I was at the game back in 1981, one of just 2,890 of us to watch Swindon beat Sutton 2-1 in the FA cup 2nd round at the CG, we were 1-0 down early on and won with a last minute winner from the underrated Howard Pritchard. We had loads of chances and Sutton really rode their luck.

From the layout you can tell the stadium was also used for something else. Athletics in this case. Wouldn't say no to artificial pitches being allowed in L1 & L2. Potential vital source of income at our level & players have to stay on their feet in the main these days anyway. The technology has moved on greatly since the Oldham, Luton & QPR days. Most modern pitches are not 100% grass now. |

Pretty standard fare for non league teams entering the league pyramid for the first time ever. It has a capacity of around 5,000 and they have a fan base of probably about 3,000. Sutton have a lot of other, much bigger, football clubs/grounds within a 10 mile radius so their stadium is plenty big enough for their current level of fans. Swindon by contrast have never had many clubs close so can draw upon a much bigger fan base who wish to follow league clubs, all our competitors are 30+ miles away. Wimbledon must be about 4 or 5 miles away from Sutton and Wimbledon have historically been a far better supported club who reached the highest level of English football, so there is automatically a competitor "on the doorstep" for fans who want to see a good level of football. Sutton fans are real hardcore fans who have supported their club through some rough times. |

good information..it is really amazing how many soccer clubs there are in a city. I look at the premier league and the number of teams in the London area....the NFL,NBA, etc...would never do that....LA has tried and failed many times. |

The one thing that's fairly unique about the English league system is how far down the pyramid you can go and find teams who are still a) professional and b) reasonably well supported.
For context, the fourth tier in France (Championnat National 2) is regionalised and almost entirely amateur apart from professional reserve sides. Attendances are usually sub 1000 with a few honourable exceptions.

For Godd02 - the USA equivalent is College football - there are a group of very well supported big Colleges who bring in huge crowds, but there are hundreds just below them with <10k rocking up because they are less invested in the team and "fans" have a big College not too far away. I'm off this weekend to watch University of West Georgia with a few thousand others (my daughter goes to the College and invited us). UWG is only 30 miles from Georgia Tech, Georgia State and in the orbit of Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama.
Sutton probably have 20+ clubs at their level or close to it within 20 miles of them.

If you go down to National league level there are 17 clubs within 20 miles and probably another 5 or 6 if you got a few miles further. Arsenal, Brentford, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Tottenham, Watford, West Ham, Fulham, Millwall, QPR, Charlton, Wimbledon, Orient, Crawley, Boreham Wood, Dagenham, Bromley Wycombe, Woking, Barnet, Maidenhead, Wealdstone, Gillingham(ish). Whereas Swindon have Bristol Rovers, Bristol City, Oxford, Reading, Cheltenham and FGR within 40 miles and none of them closer than 28 miles away (FGR). |
