So, Mystery Candidate, Burley, Di Canio, Rix, Magilton, Trollope, Taylor, The 2 scottish lads and someone employed.

Now I was never any good at Maths, but I'm pretty sure that isn't 8.

I’d take back the poison dwarf, Dennis Wise for another assault at league two failing that throw a few quid at the Italian midget Di Matteo .
How about Roberto Di Mataeo? (SP)
I'd love to think that someone like Di Matteo would consider it, but not after managing top flight so recently.
Can't be Di Matteo then, unless Wray's not been reading TEF assiduously. Which, clearly, is inconceivable

To be honest Ralphy no matter who it is will piss somebody off mate. We could have a choice of Morinho,Ferguson,Wenger,Ancelotti, and Mancini and someone will still kick off we picked the wrong manager.

I love this part of football it's what being a fan is about.

Dean Saunders from Wrexham..................you heard it here first! Obviously no truth in that but I fancied getting my own random name in. Either that or Stuart Pearce has decided that now's the time to take over as he can't be arsed to give up his summer and go to Denmark for the under 21 european championships.

Or a glorious  return for the new houdini of the football league.......Juliano Grazioli!

I tell you what Ian Culverhouse isn't a bad suggestion at all.  Cultured player, town connections, experience at this level and a good record as yuuuuf and cone gathererererererrrrrrr level.

If you were looking at a manager who ticked all the boxes he fits the bill and while he doesn’t come with the glamour of Paolo Di Canio although he has a good few years experience and unlike Burley and co he arrives without having been on the old manager merry go round.

Reginald, is Culverhouse your man?

This is quite a strange one. If this person were to not be offered the job, then why mention it? Therefore I think one of the unnamed is to be employed by us and we can put down our weapons over the current candidates. It's making me think we're going to get someone we didn't see coming and it's going to knock our socks off. This is exciting.

I'm an optimist. Socks not being knocked off doesn't hurt, I just dust myself off and convince myself I'm happy anyway. Which I will be. :D

FFS! There's always some little niggle people have to come up with for any decent candidate for manager isn't there? OK, so he's a bit dead and we'd need to reconstitute his physical presence from ashes scattered across the Seven Seas, but isn't the spirit of Barry White, Walrus of Love, enough? Would not that alone drive our players on? Surely when it comes to the "passion" everyone's so damn keen on, Barry was the King of Passion? OK, so he might be a bit dead, and relatively untested in lower league English football, certainly in his post-corporeal phase, but we've always done well under rookies (except when we haven't) and at least he's not a kiddy-fiddler or Scottish.

I thought Buckle may have been the 'already in a job' candidate who applied until I realised today that Torquay were in the play offs.

I can't believe he would have been applying for another job and being interviewed for it instead of preparing his team for a play off semi-final.

Even if he had, and it was him who the board had interviewed, they would not be saying they would be announcing the new manager on Wednesday when Torquay have a semi-final second leg to play on Friday followed of course by a possible (now looking highly likely) appointment at Wembley.

I was actually getting quite excited at the prospect of having Buckle as our next manager but as soon as I realised they were in the play offs, for the reasons given above it became apparent that there was no way that was going to happen.

Whilst I tend to agree you have to also remember his contract is up in 6 months. I'm assuming that despite his exploits with them this season he's yet to be offered a new one. Now I know i'd be looking if I didn't have long left in my current job. He may also be thinking he has taken them as far as he can espeically if players like Benyon are going to be sold off cheap. For him it might make sense to move to a bigger club where he can progress his career more. Staying at Torquay might damage his rep if they go up but come straight back down wherea getting us up and then taking us to the top end of L1 would see his rep rise more.

Don't think anyone disagrees with that, nor that he is likely to leave. It's just unlikely he'd have been applying for jobs and that we'd announce his appointment on Wednesday whilst they're still in the playoffs. Much as I'd like it to be Buckle, I think we'd have delayed the process if he was in the running.

For him it might make sense to move to a bigger club where he can progress his career more. Staying at Torquay might damage his rep if they go up but come straight back down wherea getting us up and then taking us to the top end of L1 would see his rep rise more.

I'm afraid the fact that they've said they would be announcing the new manager next Wednesday just blows the Buckle theory apart for me. Shame, would have been good I think.

Hasn't Peter Reid publicly stated several times that he wants to stay with Plymouth to get them back up? Ordinarily, I'd take the standard protestations of loyalty in football as utterly worthless (as they usually are), but in his case, his extraordinary actions this season (selling his FA cup medal to help pay staff wages, paying their leccy bill out of his own pocket etc) do give his words weight.

He wouldn't be the first though would he to be honest. Our very own Hoddle did it.

Sure but that was different - Hoddle was offered the Chelsea job on a plate, there wasn't any interview process to go through. If we wanted Buckle it would have been a few private phone calls and then no announcement till after the playoffs.

