I think they favour the muscular, direct approach. Be interesting to see how we cope with that.

Another away win - 3-1.

Jojo and KKH return to the team and a 0-1 win. I think KKH would have made all the difference against Dale if he had started. Hunt is a solid right back but offers very little going forward and I don’t believe he’s a wingback at all. KKH will be able to help overload their midfield and get more crosses in the box. Hunt on Saturday looked to pass back or sideways rather than try and get a cross in.

Wouldn’t that compromise the possession ‘total Garnerball’ way we play? Or to put it another way, tactically how would you fit the rest of the team around those two playing that for 90 minutes, or, would you use them in an impact way towards the end of the game if we’re losing?

I understand what you are saying because in some games I have thought that we on occasions ought to drive through the opposition defence to try to open up a game. Thus far Garner hasn’t deployed that tactic and I don’t get a war cosy feeling he will.

Unbelievably I am off to this, my first away game in probably 2 years and im ending up in Sutton. Without going all Leeds etc I find it quite hard to take in this fixture without it being an fa cup game.

they are here on merit though and we are through shitness. will be a tough game based on the league table. my away record is quite terrible but lets hope we can continue an unbeaten run

It's OK, to offset that we're going too and we haven't seen us lose away all season, mind you nor has anyone else :) .

Anyway, I'm thinking it;s going to be a draw, which wouldn't be too bad.

Agree I would go with the following team in a 3421 formation
JJ
Odimayo
Conroy
Critchlow
KKK
Reed
Gladwin
Iandolo
Williams
McKirdy
Simpson

I know that means resting Payne, but he would be a great impact option from the bench. I think when Williams and Payne played in the same starting XI they quite often played in the same areas. Gladwin plays deeper where he can dictate play more with his range of passing.

That's fine as long as they don't press us and we don't need to go direct at all. Not sure McKirdy is going to win anything in the air or be able to hold the ball up if we're under pressure at the back and need to go long and need it to stick to bring others into play

Vale fans said they kept the ball on the floor and ran through them and writ 2 up. A couple of dodgy ref decisions and a succession of balls into the box did for them in the end - 4-3.

McKirdy isn't a lone striker IMO. Simpson is the only person at the club that could realistically play that role (hence why he has to date).

Pre match not the best spot to watch the worker ants scurrying about their business from The Willow Walk.

So, a big ticket event tonight. Literally.
An all dayer in London.
A new ground.
The battle for L2 survival going much better than expected.
What's not to like.

One previous meeting with Sutton. A 2nd round FA Cup tie in 1981.
Wasn't part of the sub 3,000 crowd that Tuesday night for the last gasp 2-1 win.
Must have been postponed on the Saturday. Can't remember.
The first round game v Taunton shows as an away game in the record books, but no travelling involved that day, back when giving up home advantage was fairly common.

A physical test tonight.
Simpson should relish it. The back 3 have the attributes to cope and the midfield need to move the ball around quickly.
Evening games seem to have a higher tempo for some reason, which should suit us.
Anyway, no reason why it shouldn't be a glorious victory including a bullet header by Simpson from a pinpoint Iandolo cross.

Sutton United are best remembered for the cup giant killing of Coventry in the late 80's and for Piegate a few years back with the very portly backup keeper filling his face in a televised tie & copping a fine and a ban from the FA for a breach of betting regs.
To finish, the not too difficult quiz question is, who were the 3 future Town stars who were in that vanquished Coventry side?

I was at the game back in 1981, one of just 2,890 of us to watch Swindon beat Sutton 2-1 in the FA cup 2nd round at the CG, we were 1-0 down early on and won with a last minute winner from the underrated Howard Pritchard. We had loads of chances and Sutton really rode their luck.

From the layout you can tell the stadium was also used for something else.
Athletics in this case.

Wouldn't say no to artificial pitches being allowed in L1 & L2.
Potential vital source of income at our level & players have to stay on their feet in the main these days anyway.
The technology has moved on greatly since the Oldham, Luton & QPR days.
Most modern pitches are not 100% grass now.

