

I see Gazzas point slightly, some of our player did put the effort it. Ifil has always tried but ultimately he was poor that season. Ricky Shakes despite being the worst football I have ever seen* he was never a lazy player. Migz was always a 100%er but Iffy didnt like him. Neale McDermott was slow as fuck but always put in a good shift despite having no connection to the club, we all remember the Bristol City celebration. Rory Fallon, although probably playing for a move. I loved watching a 16 year old Jutkiewicz play towards the end of that season because he worked his bollocks off and put the others to shame, I remember his first start away at Scunthorpe he had to be taken off after about an hour because he was practically dead he had chased everything and the Scunthorpe defenders knew they had been in a fucking game, you could hear the collective sigh of relief as he went off.

Sadly, 100% isnt always good enough. You could play myself, bennett, si pie, samdy & pook in we'd all put in a 100% (well maybe Bennett wont!!!) but it wouldnt be any good because we're all shit (compared to L1 standard)

Effort alone wont keep us up you need a bit of talent as well and as the seasons gone on I've come to realise our players dont have that talent. Of course i'd rather see us scrap and lose than just lose but effort isnt the key - we need a bit of quality as well.

Fabian Brandy on loan from Manchester United is banging in the goals for Hereford at the moment, I expect the fans wouldnt care if he was lazy, in it for himself and sits down when the balls down the other end because he's got ability.

* more than 5 times, otherwise is Casal

Seriously I still think we have a better team / squad than the last relegation season.  The problem is there isnt a good blend in the squad. too many nice guys not enough dirty bastards.  but we cant get effort confused with aggresion, we dont have enough players who are up for a fight and kicking the fuck out of the opposition.  That dosnt make them more hard working or commited, it just makes them more aggressive - something that most players either are or arnt.

Central midfield has been a particular problem, not one player has impressed there for more than a couple of games in a row under all the managers this season. Obviously the defence was a major issue but the addition of Greer & the comeback of Vincent seems to have sorted that.

Title: Re: Please Start Giving a Shit
Post by: DV on Monday, March 2, 2009, 15:03:38
I think you could be right there, we lack a player with Gurneys attitude and temperment but ideally with a bit more talent....and someone who takes free kicks like the Leeds one every single time without fail...

Title: Re: Please Start Giving a Shit
Post by: Colin Todd on Monday, March 2, 2009, 15:10:10
Lack of pace is something that the 2 sides have in common.

Other than Ifil none of our players are very quick.  Coxy is alright, I dont think macca is actually that fast, Robson Kanu is reasonably quick i suppose.

The 05-06 team was pedestrian as fuck. Iffy realised this to his credit and signed loads of back players as they are fast. ;) obviously this went wrong when we signed trevor benjamin.

lets face it, most footballers would rather win than lose on a Saturday, but our current squad comprises players who either aren't from Swindon, don't like not playing in front of smallish crowds or have been through a lot financially with the club, so most of them don't really give a shit.

That's not their fault, but the fault of our manager/s who have brought them in. Being a successful manager isn't about finding the best players, it's about finding the best players who give a shit. That's why chelsea/arsenal/liverpool are losing to United - love them or loathe them, the United players are all winners, and it stems from the top.

Wilson seems to have more of an idea of the kind of character needed. Greer is committed, passionate. Kanu, maybe good and shit in equal measure, but he's always demanding the ball, he wants to play, to win. A far cry from Macca, who as good as he is goes missing too often.

Timlin, Ifil, Cox, Greer... yeah they might have shit games from time to time, but they want to win, you can tell by the way they act on the pitch. I don't mind seeing Town lose as long as they've tried. Milwall for example, we conceded so late but we'd worked our tits off, so we had no grounds to complain.

If we're lucky, we'll win the games we need to and stay up, we then shift the dead wood and get players in who want to compete next season. Wilson, I'm sure, can identify these players, Malpas couldn't. He wanted numbers in and that's not enough. If we stay up I'm sure we will shift a lot of players...

Either way it's all about games like tomorrow night and not Tranmere away. We'll soon find out who gives a shit about playing for us...

I'm sure you'll get over it, just lean back and think of Peacock.

You'll always get stick Gary cos you take STFC so fucking seriously it's borderline mental. Your MSN, Facebook etc are all saying the same thing as you've said in this thread. I bet you've posted similar threads on every board you post on.

Haven't you got something else to get annoyed about?

