Doctors getting pay rises but nurses not. Teachers getting pay rises but not support staff.
All are equal and both have worked so hard. It's disgusting.

And care workers, they have got nothing either. Worked just as hard, arguably more at risk than hospital workers, but they can fuck off apparently.

It's a disgrace. Are care homes not privately owned though?

Thing is schools aren't going to get their budgets upped to fund it so those who are already spinning plates to provide an education for our kids are going to have cut elsewhere...

They are, I have just written and submitted a planning application for a new private care home for one of the biggest providers in the country. As part of this I have had to read lots of government and local guidance and projections regarding need v. provision, long and short is that need is rising at an alarming rate, and will continue to do so, whilst provision is dreadful and almost entirely dependent on the private sector. As with housing Councils are being forced (they were asked previously and the majority failed to do so) to make provision for such need within their local plans (much as they have to identify land for the new houses we need), have to see how it goes but writing and reading has beeen something os an unpleasant eye opener. Long and short

It is well within govt's power to set a minimum wage for carers (and NB many operate by visiting patient's own homes, not all in care homes)

but the government interfering with private sector isn't likely to happen beyond setting a minimum wage

Agree, that's why I suggested a sector-specific minimum wage would be the most likely way to make it happen. Clearly they won't do it, because a) it would cause howls of outrage among the free-market extremes b) they'd have to provide additional funding to local authorities to enable them to pay for it or half the care homes/care providers would go bust.

That's obviously pretty low life behaviour. On the other hand, the story is so devoid of any meaningful detail you wonder what the point was in publishing it at all...

Because it outrages people, some people live to be outraged and outrage sells papers.