Pretty standard fare for non league teams entering the league pyramid for the first time ever.

It has a capacity of around 5,000 and they have a fan base of probably about 3,000.

Sutton have a lot of other, much bigger, football clubs/grounds within a 10 mile radius so their stadium is plenty big enough for their current level of fans.

Swindon by contrast have never had many clubs close so can draw upon a much bigger fan base who wish to follow league clubs, all our competitors are 30+ miles away.

Wimbledon must be about 4 or 5 miles away from Sutton and Wimbledon have historically been a far better supported club who reached the highest level of English football, so there is automatically a competitor "on the doorstep" for fans who want to see a good level of football.

Sutton fans are real hardcore fans who have supported their club through some rough times.

good information..it is really amazing how many soccer clubs there are in a city.  I look at the premier league and the number of teams in the London area....the NFL,NBA, etc...would never do that....LA has tried and failed many times.

The one thing that's fairly unique about the English league system is how far down the pyramid you can go and find teams who are still a) professional and b) reasonably well supported.

For context, the fourth tier in France (Championnat National 2) is regionalised and almost entirely amateur apart from professional reserve sides. Attendances are usually sub 1000 with a few honourable exceptions.

For Godd02 - the USA equivalent is College football - there are a group of very well supported big Colleges who bring in huge crowds, but there are hundreds just below them with <10k rocking up because they are less invested in the team and "fans" have a big College not too far away.  I'm off this weekend to watch University of West Georgia with a few thousand others (my daughter goes to the College and invited us).  UWG is only 30 miles from Georgia Tech, Georgia State and in the orbit of Georgia Bulldogs and Alabama.

Sutton probably have 20+ clubs at their level or close to it within 20 miles of them.

If you go down to National league level there are 17 clubs within 20 miles and probably another 5 or 6 if you got a few miles further.

Arsenal, Brentford, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Tottenham, Watford, West Ham, Fulham, Millwall, QPR,
Charlton, Wimbledon, Orient, Crawley, Boreham Wood, Dagenham, Bromley

Wycombe, Woking, Barnet, Maidenhead, Wealdstone, Gillingham(ish).

Whereas Swindon have Bristol Rovers, Bristol City, Oxford, Reading, Cheltenham and FGR within 40 miles and none of them closer than 28 miles away (FGR).

Just amazing of the support...even college football normally doesnt have schools that close that will get massive support like the premier teams...in my home state another university wanted to go Division 1 (highest level) they were told they could if they dropped their football program.  We dont want to split loyalties of the supporters in our small population state

Yes. Before my time I'll hasten to add but a comic genius with demons lost far too soon.

Just noticed that Sutton play in yellow which makes it easier to not fall into the trap of looking at them as cuddly non-leaguers.

I have found ifollow pretty easy.  i generally just goto the club site and get on there through my computer that i hook up to a tv.  i have enjoyed the ability to switch between audio broadcasts.  the home team broadcast generally has a little more crowd noise which can be fun.  I also personally like the wider camera view than what i saw with the sky broadcast.  i like to be able to see the field some.

Surprised KKH and Gladwin are out. Happy to see Grant on the bench.

Baudry . . . to be continued.

Still think we keep going into games with an unbalanced, shapeless midfield.
It feels like Reed as holding. Everyone else, anywhere.

It’s Payne and Williams, two non-combative, wider players, playing centre mid that’s the slight discomfort for me… looking forward to them both bossing it.

Payne has always stated he thinks his best position is central attacking midfield, but then Iandolo thinks his best position is left back. Evidence suggests both are wrong.

More likely to be Payne deeper, more alongside Reed with Williams behind Simpson and McKirdy isn't it?  That or Williams and McKirdy making a 3 with Simpson.

Trade off between prime location behind goal and to the left but no view of corner flag beyond 18yard box.
No worries. Three points and move on.

Williams plays for us because he has an the injury record that would make Darren Anderton blush, but he's certainly several levels below his talent.

