Remember watching that as little lad & Alf Garnett.
Pleased to say that I managed to survive & become a reasonably well rounded individual & not in the slightest bit traumatised or in need of trigger point warnings regarding written & televised matter.

That's becasue you are from a generation that is capable of doing that, the present generation isn't on the whole.

It always makes me laugh that some of these things get cancelled (in a lot of cases (not all) rightly so) but things that are popular with the current generation don't.

Example in case (and I am a fan so don't want it cancelled) Back to the future - racist language and rape of a girl, but because it's popular doesn't get mentioned.

I get that it's not on the same level as some of these 70's sitcoms, but the way the cancel culture world has exploded, i wouldn't be surprised eventually.

Some things should rightfully be binned and wiped from History, but not all..  there is a line, i just think the line is in a different place depending on what generation you are from.

Absolutely. Would like to think that those whose formative years were in the 70's have moved with the times, at least the majority.

History is important in terms of looking back & not repeating mistakes. It should never be censored to fit with the times though.

The time to cancel is when the intent related to something like racism - i.e. the intent was to compound the issue of the time and make people feel less valued, or others more superior.  Even then, I'm against censorship in terms of legal bans, but happy to accept mainstream vehicles for viewing should be within their rights not to publish.

There are plenty of examples of bad things in films that are there because they either reflect the views of people of the time, they reflect the reality of that time.  No point having a film that is trying to be serious about the Royal Family in 1600's Britain that includes loads of non-white English people in Court and the Peasantry - because there were very few at that time.

On the flip side, I get quite irritated by people who clamour to get angry about something being produced today as being Woke, like the Little Mermaid remake.  Unless I missed something, the original was a cartoon and Mermaids are not real.  They could put a fucking day glow yellow person in the lead role if they wanted.  The world is made up of a variety of people, why shouldn't films made in a world where travel is pretty ubiquitous and emigration/immigration commonplace be allowed to represent that spread?

I like the feel good happy ending of Back To The Future where George McFly hires the guy that sexually assaulted his wife.

the whole ending is weird if you think about it.

No only did they name their son Marty, after someone the mum had a massive crush on (making oedipus blush).

Not only that, but neither of them question the fact that that Marty looks exactly the same as their own son does.

Depends where it is set, if it is in London or port towns there were a fair few African people around even in the 15th century.

Not sure its down to generations, possibly education or integration with other cultures I honestly don't know.

As an example my missus used to work for the CAB and they had a missive come down from the Trustees above (all 50+) that they were not to put up Christmas decs as it could offend those of other religions. This caused pretty much universal hilarity from her non Christian colleagues and clients who frankly a) didn't give a toss and b) liked Christmas purely as it gave them a week off work!

For each younger person who is apparently offended by something there is a similarly offended older person invariably spouting off about young people being snowflakes who would not have survived in their day. If one was cynical one could note that we have a government and media that likes to stoke culture wars and generations against each other.

On a similar vein I ended up watching the Mario Bros movie yesterday as the small person wanted to see it. Not really my cup of tea (but she loved it!) but in thinking about it, why are they called Mario Bros when its Mario and Luigi, shouldn't the company be called whatever their surname is 'Bros?

The oft repeated episodes of Fawlty Towers still include the Major referring to the West Indies and Pakistan cricket teams in racist terms.

100%...history should never be airbrushed or erased...

But so much of it is airbrushed anyway to fit certain narratives - and I'm not talking about the modern era of cancel culture, I'm talking about how pretty much all of us in the UK are taught to view certain events (let's use WWII as a common example) or certain individuals.

In the case of WWII, the national ''victors'' of said war are oft painted as the ''good guys'' and we've been taught as such via several forms of medium; add to it that pretty much every military personnel associated with the UK and US are ''heroes'', whereas other nations they get indicted as ''terrorists'' or ''enemies''. Indeed this is not a dig at any military personnel funded by government/taxpayer but by those who have glamourised the view of our nation's roles in such horrific historical events. The lesser of two evils in terms of world leaders in an era - no doubt but to also paint our leaders of the time as some kind of saint or saviour of humanity is just as bad as the propaganda that was spouted elsewhere.

If we take Winston Churchill as a common example of a bestowed individual in UK History, there are many occasions where this ''great briton'' was regularly flawed and inept. The Tonypandy Riots (1910 - Ordered troops to stop Miners striking), Gallipoli Disaster (1915 - c150k troops killed when they weren't even ready or prepared for battle), Bengal Famine (1943 - Millions died when he had the power to step in and help) and the Bombing of Dresden (1945 - thousands of civilians died) barely even make it into any primary or secondary education curriculum - maybe one sentence in a textbook if that; let alone the millions of soldiers that died during WWII under his watch.

Maybe they did prevent humanity from going down a different route but I bet it has still only been mostly beneficial to the rich white man. The slave loving and warmongering Churchill certainly was no saint and I'm unsure why he still appears in the Top 5 ''Greatest Britons'' - maybe it's due to how history has and does continue to be painted of him, which skews the real view of who he really was; they should've maybe locked him in a room with the board game ''RISK'', such that it was he had a ''hero complex'' but really he was an absolute cunt...just not as cunty as Hitler.

Aye, particularly where conflict was involved then history tends to be written by the winners & glossed over, forgotten or rewritten at a later date by the losers.
