but will probably do enough to keep Town up - Beamish Line notwithstanding

we might already have enough points to stay up.

less so the Beamish line

Let's just remind ourselves that it was Gillingham, defensive kingpins of L2, not Swindon that conceded the late, late goal and threw away 2 points.  We came back.  Heart pumping because because it was at Gillingham and because the prodigal son and the Town fan in goal were key to securing that point for us in time added.

I thought we were sound defensively in the first half and that we  looked the likelier to score up to the equaliser.  But it did really open up and it could have gone both ways.  Agree that the subs have not worked for us but I still give some credit to Gav for rectifying one criticism of him from last time by not playing Austin and Dinan at the same time.

Well though McEachran played, we have never replaced Anthony Grant.  Brewitt added bite and competitiveness in that role and I love his heart but we need brains as well as physicality in a DM.

Gunning:
- Dominated for large spells then they have had their threat. Their 19 reminded Gunning of Suarez
- Two poor goals again

I’ll preface this post by saying - I didn’t watch nor listen to then game so contextually this might be well off but here it is anyway;

We seem to have done a complete 180° post transfer window.
Flynn had to fill the bench with kids & we literally had no options to change things during games.
Now it feels like we have too many options and we keep making subs for subs sake (more on that in a bit) it seems like the last three games we’ve stifled our own play / momentum by making an excessive amount of changes. I can’t comment much on today’s but Glatzel being hooked quite early the last few games has seemed a wrong choice.

However, to me I’d say it’s also clear that we probably save a chunk on paying the loan players wages if they get 25+ minutes a game. For example (and I know it’s early days & I haven’t seen tonight’s game) but I can’t see why other than financial reasons we’d use Drinnan as anything other than an alternative to Austin so we can manage Charlie’s legs better. He, minimal game time has no place as a wide striker in 433 at all.

I can at least get swapping the likes of RHM, Glatzel, McKirdy & Elbouzedi amongst themselves

Still, nice to score in the stoppage time rather than concede

What a fucking finish. Thrilled for him. That was deserved completely. Gillingham didn’t deserve a point let alone all three. Get in Town

I mean it’s entirely possible there are fitness issues and training performances effecting how and when we use our subs…

I knew some would be negative about this and that I will be accused of being a "happy clapper" but as someone who was there I would say that was a superb performance against a team that are in the play offs. We were so much the better team throughout it was devastating to be 2-1 down. FBT and McCarthy were outstanding,Devoy was a great presence in midfield. Glatzel and McGurk lively first half and Drinan and McKirdy as replacements were great. One of the great Town moments when McKirdy scored after a superb cameo. Still not seen us win there but this was one of the best.
2 top quality goals from us.

6th most goals scored in the division
2nd {joint} most goals conceded in the division

The story is old as time for Town for some time but we know what area of the pitch the problems lie; it's not the shaded corner of the Don Rogers stand!

I try & bear in mind that we have the youngest head coach at the elite level & judge him accordingly.

Gunning looks to have the potential to make a very good go at it. Time is on his side but not on ours as fans unfortunately.
Happy to see how this mini season pans out.

I would agree with adje's assessment of the game from what I saw.

I think anyone assessing this game in isolation and without the context of the season would say it was entertaining, that we played well on the ball, caused them problems and can say we may have won on another day.  Problem is, that context and the rest of the season that brought us here is actually quite important.

Really enjoyed that, I thought we were really good, central defensive pairing solid.
We deserved 3 points. Some lovely football, fair play for the turnaround.

Great going forward tonight and some useful lessons for next season. Big takeaway for me is that Russell (or perhaps more accurately Kiely) can spot a player. All of the new recruits look good. Jury slightly out on Elbouzedi for me, but it’s early days. What their model could do with is understanding what a team needs - McCarthy and FBT are a great pair to have at this level. They should focus every effort on getting those two together next year, with a proper central midfield combination in front of them. A boring type, who closes down, blocks passing channels and knows how to shield a defence.