True, he was just the player judged to have given it away, it could be anyone TBH.

He hasn't been overly poor so far.

But it will go down as Baudry having given away the penalty, something he has a track record of TBF.

Surely you’ll agree though that Baudry is our weakest centre back?

Yes, but he is also our only centre back that hasn't played many minutes so far this season.  He's playing no worse than Conroy second half on Saturday, and Crichlow at times on Saturday

I think KKH would have a field day against their left back today who looks pretty slow and weak.

McKirdy goal not given.

Again a bizarre bit of reffing, McKirdy not given offside until about ten touches later when he scores. It's almost like they're officiating like VAR is in place?

Get the ball back on the ground and run at them with Williams, McKirdy and Simpson and we'll be laughing. Agree KKH would suit this game although Hunt hasn't done badly.

Play their game and we'll have a much tougher time.

Iandolo and Baudry weak links. Iandolo doesn’t have a clue where he should be positioned when defending and might just have the least amount of end product I’ve seen a full back have for us in recent times. Crap.

Baudry? He’s just fucking Baudry ain’t he- was shot to bits last year and looks the same this year.

Williams and Reed brilliance.

Mckirdy has to score the one that hits post.

Going to be a long old half.

Not sure you can blame Baudry for the pen when we didn't think it was one, and that foul was just a clash of heads. He's not been notably poor so far.

You're wasting your time RF. He is our weekest CH but he's playing and the defence have coped well against the wind and the free kick barrage. The Pen was for Handball i reckon with the defender less than 3 yards away.

Iandolo has done quite well against a quick strong foward  and linked up well going forward just like Saturday.

Williams and Reed top pair. Next goal wins for me.

Deeply uncomfortable, but think that will be a fantastic result looking back. Horrible team to play against and three points on the road. We were brilliant in the first 30 and they only scored from the spot - plenty to be pleased with, even if it wasn't utterly convincing thereafter.

Good result that.  Thought we had them on toast for the first 30 minutes - not in terms of domination but in terms of looking a real threat everytime we attacked with pace and on the floor or moved them about.  Second half we got a little frenetic after feeling the pressure from their long balls and knowing they had the beating of us in the air.  Fortunately, we still carried a threat and McKirdy could, maybe should, have had a hat trick.  In the end they didn't really create much but that is the way of their style - it's scrappy and sometimes it falls differently.  I'd imagine they have done well because of it - teams get worried even if it isn't effective and before you know it a second ball has dropped to onw of their players and in it goes.  Today we didn't get any unlucky bounces really and the players can't be faulted for effort.

Agree on Baudry - he had one blooper that could have cost us second half, but he did what he needed to do, by and large.  I think he struggles now with teams that move it about on the ground, pull defenders around.  This, oddly, is a team set up for him - nothing to think about, no quick runs to worry about.  Defend, keep position.

Didn't look pretty defensively but it worked, they didn't really have any chances second half for all the long balls, Hunt was my MOTM, was brilliant tonight. When we got on the ball they couldn't get near us, especially for the first 30 minutes. Another good result.

Great win. Astute management from Garner in my opinion. Right subs at the right time ,Sutton for all their possession, created one chance from a free kick.Thought Payne who had an average first half played a captains role in the second. Only real criticism ,McKirdy's finishing but to be fair he's getting in good positions

Garner:
- A lot of young players deserve credit
- JoJo had gone away and 2 caps for his country. Didnt feel comfortable putting him back after 1 day back in training.
- Have 2 wonderful goalkeepers. Gives manager a headache
- Conroy swollen ankle so rested him
- Rotation with Glawin
- Gladwin and East gave us a bit more control when they came on
- Have a load that we work to with Gladwin each week. Not going to change what is right for the player
- Run of form in general has been good
- Pleased, but could have had more points
- Is it still about survival? Yes. Putting foundations in place. Will keep pushing

Agree with this - Baudry can play this sort of game much better than a more mobile, less direct attack. Sorry to hear the Twitter kneejerk crowd lambasting him on the radio. I made him my MoM in the end.

