The current school of thought is that a slightly wider tyre at a slightly lower pressure reduces rolling resistance. In addition, wider rims are the vogue which makes sense if you look at the cross section profile of say a 23mm rim with a 23mm tyre- almost aerofoil profile- less drag.
This makes sense. I was surprised at what a difference a couple of mil makes - even visually. However I think anything more that 25 would just look wrong. |

That's what I tell the wife.....  I am running 23 Gatorskins (top tip, after my earlier much publicised Gatorskin shenanigans getting the bloody things on and off get the folding ones they go on 100 times easier!) having read all the garb about wider tyres will probably buy a pair of 25's to try over the winter as I am going to buy another cheaper pair of wheels for then also! Entered the ballot for Ride London again yesterday, we try again although probably if fails this year may just seek a charity entry after February! |

Do they slip as I was thinking of a pair for these winter wheels I am considering, on that topic any suggestions for a cheap set of half decent wheels, thinking something like Shimano R500's or something! Yes I am on Strava not really to hunt segments just to record what I am doing and to guilt myself into going out if I see mates are going out more than I am! |

Bennett had a nasty off a few days ago hence the slip comment.
I think most Shimano stuff is pretty bullet proof so unless you're a weight weeny they'd be a good buy. I have some Fulcrum racing 3s for summer and would consider a lesser value pair for winter use when my stock Bontragers 's die.
Mavic's also seem to get good reviews. Not sure what your budget is but the Fulcrums get a big thumbs up from me - I think with discounts etc I managed to pay about £335 for mine.

I've got racing 5's at the moment, from a conversation we had during a ride at the weekend I suspect a mate may be about to try and flog me his old 3's as for him to use them on his new Canyon he would have to change the free hub... The 5's seem fairly bomb proof, we had some unplanned strada bianchi over the weekend as the ferry was shut and they seemed to hold up reasonable well, turned a lumpy 40 miler into a lumpy 50 miler with some off road! BOOOO!!! I don't think any different kit would have stopped it. I've found Fulcrum hubs a bit of a monster to service unless you take them in professionally. Third hand info - Mavic hubs are from the 80's and they have bespoke spokes so can be a shitter if bad things happen. |

On Friday afternoon I went to Stadium Plastic (spit) to attend Trek World where Trek were showing their full current bike range (perk of being a part time sales droid at a local bike shop). Lots of lovely bling and proper bike porn but, best of all, I managed to spend half an hour or so engaged in a one on one chinwag with motherfucking Jens Voigt! We had a chat about the current top end road bike range and what would be his choice if he could only have one bike (he chose the Madone over the Domane and Emonda) and let on how he used to take the piss out of Fabian Cancellara for prefering the Domane-"Cancellara is an old fart who needs suspension and I used to tell him!" Fuck knows how but we then got onto Brexit and politics As for pro cycling, he misses the fitness element- being at the peak of his power but otherwise, doesn't miss being in the peleton too much. he is enjoying being in the industry from the other side of the racing scene. I told him he should be pushing ITV4 for a full time gig during the TdF. The man is a legend  |

That's ace about jens. As for wheels, look at hand-builts? Spec the parts you want to a price point, get them built better than a machine could and be able to disassemble if something breaks. |
