Yes....Connell is a year older, and has scored half the League goals of Paynter....makes sense to me.
9 of Paynter's 29 goals in 09/10 were penalties. Takes the gloss of the total.

Did Eastoe not get 31 goals one season 74-75?,We missed out on promotion by 3 points.Someone will doubtless correct me if I am wrong. As for Constable not good enough. If we want to take a bit of a gamble Styche at FGR wouldn't be a bad shout. If not then Clarke on loan is a pretty good call.

I wasn't convinced that the stats would in fact be all that damning of Alan Connell and although I love your posts Reg, I prefer negative posts about new players to be fair, so nerdishly I looked up the stats. Except for last season, Connells' seasons were in the Football League. Although you could say 48 goals for League clubs by Connell is roughly half of BPs 83, Connell's strike rate for League clubs IS superior. Billy may have been a sh*t buy (wages - wise at least) after his best season stepping up a league but let's hope Alan Connell isn't, even if he is unlikely to match last season's return (unless we bring back Peacs to feed him!) Connell 187 (104) 73 but take out best season (conference with Grimsby):- 141 (104) 48 Paynter 262 ( 73) 83 but take out best season (play offs with Danny):- 217 ( 68) 54 League Club Strike rate for all matches is in fact better ignoring substitute appearances and even giving equal weight with full appearances to substitute appearances of say 215 minutes average, Connell's strike rate is about the same.

Whatever happened to the young lad we got from the North East at the beginning of last season - a big fucker striker. Can't remember his name but he came from a slightly lower standard than Charlie.

Think his name was Campbell, and he went to Darlington following trials with us, and Orient.Apparently Wilson didn't /couldn't make his mind up on him.

No, we turned him down. this was a 18/19 year old beanpole we had high hopes for but I haven't heard anything about him for ages so presumably he's gone. Was never given a squad number.

Yep...Eastoe 26 in the League and 5 in FA Cup. As regards Paynter having about twice the amount of league goals as Connell, RedRag, why would you want to take Paynter's best season out of the equation. Fact is Paynter was a decent player for us, good Div 3 striker, score a few and set up a few for a strike partner. Probably not good enough for the Championship....but not our problem. We've got plenty of our own to worry about.

Jon Campbell is at Darlington. Seems to be doing alright there.

You're not wrong - Paynter is just the kind of target man we could do with now and would probably bring scrapping and ball winning amd knock down qualities we desperately need right now. I also accept the greater weight of Billy's league goals is worth pointing out. I took out Paynter's best season because it was uncharacteristic and because "league" goals ruled out Connell's comparable best season. Even counting Billy's best season and excluding Connell's best (non-league season) season there is no discernible difference in their strike rates. TBF to AC though, even if he lacks Billy's battling qualities he may score some spectacular and crucial goals even when our overall play does not merit them - and this Sunday would do me fine if we can't be murdering them on all fronts.

Hasn't Connell been used as a winger a lot too? Not going to help the goals-games ratio!

I don't get why people are excited by the prospect of signing Constable. A grafter he may be but he definitely can't hold a ball up to bring players in other players.
Constable sounds like a last resort and i think by then we'd have scraped the barrel if we try and buy him. I'd rather we used Kerrouche to hold the ball up than sign Constable