Great result. proper shit hole with a very weird ground in the middle of a park. not enough terracing available for the fans available. took them half hour to open up a unoccupied area.

home fans were something else. their own stewards were getting embarrassed. plenty of homophobic and just generally weird chants. at one point half their stand joined in.with a your dad's a nonce chant! was like a youth club

thankfully the team turned up really good hard working win with so many moments of attacking quality and grit. I was worried for the first 10 mins after the 2nd half and that was pretty much it.

Well happy with that, got to admit would have settled for a point pre kick off, we've finally got that winning habit back,  just got to do it at home now, great results from most clubs around us, Vegans and Gardengate both dropping points.
Certainly wouldn't have expected us to go from a club with only five registered first team players and on the verge of folding to a club challenging for promotion in just three months.
Full marks to Clem, looks like this time we may finally have an owner who is going to do exactly what he said !!.

First away game this season for me. Nice not to have to drive home after a midweek game.
That was a really good win and performance. They are a difficult team to play against - physical and rely on set pieces and second balls from punts forward - thankfully we don’t have to watch that style. The wind was tricky tonight (behind us second half which  made their high balls, quite tricky to defend at times, and explains why we overhit some balls.
We should have been 4-0 up after about half an hour rather than 2. We then had a shaky spell for 10-15 mins either side of half time, after which I thought we saw the game out pretty well.
Good performances through the team - Hunt, Baudry particularly stood out at the back, Iandolo is improving on the left, Reed was excellent again, and Williams’ goal was outstanding.
I was not in a good place to see, but I was surprised McKirdy  was flagged offside for his disallowed goal. I thought 5he penalty was the correct decision, but overall the ref was poor - inconsistent decisions (generally in favour of the home team), the challenge on Reed was shocking (could have been a red) and on two occasions Sutton players raised their hands to push over Swindon players (McKirdy and Williams) with impunity.
Garner got the subs spot on - East slotted in well for Reed and Gladwin likewise for Williams.
A Sutton fan told me we are the best team they have played this season.
A well deserved 3 points. Hopefully 3 more on Saturday.

If we hadn’t won tonight it would have been a great injustice. I was in the home end and I definitely wasn’t the only town fan there! McKirdy looks class and has been unlucky with a few. Could have had a hat trick today. Didn’t see what his goal was disallowed for and didn’t see the hand ball. Good game management by us and everyone came out with credit. Said hello to
Mildy as he came out of the tunnel at half time from the home end. We are a clinical striker away from a great team at this level and that is not an insult to Simpson. I think Simpson is doing a great job but it’s a lot of pressure for an untested 19 year old. We need someone to share the burden.

Two stunning goals and a decent away following midweek.
Unnecessary to give away the penalty, ref didn’t spot it but our lino to our left had his flag up almost immediately.

Would have settled for a point and that made up for Saturday.
Just have to find this missing home form.

We do play some absolutely top quality football at times,
Reed without doubt our best capture this season and we really need to be getting some gentlemen’s agreements in place to keep this nucleus.

Title: Re: Sutton v Swindon pre match chat and matchday
Post by: Batch on Wednesday, October 20, 2021, 07:57:57
fantastic result.

thought in the first half Simpson was outstanding, probably only overshadowed by Williams

Thought baudry recomposed himself as the second half went on.

I think they only had, what, two shots on target?

if McKirdy was a bit more clinical/lucky then the score line would have been more reflective on how we played imo.

Sutton are no mugs, but I thought we dealt with their physically quite well.

Absolutely nothing to complain about yesterday at all.

Sutton fans after were very complimentary after the game. Acknowledged we probably should've scored 4 or 5. They didn't have many chances, a header at JoJo towards the end and the penno. Ref gave them absolutely everything so it was tough to keep a rhythm going after a superb opening 35 minutes. It's a tough place to come though, Sutton were full of energy and very lively. They didn't create much but they were constantly pumping balls forward. A big test passed. Williams is different class, absolutely ran the show first half.