You'd hope so, but there may be sticking points we don't know about e.g. (and these are just random examples off the top of my head) his salary demands might be too high; he might want what the board regard as an unrealistic transfer budget; the rumours about Hoddle on the board are true and Burley sought assurances that couldn't be given about no DOF-style inteference; he turned up to the interview in his "Friends of Stalin" T-shirt

I doubt it. If you're an experienced manager like Burley and you apply for a job with Swindon Town you've reached the point of desperation and all demands and expectations are out the window. Besides which, we've got to have one of the top 5 highest budgets in the lowest two divisions, so I'm sure we pay a decent wage to our managers.

I’m not quite sure what type of manager I want us to have in League Two. I certainly want us to compete for promotion. There have been plenty of successful rookies at L2 level to take their teams up.

2004/05:
1st: Yeovil Town (Gary Johnson: had been in the YTFC job 4 years when promoted)
2nd: Scuthorpe United (Brian Laws: had been in the SCFC job 7 years when promoted)
3rd: Swansea City (Kenny Jackett: Experienced coach yet still a relatively rookie manager)
P-O: Southend United (Steve Tilson: Appointed in 2003 as a rookie)

2005/06:
1st:  Carlisle United (Paul Simpson:  2nd job, still new to management)
2nd: Northampton Town (Colin Calderwood: Appointed as a rookie)
3rd: Leyton Orient (Martin Ling: Appointed as a rookie)
P-O: Cheltenham Town (John Ward: Experienced)

2006/07
1st: Richard Money (Experienced)
2nd: Hartlepool United (Danny Wilson: Experienced)
3rd: Swindon Town (Paul Sturrock: Experienced/Dennis Wise helped build the squad)
P-O: Bristol Rovers (Paul Trollope: Appointed as a rookie)

2007/08
1st: Franchise: (Paul Ince: Relative rookie)
2nd: Peterborough United (Darren Ferguson: Rookie)
3rd: Hereford United (Graham Turner: Over a decade as manager of Hereford)
P-O:  Stockport County (Jim Gannon: Relatively new to management)

2008/09:
1st: Brentford (Andy Scott: Rookie)
2nd: Exeter City (Paul Tisdale: Rookie)
3rd: Wycombe Wanderers (Peter Taylor: Experienced)
P-O:  Gillingham  (Mark Stimson: No Football League experience as manager prior to GFC)

2009/10:
1st: Notts County (Multiple managers)
2nd: Bournemouth (Eddie Howe: Appointed as a rookie)
3rd: Rochdale (Keith Hill: Appointed as a rookie)
P-O: Dagenham & Redbridge (John Still: Experience, had been with D&R 5 years or so)

2010/11:
1st: Chesterfield (John Sheridan: Decent experience)
2nd: Bury (Experienced Alan Knill did the work, rookie Richie Barker finished)
3rd: Wycombe Wanderers (Gary Waddock: Decent but relatively limited experience)

A nice piece of analysis, although I'm not sure what it shows....other than no Italian has got a side out of Div 4.

About this promotion talk....in all the excitement of new boss talk, we've kind of lost sight of just how poor we ended up this season. Whoever it is, they've a massive job over the summer, getting rid of the unsuitable players and bringing in better replacements.  This wont be easy.

The first aim for the new man, should be to at least make us a bit competitive in games, by introducing some basic competence in key positions.

There's a lot who seem to think that last season's underperformers, will somehow be magicked into a promotion squad....not sure it happens like that.

I'm unconvinced about a Director of Football position being created. It's only going to take up more of our salary budget and for what? Wray seems like he's trying to focus on the football more than Fitton anyway but time will tell.

I put that up to show what kind of manager takes team up.

It doesn't matter if you're English, Italian or Uzbek - a rookie manager is still a rookie manager. I would rank Di Canio as a 'Paul Ince' type of appointment. Big name, little experience, has coaching badges.

You could say that there isn't a "George Burley" in that list. A manager who enjoy relatively high profile success who is slowly falling down the leagues.

For the record, I'm not suggesting that promotion will be given for Swindon. Although, I would say that it isn't unrealistic to state that I wouldn't mind a high table finish if possible!

Ah, OK. As I understand it, the alleged rationale for us needing a DoF is that the current board members have demonstrated this season they need someone more footballistic ((c) Arsene Wenger) who can act as a conduit between them and the manager. Partly to advise on player recruitment and partly to advise when the manager's just going through a sticky patch versus needs sacking. Kind of a Conduit of Doom.

Not that convinced that merits a full-on DoF, but they perhaps need some better advice anyway

Alan Shearer in the Observer, today:

"If the right one was to come along then, yeah, I would look at it. I'm not desperate to go in at a club that's got nothing and where I'm peeing against the wind. I'm not naive enough to say I'm not going in unless I can be a Premier League manager, I'm not that stupid. Somewhere along the line you've got to do your apprenticeship. But I'd want half a chance of being successful at it.

"You get faced with a different task every day as a problem is thrown at you. Someone's late – how do you deal with it, do you upset him or do you upset the group? You try to instil some discipline. Someone asks for permission to go somewhere [London, usually]. It's all the little things. What do you decide to wear on the match day? When do you decide to go to the hotels? You're asked different questions every day and I loved it. It was great."

"I don't want it to come across [in this interview] that I want to skip all the apprenticeships and go straight in at the glory end."
