Good point. Why do we need a DoF then? I think I poorly worded my point, someone who will sign players for football reasons moreover business reasons.
Ah, OK. As I understand it, the alleged rationale for us needing a DoF is that the current board members have demonstrated this season they need someone more footballistic ((c) Arsene Wenger) who can act as a conduit between them and the manager. Partly to advise on player recruitment and partly to advise when the manager's just going through a sticky patch versus needs sacking. Kind of a Conduit of Doom.

Not that convinced that merits a full-on DoF, but they perhaps need some better advice anyway

Alan Shearer in the Observer, today:

"If the right one was to come along then, yeah, I would look at it. I'm not desperate to go in at a club that's got nothing and where I'm peeing against the wind. I'm not naive enough to say I'm not going in unless I can be a Premier League manager, I'm not that stupid. Somewhere along the line you've got to do your apprenticeship. But I'd want half a chance of being successful at it.

"You get faced with a different task every day as a problem is thrown at you. Someone's late – how do you deal with it, do you upset him or do you upset the group? You try to instil some discipline. Someone asks for permission to go somewhere [London, usually]. It's all the little things. What do you decide to wear on the match day? When do you decide to go to the hotels? You're asked different questions every day and I loved it. It was great."

"I don't want it to come across [in this interview] that I want to skip all the apprenticeships and go straight in at the glory end."

Is Steve Tilson still at Lincoln? Because now they have gone down i've got a feeling it could be him.

Their chairman's been very vocal about slashing budgets (e.g. they've just axed their reserve team) by around half a million. Which may have an impact

I think we could do a lot worse than Steve Tilson.

Horses for courses and all that.

For me, Tilson and Keane are both horrible prospects.

I'm unconvinced about a Director of Football position being created. It's only going to take up more of our salary budget and for what? Wray seems like he's trying to focus on the football more than Fitton anyway but time will tell.

i'm convinced that i don't want a dof.if we get a good enough manager we won't need one

Gary Neville.

I think he'll make a great manager,but I think he's doing Sky for a few years first

He's very Marmite, but when you hear the bloke talk he's suprisingly articulate for a footballler/manc

I'd agree too. His abrasiveness disguises a pretty intelligent bloke
