Watching the ISS go overhead for the 2nd time this evening just a few minutes ago - just over 1½ hrs after watching it the first time. To think that it's completed an orbit of the planet since the first time I saw it at about 9.20pm is simply awesome (in the true sense of the word). http://www.isstracker.com/ |

I watched it a couple of years ago, saw several shooting stars as well, amazing from london, where you wouldnt think you could see anything.

It's the size of a football pitch, roughly 250 miles up...which actually makes it the most visible object in the sky after the sun and moon (and planes etc., obviously). I'm actually getting quite attached to it. Sounds daft, but I look up when it's going to be passing most evenings and stand out at the front of the house to give the fellas up there a wave.

Just to be pedantic, they aren't meteorites until landing on the ground which is relatively rare, most debris burns up.....until then they're meteors. August is a good month for meteors. |