Maybe I do take STFC so seriously. There is a very real and personal reason for that. Since I moved back to England from Canada, I had no friends really when I moved back. Not that anyone should give a shit however I met most of my current mates through STFC part from ones through work etc. I went to my first game in 1983 with my Dad and yes missed a few years living in Canada, only catching the occasional game, People who know me know I never got on well with my Mum, I do now, however when I went to football, I could forget all the shit going on at home. So yes I do take STFC very seriously etc. Maybe too seriously at times. I don’t expect sympathy and expect some smart ass remark back saying how I never got on well at home etc. that’s fine but that’s the reason I take it so seriously because it means a lot to me for personal reasons. Now I get on well with my Mum, have great set of mates and see football etc as well. There are people a lot worse off, say with cancer, no money, homeless, lost a friend/family member etc. These players get paid to play football and no they don’t have to have loyalty or whatever but would it really hurt them to play 90 minutes of football and earn their pay?

rubbish but nippy. yes

I thinking its a bit harsh to call Big Kev rubbish.

He came into the side, did well at right back had a piss poor game against Huddersfield. Came back in at left back under Wilson, did alright and has done ok on the right wing.

Now he has a settled position and a run of games I think he will do alright for us. He looked very good at Leicester and thought was our most attacking threat against Hartlepool and should have never gone off.

I was only joking really, he has improved under Wilson.  Trouble is i remember him playing against us for both City & yeovil and thinking he looked quality.  He's not been anywhere near that level for STFC yet.

True but at both those clubs he got a run in the team in the same position. He hasnt quite had that yet.

I hope there is more to come from Big Kev though, although he isnt due another goal for 3 years...

i dont get why any of our players would just coast along.a few of them will end up on the football scrap heap whether they give 100% or not.surely none of them wants to be one of those players?
if it were me i'd be trying to secure my future,be that at stfc or elsewhere.

In fact what I said in response to the statement from the Board that it may be necessary to sell in Jan, was that it meant Cox as he is the only saleable asset.

I don't recall ever saying the Board actively wanted relegation...rather, perhaps if they were serious about avoiding relegation, then we needed some new players.

My thoughts are that we have the basis of a good team. Some of the performances this season have been good, & we haven't been thrashed by any one really. When we've drawn rather than won, or lost rather than drawn it's been by the odd goal.
What really annoys me is when we don't get what we desreve, because of poor decisions by the officials. I may have a complex or I might be biased, but seems to me half the time we are against 12 men. Even the Scunthorpe game the ref gave one of their players a yellow when it was blatant red.
The one thing we are lacking is confidence & swagger. But I am totally convinced that our manager will get us out of the position we find ourselves in.
I can think of 4 teams right away that would rather be where we are in the table, & Nam must be really worried about tomorrow night. I really expect to beat them, particularly if we can get a goal in the first half, but even a draw will leave them 12 points adrift. A win for us will in my opinion as good as see them going down.

Cheltenham are as good as down anyway. When is the cut off for -10 points for entering administration? If it hasnt passed I wouldnt be surprised if they enter it.

If they dont and do go into admin they are proper fucked, from what I understand they'd have -10 for entering admin and because of the current economic climate they wouldnt be able to agree a CVA so would effectivly exit admin without a CVA and get a further -15 points for that.

All rumour at the moment though.

We could do with a couple of lower mid table sides going into admin and getting docked 10 points....

The Board never said they would need to sell in January. I fear they might need to in the close season, but if it's a popular player(s) I guess they could risk a supporter backlash. Season ticket sales are likely to go down before any sales, so it will be interesting to see what happens.

I think you said once or twice that the Board had accepted relegation due to the handling of the Malpas sacking and your suspected subsequent appointment of a cheap option manager.

I think Wilson will have them motivated, hopefully the crowd will not get on their backs and save it for Allen and the ref.

Quote
ANDREW Fitton has warned there may be departures from the County Ground this season after being forced to reassess his bid to make Town a profitable club

Right, that was the basis of Cox likely to go in Jan, because with a transfer window it is the only time for departures this season, and Cox is the only saleable asset ergo Cox to go in January

Of course the article goes on to say a sale will only occur at the right price....we know Uddersfield bid 500K which clearly wasn't enough.

of course Cox could have "gone on loan with a view to a permanent move" to any club at any time during the season in order to get around the legal tape...

Parker nearly signed for us back in the early 90's, all done and dusted but then he went to QPR on the day he was due to sign the contract (IIRC).

I also heard about his 3 match attendance today.  Odd, not sure Cox could and should step up that far, a good season or 2 in the Championship would work better.

And even then was largely misrepresenting what was actually said at the AGM. Relying on the Adver as a definite indicator Cox was going - Reg, I'm shocked at you.
