@bob
bosses who think you just slack off if they can't see you.. cunts!
I mean, I just do as I'm told really Batch, and I know it's different for everyone but you get less out of me by being in the office. By the time I get into the building, I've had the stress of travelling and having to weave in and out of phone zombies and I'm there and logged into work for 2 hours less than I would be at home as well as being more distracted for idle chit chat/distracted by loud telephone calls in the background in the office etc. My bosses are so hands off it's brilliant. The big cheese hates the fact she has to monitor staff being in the office etc, she's sensible enough to know we're all adults and trusts things to get done, whether at home or not. Part of me thinks the powers that be in Canary Wharf are pushing for tenants to get their employers into work to squeeze money out of them. I take a packed lunch and refuse in general to spend any money in the Wharf, (petty I am!) although we have a monthly dept lunch out and I paid £16 for a distinctly average burger and chips at a place called Patty&Bun which I had to pay through gritted teeth.

As a boss, this one irritates me as well. If I am stupid enough to employ someone who actually does nothing, more fool me. However, if I employ someone who delivers everything I need from them and it takes them an hour, well done them. The relationship should always be defined by output - an employee costs money, in return the employer gets production of something. That relationship should be defined so both parties know the expectation. So long as they employee delivers what does it matter if they are in an office or on the toilet all day? I always had a sort of admiration, while understanding the data security issues of the case, for the chap who managed to offshore himself. He got paid for two years or more after contracting some chap in China to do his work for him every day. Oddly, I think he got caught reading a cat forum!

I think you are right, penny farthing shagger Reese-Mogg was really going for 'back in the office' to civil servants. The government must be missing a fair wedge of petrol tax/train ticket vat!
definitely easier to concentrate at home in busy periods.
@rob
absolutely right, output to get the job done well matters.
the guy who sub contracted was so ballsy! Think it's my favourite work story.
others I know personally include:
- the grad at a week known local communications split off (ok Lucent) who went ape shit bonkers on his first business trip with the company Amex - champagne limo transfers, top good, hotel upgrades .. spent a fair while paying that back. Probably why they are all essentially personal cards now
- the guys who worked for a company that tendered out specialist cable manufacturing, low volume but expensive.
started their own company, undercut the tender and did it themself. Only got busted when some mail went to the wrong address and they starting digging around to find the manufacturers
don't think the guy I knew got sacked. probably a Tory by now

Bit of a delicate situation.
Went to Athens a couple of weeks ago with friends. We paid the entire booking for 2 rooms and our friends gave us the money for their room.
We’ve now been charged €450 on our credit card by the hotel for damage to the room our friends stayed in. The shower door was damaged apparently. They did mention to the receptionist when they left that it was damaged and thought no more about it.
They insist they didn’t do it and are unwilling to pay.

That's a tricky one for you and could make the friendship a little frosty if you end up paying for the damage. If they never caused the damage in hindsight they should have reported it straight away and taken a photograph as proof.

The damaged shower. Although if I found a fault in my room I wouldn't take a photo of it, I'd either phone down or go to the reception and report it there and then.

Oh I get that, but taking a photo just shows damage, it doesn't prove that you were not responsible and that it was there when you arrived.
