I think a lot depends on you want to do and the level of income required to support that.
All being well I am hoping to downsize the house and use the proceeds to travel whilst my pensions hopefully provide enough income to live.
Final salary scheme Jan? Well done fella
Been contributory for last 5 years but still good value for money. Does act as a bit of a ball and chain round the foot when tempted elsewhere, as package wise it's worth quite a bit per year.

I was in a decent final salary scheme for 10+ years until I was made redundant beginning of last year, gutted about losing that. Not currently in a pension scheme so need to sort that out sooner rather than later.
I left Nationwides final salary scheme when I opted for redundancy 7 years ago. Massive shame but it was a family/life choice which worked out well (so far). Edit :I agree with the ball and chain, it was a massive factor in thinking about staying but why stay in a job for a pension when happiness can lie elsewhere

Most of you have forgotten the working class peoples party (Labour, new or old makes no difference) withdrew tax relief from pension funds to the tune of £5 billion annually every year thus reducing the value of the annual credits (don't get confused with tax relief on paye contibutions) to your fund, the net result is that you had to pay in more for longer to get the same......
The culprit, a certain Gordon Brown who sold massive chunks of our gold reserves at the bottom of the market and told the markets he was going to do it, thus depressing the final price even further.
Prudence my arse.

Made most of my money on the stock market and still invest now. Silent partner in two small businesses too. Couldn't do it and live in England though, cost of living is too high. There's probably plenty on here with more to their name.

I never intend to retire as I never intend to work for a living. My current job stresses me out enough already and consumes enough of my time

I'm aiming to retire at fifty. Trying to hammer the mortgage and have it paid by 2020, then that gives me 4 years to build a pot up to retire with.
