The piece that burst was about three inches long. So I shut off the water, popped off to B&Q and get some pipe and the nut bits, sawed the pipe to the required size, popped the other stuff on, screwed in place and turned the water on. To be honest we were all a bit surprised that it worked.
beats having to call the fire brigade, Have a pipe burst in the house last year, had to call the fire dept as i didint know where my stop cock was, a year has past and i still havent been able to locate it. :-p

Good work Donkey. I did exactly the same last year when I put a nail through an upstairs pipe (or pipes as it turned out) Its a great sense of achievement. FYI - B&Q usually do a burst pipe kit which slides over the pipe (as long as its a 15mm pipe) with a nut and olive at each end. Saves buying new pipe and joining bits (thats a technical term )

Mine is out the front of my house in the little hole where my water meter is. It isn't even technically on my property. Look there.

Both houses I've owned have had the stop cock in the kitchen, on an outside wall.

Look under the downstairs sink as that is where the main water feed into the house is normally put.
