... Jack Reacher in the books is a 6ft plus black man, yet Hollywood midget Tom Cruise was cast. I don't remember there being an awful hoo ha about that.
Hollywood, like the rest of society appears to be getting awfully precious.
In my household there was a lot of hoo ha about Tom Cruise being Reacher. Each book started with a page detailing Reacher's military experience and history, along with the fact that he's 6'5" and around 250lbs. Ignoring the height difference, I'm not even sure Tom Cruise could get to 250lbs if he was wearing a lead diving suit :-) As big fans of the books, it was hard to come to terms with the casting, although the films weren't that bad in the end. Alan Ritchson (sp?) plays Reacher in the The Amazon Prime series and he is a lot closer to what we all expected.

I still think every representation of Sherlock Holmes should look like Basil Rathbone.

You cast whoever you think is going to bring your character to life in the best fashion, so if that means an accent change, so be it. There would be some very odd WW2 films by the Western Countries film industries for example - I can't imagine the volume of German speaking actors willing to be portrayed as bad guys is sufficient to have sustained the 50's/60's churning out of those films for example.
Indeed, but if your character is American but the actor playing them cannot do a convincing American accent I am not sure any casting director can claim that they are bringing the character to life in the best fashion. As for the latter point, I think sadly that Allo Allo have rather spoiled that issue

But you are viewing through a UK lens - the main audience will not notice the difference quite so much.

This was interesting and from experience you'll be surprised at my answer. When I've been sent calls for certain roles, where there might be a few lines of dialogue. Let's say it says the call is for an American Army Sergeant...when responding to the Casting Agent, I always ask...'Do you want me to do an <<ins accent>> in the self tape?' The answer most times tends to be 'no, just your normal voice is fine'. See, as a viewer you might be looking for how someone sounds {which is obviously important and we don't want someone sounding like Sean Bean to be unable to speak like someone from the buttery deep South of the USA} but often CDs or their Assistants are looking for how you look, move, what you do with your eyes, basically several nuances that many of us won't even notice when watching a programme. Further to that, have you ever wondered why you feel fairly ''comfortable'' when watching a movie/series/film? Often it's because the actor{s} has/have ''normalised'' their portrayal/performance, we are at ease and aren't thinking about 'oh my god his eyes are rolling all over the place'' or ''she keeps looking beyond him when talking to him''. Like, we're not distracted by things we shouldn't be. This is more the emphasis on bringing a character to life to some degree. Yes, an accent is important but it I would say it won't always be the first thing they are looking for; plus that can come later with vocal coaching if needed

US tropical storm. It's pretty unusual. Found this claim to be somewhat incredible
Palm Springs
"Gov Newsom said the town had received more rain in a single hour than in the whole of its history."

There seems to be some confusion in the reporting of this, its unclear whether the guy was referring to the most rainfall in an hour ever or total ever, I suspect its the former but who knows. Bloody elites are getting everywhere with this.

The best pun of this year’s fringe was:
"I started dating a zookeeper, but it turned out he was a cheetah."
Is that really the best they could do? That?

The format of the poll means those best joke things are all one liners, and there aren't that many comedians whose trade that is really - certainly if Tim Vine and Milton Jones aren't bothering!
