I suspect Royal Mail will be gone fairly swiftly....if the Tories can win their first by-election for 25 years, then there's really no hope. You'll be gone by 2017.

Whoever gets in, we're fucked. Labour were the first to really bring forth the idea of privatising us. The company is too big to change as much as people are expecting it to in the time frame they've given us, the old guard of the workforce are too set in their ways, and it is not at all helped (locally) by the racial tensions currently simmering away at the mail center. Fun times ahead at Royal Mail.

I'd say your retirement age was probably a tad optimistic

approximately 10447 working days left until i retire. I genuinely hope not many of them are at Royal Mail...

There you go Leggett, Smeeton has spoken you're fucking doomed. A nice start to your week end.....I'd start thinking about your exit plan right now.

In the mean time to help the bombshell Smeeton has dropped on you he is going to up his posting via royal mail and reduce his emails, insist that all his online purchases are made by Royal Mail irrespective of cost. Instruct all his pension fund providors to not sell any of their shares in RM at any time and at any price until you have secured alternative employment.

The conservatives winning a by election will have nothing to do with you being kicked out of your job by 2017 (Smeetons words not mine), that will be down to friendly or hostile take over bids and the management of RM.

Some bloke was talking to himself as he walked past me saying "I'm gonna smack him one " and starts shaking his fist. Just passed him again chatting to a shop worker and he said "it was him, that bloke did it up the street" pointing at me  Huh?

I kept walking  Smiley

Worth noting that privatisation and the mess the RM finds itself in was largely due to this which is why both Labour and the Tories supported a very unpopular policy.

Spot on Si. Would be interesting to hear the age people think they'll retire as I think some are in for a bit of a shock.

Partial retirement is the key Sam. Think I'll still be working reduced hours into my 60's, and am fine with that, final salary scheme should help out here, 15 years in going strong.

Plan to retire at 60 ( less than 7 years ) but try and do a bit of consultancy here and there. It won't be a retirement of jetting off everywhere but I should have enough to keep the wolf from the door but would have to cut back on some things. Even better if I was made redundant at 58.

I think a lot depends on you want to do and the level of income required to support that.

All being well I am hoping to downsize the house and use the proceeds to travel whilst my pensions hopefully provide enough income to live.

Final salary scheme Jan? Well done fella

I was in a decent final salary scheme for 10+ years until I was made redundant beginning of last year, gutted about losing that. Not currently in a pension scheme so need to sort that out sooner rather than later.
