Strange with all the gnashing of teeth with Yates going to Blackpool, but in an almost identical situation where promoted Plymouth lost out to fellow L1 club Bristol Rovers re Josh Grant who was on loan at Plymouth last season.

The reason? He wanted a 3 year deal which Muff didn’t feel was affordable. They are, however, splashing £200,000 on Hardie.

So they have money but didn’t want to spend it dishing out a 3 year deal.

We move on (and 3 draws equal a win).

I would absolutely love it though if another team beginning with 'B' and their marquée striker didn't click; for them to loan said striker back to us, him to fit in and go on a beast of a scoring run (all whilst paying only a 3rd of his wages).

History has a way of repeating itself. Then again, so does a hot chilli with myself. It would be funny as fuck though.

I think the teams that are 'going for it' are revealing themselves early on. Handing out 3 year contracts is risky for any team in League One & Two given that everyone's had 0 income for 4 months, and likely to get very little in the coming two months with no guarantees of any income at all for the rest of the year.

To put a positive spin on this, if nothing else Wellens has shown himself very capable of pushing players careers forward when they were older and potentially stagnating (doyle/grant) or younger with potential but needing a loan to take them up a level in performance/potential (Yates).

This can only help when players are looking to come here in the future or loans are bring discussed.

Absolutely, I wouldnt want us offering 3 year contracts to any player under the current circumstances.

There is not 1 player at the club last season that I would be really upset about leaving.

Grant is the nearest to that but even he is replaceable.

With so many free agents out there, even if we start with an brand new entire 11 players I have faith that Wellens will have players at the club that he knows is capable of making us at least competitive this coming season.

Power will not over stretch the clubs finances just to sign players early doors, he will bide his time and wait and grab a bargain or two closer to the start of the season.

DJ by comparison has a "shots on target %" for Swindon of 50% and a career sot% of 67.6%

Yet he is not considered to even be a striker.

Hallam Hope has a Swindon sot% of 43%!

Even Keshi Anderson gets 42%

There is a selfish strikers instinct in Hope somewhere.  Whether he is good enough, on the limited appearances I'm not sure, but one of his goals for us was exactly what you'd want out of a wide attacker (not winger).  His instinct was to get in the back post position sneaking past his marker (in my memory!).  I certainly remember thinking he'd get a few goals if he liked to do that regularly.  His general play seemed a bit ropey, but that could be settling in to a position and system.  If he is a better player than we got to see, he could replace Yates.  I'd expect Wellens is looking for a couple of others though, especially a Doyle upgrade.

Port Vale on his debut.

His other goal was similar vs Exeter.

Both goals drifting in at the far post behind his marker.

He was always going to be too good for L1.
