Further proof I could sleep through the apocalypse by not knowing there was a storm until reading everyone's Facebook posts this morning.

Was pretty neat watching it on the north ramp at work.
Completely lit up the sky, literally from dark to light.

Fair play...proper good old Swindon Working Mens Clubs, are a historical treasure not likely to last much longer.  When the Gorse Hill Club shut, and was turned into an Islamic Centre, a little bit of me died.

Oh dear Reg. As much as I admire your reminiscences, your knowledge, your sentimentalism, your enthusiasm for all things Wiltshire. Your ability to connect with the traditions of the local community, your recognition of Swindon as having a traditional working-class base and maybe stubborn refusal to accept anything to the contrary: Well, I think, inadvertently you've just placed yourself within the BNP/UKIP school of thought. It doesn't bother me. But be honest Reg. (PS. I,m not a Tory).

Now, that's just what gets my blood boiling. Reg is bemoaning yet another little piece of local tradition disappearing from Swindon and is branded, at best, a little Englander and, a worst, a racist.

My son is a director of the Mechanics Institute Trust, probably the most iconic Swindon building, and before they managed to secure funding for its redevelopment ( Google it and see what the plans are) they had so many applications from companies wanting to turn it into yet another pub or whatnot.

Fuck me, Swindon is bland enough without another Witherspoons.

The problem is so few people give a toss about anything deemed to be local, or heaven forbid, national tradition they don't notice, or care, when their towns and cities end up being a hotchpotch of nothingness

There wasn't really a need to say it turned into an Islamic centre though, which is probably what spawned those comments.

Much as me and Reg have disgreements over many things (although by no means all), one thing you cannot address at Reg's door is anything even remotely racist/UKIP/BNP etc.

why not. It has been turned into an Islamic centre.

No different to saying the old cinema at the top of town is now a pub.

I think Regs comment could be read one of 2 ways depending on your views, i think hammer has made it into a racist comment. I read it that a part of Reg died when the club was closed, the islamic part was more for fact/information. I never read the comment as racist. But i can also see how hammer has made it into a racist issue.
It is the difference that someone who has only posted 299 times not knowing how Reg posts compared to the rest of us who have posted for years knowing what Reg is like.

what the fuck is wrong with people.

the slightest little thing and they bring out the racist card.

and what pisses me right off is the probability that privately they are just as worried about the ever increasing numbers coming into the country, but in public they go all fucking liberal.

That is what has made sensible debate on this issue nigh on impossible
