The best loan signings we've had have been the young talented up an coming players with something to prove ie.Shay Given,Michael Carrick,Jimmy Davis,James Milner.Back in 85 we took a young left back from Millwall called Nicky Coleman,he had a dynamic effect on our season and we ended up with the old Div 4 Championship. If we sign a dominant leader and centre half, it's got to be an experienced quality player, on a permanent basis.
If Danny Wilson had any thoughts on going back to Hartlepool for someone like Michael Nelson, with their cup run, i can't see them looking to sell.
We've also taken some right old shite as well. Remember that young future superstar we had on loan from Liverpool, Nicky Tanner? Tanner The Spanner. I wonder what happened to him?

Nick Tanner (born 24 May 1965) is a former footballer who played professionally for Bristol Rovers, Liverpool, Norwich City and Swindon Town. He was a defender.
Tanner joined Liverpool from Bristol Rovers F.C. and had a short spell on loan at Norwich City in 1990 where he made six appearances. He returned to Liverpool and played 40 games for the club before retiring through injury in 1994.
Since retiring, Tanner has been a coach and/or scout at a series of non-league clubs.

Danny Wilson in todays Adver refers to wanting experienced players to come in.Looking at Gary Sawyer's stats he's 24 yrs old and played 100 games for Plymouth and Exeter on loan. Seems he's more of a left back, who can play Centre Half.If this is true, then in maybe a Byrne suggestion to Wilson?
As to Nicky Coleman,it would have been great to have signed him,but Millwall were on the rise with George Graham and then John Docherty. He was a South London boy,so you couldn't blame him for wanting to give it a go with Millwall. He was in their promotion team that made it to the old Div 1 (Sheringham,Cascarino,Hurlock etc) I think injury put paid to his career. We signed Kingy about 12 months after wanting Coleman.

Bamber used to fall over in the box and Coleman used to stick the penalty in - game after game. Its a shame injury got him as he was a good un.