Shoutout to Baudry who took a lot of shit during the game but I thought had a really positive second half. Also the Sutton goalie who enjoyed the banter from the away fans.

Quote
Swindon were zipping the ball around and moving much quicker than us in that first half.

Hats off to Swindon, some class players and thought they might run us ragged in the first half.

We did get back into the game in the second half but very much hoof ball... Wide players not in the game today. Kizzi and Ajiboye had excellent chances to pull us level. We will lose some games.

Kept battling tonight although beaten by a stronger and more "professional" team. 2 unstoppable goals. They should go up and maybe we needed this a bit. Probably the best team I've seen us play this season but we weren't far behind.

tonight we were beaten by a decent side who scored two quality goals.

Tough evening..
Outplayed for lengthy periods but we showed so much guts and fight to hang in there.

I think we were beaten by the better side on the night, they came out of the blocks very fast, we didn't really know what hit us and were 2-o down before we got any sort of a toe hold in the match.

I thought Swindon were the best side we have seen at the Lane for quite a long time, so credit to them..

Through gritted teeth - well played Swindon. I’ll have to avoid my neighbour for a few months

Typically Jonny Williams never managed anything like that goal last night when he was at Palace. 😅 A little surprised to see he has dropped down to League Two anyway.

The key reason we didn’t get back into the match was the sheer physicality of Swindon- quicker to the second ball and they wrestled/muscled ( fairly in the main) when we were in possession to get the ball back or to stop us
maintaining procession and do anything meaningful.

I have no doubt that Swindon will be automatic promotion candidates so no disgrace. We need to pick ourselves up and make sure we get something from the next game. Don’t forget we never lost two consecutive league matches last season..

Honestly, no complaints about the score last night. Over the 90 I thought Swindon were the far better side, especially in the first half where it could have easily been a cricket score if they had a bit more luck and we didn't have Bouzanis.

We have never faced anything of this quality at GGL since Arsenal.

He didn't get off the bench last night, he was very highly rated at Creepy Crawley though and got a big money move to Notts County off the back of it. Always looked decent against us.

Personally I thought Ajiboye looked terrible, realyl fast and can dribble but with some of THE worst crosses I have ever seen in professional football, he had a fairly easy game up against Iandolo though who doesnt enjoy a tackle.

Iandolo is really frustrating in an attacking sense (for me at least) at the moment. His ability to trap and control an incoming hard pass is second to none; he makes intelligent runs with and without the ball and he takes up good positions but his final pass or cross is invariably lacking. I am sure that during our last L2 visit - thus wasn't the case. Maybe I just remember that season through Wellens tinted glasses

Interesting to see the comparison with the 2019/20 season - my recollection of that is our good run began with an unconvincing mid week 1-0 home win against Stevenage with Doyle scoring in added time - around this time of the year I think.
So we are not only doing better than we hoped at the start of AUgust, but better than when expectations were higher 2 years ago.  Let’s get behind the team and manager.

Last night I was in the home stand - tunnel side - not far from the place where our supporters were moved to (near the scoreboard). Some of our non playing personnel were sat just in front of us. From there I could see the penalty and the other handball a few mins earlier very clearly - both decisions were right in my view.
Their supporters’ views on their forum - thanks to PV for posting those - are pretty accurate. How their manager thinks a draw would have been a reflection of play I don’t know. Apart from the late free header and the penalty, the only other chance was I when their winger got in behind one on one and Woolacott did really well to stand er than going down too early - a better save than it looked.

That was the point I was trying to make - he might have been in the building by the end of August, but didn't really kick on into "that" Doyle until around this time of the season

He'd scored 8 in his 11 games with us after our 13th game that season, pretty strong numbers albeit 6 of those came in only 3 games.

Surprised that McKirdy's offside goal wasn't included in the highlights package - Had to go and watch the whole game again to find it and see that he was offside (based upon a pretty poor camera angle).
